Microsoft never has made an anti-virus product, or stand-alone firewall software so it's hardly making money from "treating" the disease.

Uh huh. And how much money are Symantec, MacAfee, et al making from this sordid business? And how much of it is Microsoft seeing, in terms of 'developer licenses', 'consulting fees', and just plain old cash under the table?

And Microsoft's new ad campaign is strongly recommending that everyone run a virus scanner. Basically free advertising for their buddies at Symantec and MacAfee.

Yeah, so this sounds a bit paranoid, but the amount of money involved, is it really that far-fetched?

JBoss has had a hard time getting Sun certification as J2EE compliant, but now that it has been certified, OS X Server 10.3 + JBoss + Apple's Server Tools should make the XServe rather attractive to J2EE shops.

Here is a complete hardware solution, for less than the cost of a Weblogic licence!

  9. What about OS X? on Viruses and Market Dominance - Myth or Fact? · · Score: 4, Insightful

I don't like the way he keeps mentioning OS X in the same breath as Linux, but neglects to point out the differences.

OS X was designed from the beginning as a desktop OS, and the designers have taken these issues into account. For one thing, the root account is disabled. It is not trivial to enable the root account, and it isn't even necessary.

Secondly, even though OS X ships with a standard mail client it's a good mail client. It can't run applications or scripts with a single click, HTML email is limited to display, no JavaScript can run, and plug-ins don't work.

I wonder if Apple should thank Microsoft for setting such a bad example!

I worked with one terrific recruiter in New Hampshire. He placed me in a start-up in Boston. The job looked great, but almost everyone involved burned out and quit, and the company founder was a lunatic. (I saw him once modify code directly on the production server.)

I didn't last that much longer, and quit. When I called the headhunter he was terribly apologetic; he'd checked the place out personally, and thought it was a good place to work.

So he got me my next job, which was a great position, and for 10K a year more than I was looking for.

For crying out loud, moderators grab a clue. This isn't insightful, it's ignorant. There's no way in hell that virus writers would 'flock to OS X and start writing viruses with reckless abondon.'

OS X has a UNIX Kernel and security model, and as such is much more robust and resilient that any Windows operating system. Applications can not be run without permissions being set, untrusted scripts or applications can not run as root, and random applications can't grab system-wide resources (like the WSH and Outlook) and start sending out emails. Further, the 'buffer overflow' exploit that is the root of many of these Windows problems isn't possible on OS X due to the CPU architecture.

The company, with $6 billion in annual revenue, isn't part of Vivendi's entertainment assets that are slated to be merged with General Electric Co.'s ( GE) NBC.
