If you think an OS developer has nothing to gain from a high profile OS project you are a fool.
Reagardless of monetary gain or not the fact remains that they did not create the brand. So they should not stand to benefit from it or exploit it in any way.
Look at it this way: If they didn't have something to gain by the association with War/Starcraft then why name it that?
Only an idiot would start a project to produce a RTS with a name that's only a few letters away from an established line of RTS games.
I have ZERO sympathy for these people. It takes about 30 seconds to realize that maybe the name + genre was a bad idea. But hey we get folks starting projects all the time based on TV shows without permission. Then they come and cry months into the dev cycle when they get a C&D.
Coyboy Neal & Co, how would you feel if YOU were Blizzard and someone was trying to ride on the coattails of the brand you worked your ass off to build?
After more than a few commerical projects where people don't know the meaning of whitspace (or commnets for that matter) I'll take Python's forced whitespace any day.
Contrary to what you might think. Some people would like to see the Hitler of the 21st century shutdown instead of letting him continue to opress, and kill his own people.
As for the project being canceled.. If you're foreign national and you're getting funding from DARPA for fucks sake don't blab your mouth to the press. It'd be like going into a job interview with Honda and saying "I think your cars suck and anyone who drives them is a moron please hire me."
I agree. With net access/broadband still out of reach for huge segments of the USA population why on earth would we worry about another country?
Oh wait, that's right the big bad Americans aren't aloud to take care of our own we have to give handouts to every country that asks even while they protest against us.
Many phone companies will not do anything to improve a line unless you can't connect below their threshold in BPS. Last time I check with my local company 14.4 was the cut off. At that time I was connecting at 23k on what should have been a 56(53)k connection.
When I worked at Compuserve they forced us to switch after the buyout. The rational was that by all of using it the AOL mail system would improve.
Problem was that it never got better. Basic features of mail clients were discarded as not nessesary for the typical AOL user.
And then of course they created the "IMAP" interface to their mail system. Except it was IMAP without any of the features of IMAP. Their implementation was essentialy a POP3 interface running on the IMAP ports.
All ISPs get asked to indentify users. Most ( including AOL ) fight every step of the way to protect their users. And when it comes down to the wire only release exactly what is requested never voluntering anything.
However in cases where laws are violated ( such as kidde porn ) they'll gladly jump into the fray and help however they can to provide evidence and inforation.

Honestly? I think it's lame as hell. I mean really folks, if you want to write a game great. At least TRY to come up with your own idea.

I can think of one good reason to simulate humans in the future... Gigapets.
Can you cite an example of a local law that allows theft? If not then consider who the stupid one is in this case...

Never underestimate grifers. If there's PD in an MMO the only people playing it after a month will be griefers.
And yet all the file sharers who are criminals are treated like heros...
I don't condone the RIAA breaking the law to go after these guys but I have ZERO sympathy for their "victims".
Here's the bottom line: You KNOW trading MP3s is illegal, regardles of your personal views on the matter it IS against the law.
If you want your privacy respected, RESPECT the law!
I think the RIAA are a bunch of swine myself, but sheesh people you are breaking the law, they're in the right you're in the wrong.
Wow are we a bit jaded?

Bitching about lockups when you feed it a quicktime and tell it that it's an MPEG. "Gee when I pour syrup in my gas tank my car locks up."
".." for unix geeks yeah that anyone with a CLUE mac boy.
Fucking hypocrits

They have a partner agreement with NY Times at least that bypasses the registration requirement.

The CW I was handed when I looked into satelite ISP services is that the high latency of the connection makes it useless for gaming.
If you want to surf the net or read email you're fine. Try anything which requires a low ping time and you're hosed.
YMMV but I steered clear. (Then again I can still at least manage a 45k connection.)
