I had the opposite reaction to X. I've been playing the FF series since the first one (with my favorite being VI) and I actually stopped liking FF when it came out... I couldn't stand the game.
So from the opposite side of the spectrum, if it follows the format of X, I'm out.
*shrug*
If it's more like IX, or VI, or perhaps even VII or VIII, count me in, I'll even consider buying a PS2.
Besides, aren't we talking about broadband, as in Home service? Are competing with other coutries ability to download off of Kazaa or look at porn really really fast?
Funny the UN [freerepublic.com] (It's a copy of a World Tribune article) doesn't seem to think he lied about WMDs, they think they were dismantled and moved (the sites in those pretty satellite photos I do believe)
The briefing contained satellite photographs that demonstrated the speed with which Saddam dismantled his missile and WMD sites before and during the war. Council members were shown photographs of a ballistic missile site outside Baghdad in May 2003, and then saw a satellite image of the same location in February 2004, in which facilities had disappeared.
Yeah, the Afgan part is real interesting to me because I have a friend over there now setting internet connections for small villages and the like... This is his second "tour" so to speak too...
Not rebuilding? Yeah right.... Too much good news in Afgan, let's look for something more sensational.
Bigotry of middle management? You seem to have had a couple bad jobs and have written off the industry.
I've found nearly the opposite. Management is willing to pay, and pay well, for good people. Despite cries of recession, myself and all the people I know have retained jobs. (Actually I've successfully found new ones as well as turning down other offers) Those that I knew of that lost jobs were bad employees in the first place.
Don't lose faith in the industry or even management though, there's good ones out there. Very good. I've had some REMARKABLE ones, the kind you'd follow to the ends of the world if they asked.
Personally over the years as a worker-bee, trainer, and I guess what you might call lower management, I've found that Programmers and technical people can be some of the most amazing people you meet, socially awkward people you meet, or the bitchiest people you meet.
Listen sometime, heck watch office space... "They don't pay me enough, man I could take this whole place down" etc. Angst angst angst, you can't run a team with someone like that, they're too busy being angry that they didn't get their's.
From the looks of your posts, you got burned.. And the only reason I'm going off topic is to say, man, I'm concerned. Get back to enjoying doing what you do, instead of being angry that that fake whack industry back in 98 that rewarded any kook who dropped the right words is gone and over and we're no longer the kings of the world. It happens.
That's the most myopic explanation of the source of terrorism I've ever seen.
"I get mad about being left out, thus, others who are out of the system and mad must be mad because they are left out."
Guess what, it's a religious and cultural war. Nick Berg and all that, they made him state that he was a Jew, why make a big deal about that? In a more recent hostage crisis they killed all non-muslims and released the muslims. IIRC sometime after Faluja some americans were captured, they kept taunting and asking religious questions (about Christianity in particular). So unless you're willing to switch to their way of life to be inclusive then all the inclusion in the world is not going to stop terrorism. (Please note I'm not saying that muslim == terrorist, )
Gosh I wish it was that easy "Hey guys, we're sorry we've been not been including you. Come and play."
"really? Ah gosh USA you're the best."
That would be great.
But.
Terrorists don't want part of our system, they want to destroy us and our system.
That's awfully nearsighted. True, without consumers, companies don't exist. And with out companies consumers don't exist.
But as I stated in another post, I've never met anyone who wants to start a company to simply make jobs... It reminds me of this soviet-bloc(I think it was still comunist then, it might have been post). People would "go to jobs" every day. In truth the Economy was so terrible that there were no jobs, but to keep from looking lazy people would ride the train somewhere and just do something. In the story that I heard it was these old men who'd come into this school and just bang on pipes. They were plumbing apparently. You can't just give people jobs if there's no need. Right now I'm a student worker (left my career to continue school). It's government subsidized. They company pays probably $3 and hour, the rest is government. I have NOTHING to do. I bored out of my skull. they don't need me. But I'm cheap and hey just in case... So I sit, do homework, whatever. It's the most terrible feeling in the working world.
I'm getting off point here, basically companies (should) exist to do what they love while addressing a need. Money allows them to continue doing so. If the need wains, then they may have to cut expenses to continue doing what they do.
If you find yourself working for a bottom line only company, heck yes, screw big business, and start your own. Gotta love a country that lets you give the finger to the man and do what they do but better and with some passion.
I agree, the love of money is the root of all evil. I guess I should make a distinction. My viewpoint is not that companies should exist for the bottom line although some do. Companies come from either servicing a need in society or from someone who is passionate about their given trade. Usually both. Usually it starts small addressing the needs, but as the demand increases the original team may not be able to support it... They create jobs and hire more people. When the need/demand subsides if they were to keep all those people as a service to society it is very likely that *everyone* will lose their job as the company goes under. Thus it is better for society to sack the the few than have every lose their job because you wouldn't.
I have never once me a person who started a business to create jobs.
Now if we are talking about a VP who knowingly cuts 20 jobs and expects everyone to pick up the slack by working nights and weekends only so his paycheck looks nicer that's seriously whack, and I'm not so sure those companies stick around. Somewhere somebody has to be passionate about what they do (besides just making lots and lots of money), else the company has no vision.
The best VPs I've worked under were visionaries who cared about people as well as getting to the destination.
But now I degress...

Why isn't this right? I mean, I see your point in that it sucks for all involved, but lately I keep getting the general vibe that people think companies exist to provide jobs, when really jobs are investments needed to make money. Heck, jobs are a cost center. If the work being done isn't getting done with your investments you get rid of the investments that aren't returning. That's business, and heck that's life.
Hey we're all about switching from Windows to Linux right? For $180 XP doesn't do what I want it to do, Linux does it all, for free. Will we say that this massive job loss is bad if/when the Linux desktop revolution happens and Microsoft has to layoff a bunch of workers on the OS side?
I got enough chips in my head, don't need `em in my feet... The Goveroiuasopdjfoa, dang it, the Governmopiajeopidfjadf, crap... I may tell you about it later when the Goverlka;sdjfoiad isn't messing with me...
Nothing at all like it... Went there once and never went back. An odd place it is... I mean, you have that to some degree everywhere, Portland, ME's usually has at least one or two homeless outside, and Indianapolis does too... But Dallas was more like a small city.
Agreed. You should see employer's faces when I tell them that I'm pursuing a Bachelor's of Fine Arts while preparing for my MS in CS.
They love it.
Why shouldn't they? You just told them you understand more of their business process than "just a programmer" does. Add in business and management skills and a bit of experience, and it just gets sweeter.
Why shouldn't we be broadening our base? research has shown that those who are naturally gifted in math tend to think with both sides of their brain and be left handed (which tends to signify that they tend to the right brain - look at % of students in art school that are left handed... nutty). Critical thought books talk about how the best thought is the thought that is both logical and intuitive (Art of Thinking for instance).
What I'm saying is it's sick how art school is better at teaching creative/critical thought than science schools are. Esp in any engineering degree. It's like they're anti-right brain. No value to intuition. Just logic. My art teachers so far encourage you to balance the two, and usually away from what you're more comfortable with. They want you strong on both sides so you can go deeper and don't get "stuck". Heck, the Visual Communication program encourages Calc. as an elective. When's the last time you saw a CS Dept say "Take sculpture, or Color and Design Theory, it'll help you in your intuitive skills"?
Anyway, I think we should study Visual Communication, Music, Philosiphy, Religion. Anything that can get us thinking intutively along with our logical thought. I think it will benefit our terribly myopic profession as a whole.
Increasingly albums are written as albums. Thus you can reduce a fantastic album down to a series of songs. (Daft Punk, Ester Drang, Chemical Brothers, and oh so man are this way)
On the other hand, I do like shuffle from time to time when I want to listen music that I've heard alot. Breaks down expectations and renews play lists... that part, very nice.

Hey there serious fellow, I never said I was analyzing anything. I was making a joke. Competitive advantage, broadband, FPS...
Do you understand humor?
Besides, did, or did not the article talk about effects of broadband being HD Soap Operas and DVD Sharing?
Not exactly Economic endevours for those at home, perhaps for those pushing the content (with the execption of DVDs).
meh,
never mind.
Besides, aren't we talking about broadband, as in Home service? Are competing with other coutries ability to download off of Kazaa or look at porn really really fast?
Wait, when did countries start playing Counter Strike against each other?
"Haha, the Great Satan is such a HPB."
Wow.
More bandwidth doesn't ALWAYS give a competitive advantage (unless you can withstand getting slashdotted and you competitor can't. =P )...
Pong: Snoop Dogg Edition
Dig Dugg 2: The Electric boogaloo
