  1. China? Censorship? on With Olympics Over, China Re-Censors Internet · · Score: 1

I would like it that way too, if my alternative was to be picked by the police and never heard from again.

  2. Meanwhile, Zenn in Canada on Chinese Automaker Unveils First Electric Car · · Score: 1

  3. Script Kiddies on A Linux-Based "Breath Test" For Porn On PCs · · Score: 1

I do not know about you, but the world would be better off without script kiddies around. Those I would term are the dumb ones.

  4. 2 cents... on Online Community For a Call Center? · · Score: 1

Anyone that is working at home, and is a productivity risk, is wasting time elsewhere anyways.

If you loose anything in AHT, it should provide enough of a balance to cost ratio to enhance training. If there is a training budget (big if), that is where it should be allocated.

  5. Malware? on EA Hit By Class-Action Suit Over Spore DRM · · Score: 1

I do not know about you, but DRM is the main reason I do not purchase video games for my computer anymore.

I would term this malware, as the software, you are not told about at the time of purchase, hinders your usage of other software on the computer (aka. spore). It is still malware, if they tell you about it, after it is installed. The software was designed to stop your usage of other software on your system.

It is kinda sad, when pirated software has less viruses and malware than software honestly purchased.

  6. Total Geniuses on Bad Signs For Blu-ray · · Score: 4, Funny

If the concept of $10-20 movie for DVD (Players for $40) vs $40-50 movie in Blu-Ray (players for $300-400) is puzzling corporations, on why Blu-Ray is not selling...

    I really cannot help them.

  7. Technology is Not the Solution on Judge Rules Man Cannot Be Forced To Decrypt HD · · Score: 1

I realize some people have great faith in their technology to find the solution here, one will find the traditionalist will get the answer a lot faster than the technologist. Torture has and always will be a great solution to finding stuff out without doing a whole lot of work.

Water Boarding vs Prison, most people would take prison.

  8. Salesmanship on Who is Winning the Web Talent War · · Score: 1

The recruiters are over selling the company during hiring, and google keeps falling short of what the recruiters are promising.

The second issue, is the business people have grown their institution to the point, where they feel the IT works are meat, and largely not relevant to the company. So they decide cutbacks are necessary to bring in more business people so the higher up business people can sit and hob nob instead. This of course is referring to middle management, I know the top level management do not last very long in public corps, if all they do is look pretty.

IMHO, based on similar situations in other bloated corps I have worked in.

  9. Volunteer on Practical Experience As a Beginning Programmer? · · Score: 2, Informative

Basically either find an open source initiative and volunteer your time. Get involved in open source, or sit down with a print out of the linux kernel and read it until it all makes sense. Then contribute.

I do not know how many CSC PHD's that just read the linux kernel, and are amoung the smartest people I have met out there.

  10. Huh!!! on Microsoft Blasts IBM Over XML Standards · · Score: 1

What bothers me is that enough people thought this was important to hit the front page!!

  11. Take the Money on Choosing Your Next Programming Job — Perl Or .NET? · · Score: 1

Based on the percentages given, I would assume you are making 30k, and one job is offering 36k and the other is offering 50k.

Take the 50k, there is a very little that will make the difference between the standard of living on 36k vs 50k.

if it was like 70-80k... I would take the good place to work.

Gee - no chance that one of the largest and smartest pattern-searching, data-mining, quicky-quicky-lightening-fast-search technology operations on the planet might be asked to provide some expertise or operational help to one of the agencies that needs exactly that kind of horsepower to help keep people from being killed?

It did not stop Bush going to IRAQ.

  14. Meanwhile on Hiring (Superstar) Programmers · · Score: 1

I am just tired of having the Job Offers that how about working for us for 3 months at no cost as a volunteer, and maybe we will hire you at the end.

I really have had this offer way too many times to count from Tech Companies. People wonder why the good ones have moved to E-Commerce and internet retail. Making 40K a year is not that complicated if you know what you are doing and are willing to actually do the work for it. You then have no boss, and no Glory Hound manager looking to line his own pockets with your work.

    My 2 cents...

  15. An alternative point... on Snakes on The Net Fail to Put Butts in the Seats · · Score: 1

The fact the producers were able to sell $13.8M dollars of dog excrement is not a sign of internet hype failure. More that is was a B-rated movie.

Just look a Serenity, without internet hype it would have brought in $2M not $20M.

  16. CDN Government on Did HP Defraud the Canadian Government? · · Score: 1

Speaking as a CDN, I would go with the followng description of the assumption:

DND: We want a program to do this. We will pay yu 160,000,000.
    HP: Okay, sounds good...
DND: Delivery Day: This is not what I ordered. Your software is not psychic, and I need something that will do my thinking for me.
    HP: Uh huh....
DND: We are mental rejects so will make this a issue. Definition of CDN Government.

At least the CDN Government did not bribe HP Execs for support in a election. Unlike certain unnamed Quebec companies.

    Summary,
    DND: Mentally Challenged
HP: Thanks for your business. Plz come again.
