Parent has a valid point, setting up and administering your OSS solution will take more work. However, you can tailor it better to your needs.
I worked at Major Software Company in the Bay Area (tm), and their LDAP/Kerberos/Jabber/SMTP infrastructure worked very well, but of course, there were armies of admins to make things run smoothly. It was not without hiccups - but most if not all of the hiccups were minor (failed hard drives, etc.) and remedied within 20 minutes.
My vote is for LDAP. You can do so much with it - authenticating users on your web apps is a cinch, directory lookups are easy, it integrates with every piece of mail client software, and it's free. Just my $.02.
I think the point of the article is that attendees of the SES Conference were invited to the Google Dance. I was there as a Googler - and it was alot of fun. Honestly, I don't see why this is newsworthy, everyone was there to have a good time.
I don't know who the "Open Source Interns" are, but I'd highly recommend an internship at Google.
Perks include:
Free food that's delicious (and extra free, the 10 pounds you'll gain after being here for a month)
A really freaking amazing workstation. Seriously. Going back to the workstations at school is going to suck
All sorts of intern activities, ice cream socials, etc.
Work on something meaningful! Interns here at Google aren't around to make copies and edit MS word documents. We write code, and LOTS of it. (Engineering interns at least, I can't speak for the MBAs and such)
...as I write this from my desk. Back to work we go!:-)
The "corporate loophole", where these government-created artificial persons have rights, but not liabilities, is the greatest threat to our rights today.
You speak almost as if you believe that corporations don't pay taxes, or can't be sued. It's people like you that make me lose more respect for the left wing, or whatever wacko faction you're representing.
This is the fundamental purpose of robots.txt, which Google respects.
I'm just waiting for Google to release Suegle.

They've learned when to swallow their pride, and spit in the face of bad press.
Conversely, I installed Adobe Reader the other day and ended up with a Yahoo! Like! Toolbar! In! Adobe! Reader!
Now that it's hit slashdot, almost certainly.

You're being too hard on the requirements. I interned at Google, and my degree is in mathematics.
That sounds vaguely like a porno I saw once. Interesting.
I like the "Corbis" watermark on your picture of the body. It adds so much legitimacy to your case as a whistleblower.
i agree - laz.... ah fuck it.
We had to complete the trifecta - three articles about Google Talk within 24 hours.
Your sig is brilliant. I'd like to discuss a licensing agreement.
The first person who figures out how to stab people in the face over standard TCP/IP is going to be rich and famous.
Why doesn't slashdot.org just redirect to the Google PR department?
Honestly, it's getting a little tiring.
I don't use microsoft at home or at work. the last time I used windows was when I fixed my fiance's laptop. MacOSX at home, Linux at work. Bada bing.
podcasts, dude - come on. ride the wave.

Perks include:
Google is obligated to follow the laws of any country in which it does business. Just thought I'd throw that out there.
Cue Slashdot armchair attorneys.

Does anyone realize that running a CPU at 100% takes more electricity than running a CPU at 10%?
"wasted compute cycles" aren't free. I would assert they're not even "wasted".
you forgot google.mil ;)
In Communist China, henious laws....write....you?
And what if the NSA wants an ID on the Pentium 3, can they force Intel to have it, while also forcing Intel to keep quiet about it?
No, this would take an act of Congress. The National Security Agency has no legislative power.
hope this helps.
