I had my wife try out an application I was working on, saying I needed someone who had never seen it before to test it. After 4 boring dialog boxes and 2 error messages it suddenly showed a big flashy screen, and my proposal came screaming from the speakers. Lots of tears then too:]
Again: Good luck Rob and have lots of kids. They are quite a bit noisier than computers but a helluva lot more fun to make and have:>
Linux Window managers could learn from Desqview's sophisticated cut and paste proceedures.
Oh yeah... that clipboard thing was great. I remember using it to convert simple application-bound databases (e.g. Fidomail-tossers, for those who remember that time:-). Open both programs in a DV window, go to first record in first program, create a macro that creates a record in second program, and subsequently copies and pastes each field across DV sessions.
This may seem cumbersome, but it was a hell of a lot faster/easier then figuring out the proprietory fileformats and writing a C program to do it. For some it may even be a tip for simple one-time only conversions for more recent software.
I'm a customer of Redhat, and I just copied my DNA last year, without giving away the source. So, if the customerbase is GPL'd I just violated copyright. But no way in hell am I going to give up my first-born:-)
Wow... I'm surprised that people are still posting replies to the article. Maybe they don't read the comments first:-)
Anyway, option 7 needs a bit of tinkering. (name of celestial body) might be "Sun", and while that would be a damn good alternative for some people I could think of...
And how exactly would shadowing help against over-the-shoulder-lookers? Oh wait, I get it, you create a shadow over the keyboard so it can't be seen.... Better pray that there is no IR filter on that security camera.
as c't is (imho ofcourse) a much respected magazine, and normally I would call it a trustworthy source. I would certainly not expect them to publish such a damaging article without giving the authors of Smoothwall a chance to comment on the findings.
No. Google Groups does not archive any binary content.
So maybe binaries where not archived in the early days either, or maybe there were no binaries yet, i can't remember. Anyway, nowadays binaries account for most of the enormous amounts of data pushed over the usenet. So filtering that out makes the data a bit more usable.
Easy. They will just post a message on the site asking for someone who might have it on cdrom. That's happened before, you know:-)
Wasn't it Linus who said something like "real man don't use backups, they post their stuff on a public ftp server and let the rest of the world make copies"?
You are right. A bit of info for moderators: troll, flame-bait and flame .
It's really a shame that "troll" has become something completely different here on/. In a nitpicking mode I ought to metamod as unfair about 99% of the troll-moderations. However since the mod's are obviously intended to mod comments down that really ought to be modded down, using the troll label is generally accepted.
It was quite usefull in Niven/Pournelle's "Footfall"...

Let me guess: they are auctioning off a "w"?
Possible winner. Maybe he already has kids ...
Instead of which of the two names that you mention? :-)
