My cousing uses AOL. I haven't been able to send e-mail to him for a long while already (they blacklisted us); now I guess he can't write me, either!
I'm really glad that e-mail is such a great way to keep in touch with everyone! Even the ones I won't miss;-) Seriously, though, it's like we're going backwards in time, when you couldn't just send e-mail to one address to reach somoene. If I want to contact him, I have to log into Yahoo, use that account...
Hey, now we know how many signatures there are at the beginning of the slashdotting! Now, if someone will dupe the story in 3-4 days, we can see how many signatures got added:-D
On the other hand, we could let corportations tell citizens what to think, turning them into mindless herds, to be milked for all the money they can be...
For many of these applications, it seems like having a Linux server at one point with a client that runs X applications off of it (using Wireless) would be an entirely reasonable way to go. (Wonder how little a "thin" laptop without a harddrive could weigh...)
For the business traveller, well, having both a desktop and a laptop next to each other on the desk is really awesome:-D If you use IMAP for your mail and VPN to in-house servers for Calender/CRM/etc services, then you're doing fine... As long as you have a network!
Without a network, I can see it being a bit trickier...but I use the laptop to keep track of all that stuff, and the desktop for computation/coding, etc. That way I could just carry the laptop around and still have all the info I need.
100 posts in, and you still haven't given the obvious answer to this!
What does he have on Bill? Well, when the head of MS starts desperately following bizarre orders from Evangelicals, you realize he's gotta be looking for allies. My guess is, his contract is expiring soon, and he's looking for a loophole.
Now, we know Satan's contracts are even tighter than MS's, so Bill's trying to get some extra-judicial help. That's all.
Any process that lets one reproduce BitKeeper's process. That includes things like protocol, data format, etc.
If I reverse-engineered BitKeeper and wrote a client, I would expect my client to be able to seamlessly interact with any other BitKeeper client. Sans license, of course;-)
Ye Gods! Wasn't the story gawd-awful enough by the 4th book that you'd have any idea what you're asking? I for one, wouldn't want to see Arthur flying naked up in the air, no matter how pretty the woman is.
This is a very valid point! If you go to the NSA, they give you lots of forms to fill out, and put guys on your tail who wear black suits and sunglasses and never smile. If you go to the RIAA, they give you lots of cash, and you can hire models who wear black bikinis and sunglasses, and smile at you all the time!
Note I didn't even get to any of those lesser distributions with funny names...
Even better, those are the names of the distributions - some have funny names for their versions, too!
So, yes, people make fun of Linux names.

No, we have to wait until Micr^H^H^H^Hthe dev team puts out a bunch of patches for it ;-)
OTOH, if I want better performance *now*, I could hack on the code myself. Wait a sec, if I want better performance, I shouldn't touch the code...

Getting people to switch to FireFox is a Holy War, of course!

No, he sounds like the kind of person who washes his hands 10 times after going to the bathroom.
--LWM
Well, I'm told GNU is like a Virus, and FireFox is open source, so I can think of a great way *I'd* like to spread it!
Of course, they may have trouble posting the pictures on spreadfirefox!

Does that make him yahoo.com!my.cousin@aol.com?

Thanks. I like puns, but that's not going to be enough for me to get my fix.

Yeah, Ram prices will be going down, sure...
But if I don't want to buy ram from Price Fixers, and I don't want to buy untested ram, what the heck am I supposed to do?
--LWM
and if you can figure out what the h*ll it's done, then you're ahead of the game! If you can undo it, then you'll be ...a god.

Wow. I'm redundant because I replied to the article instead of replying to the "frist post"??? Nice :)
;-)
Now I'm off topic, too

err...give him back his karma :-P
(yeah, yeah, I know the Preview button is there - you can give him some of my karma for not previewing)
Give him back his parent ;-)

Add to this that most small memory purchasers aren't repeat buyers, and it becomes a real problem...

Ok, dumb question, probably. What's with the space in the word "license"?

Seattle, California, it's all the same thing when you're trying to read slashdot at the same time as branching code in SourceSafe (ugh). :-D
--LWM
I believe she's in California. Doesn't California have some law about click-through agreements not being enforcable?
We need more cases like that one, too.
