Doesn't work. Gives me an error message, but no minesweeper. Win2k SP2 with whatever IE that goes with it. Never update my IE, I use Mozilla 99% of the time.

    BTW - Mozilla is unaffected.

  3. Thieves stealing from thieves on CEO of Brilliant Defends Sneaky Installation Practices · · Score: 2, Insightful

Let's see if we can sum this up...

KaZaa gets a lot of bandwidth from people who are downloading and trading music/video/software on a peer to peer basis. Many of these people do not own what they are distributing/trading. They are thieves.

KaZaa sells spare bandwidth on that network to Brilliant. Kazaa makes money off of the thieves.

Brilliant sells it for advertising, etc... they make money.

I know there are plenty of arguments about the true cost of music, so perhaps even the record companies are thieves. I think this is a case of everyone stealing from everyone. Except the artists, who are forever in the lurch.

  4. What about Clear Channel et al ?? on Can Internet Radio Survive? · · Score: 1

From what I recall, since the FCC rules on ownership were relaxed a few years ago, almost half of all the radio stations in the US are owned by just two companies. This has caused a homogenization of broadcast radio that makes alternative outlets like the internet that much more desirable. In the home or office, internet radio can compete directly against broadcast without the cost of an FCC licenses. Scary to those who spend millions for those licenses.

I'm curious, does anyone know where Clear Channel and the other big radio companies stand on this issue? I get the feeling they'd be all for charging internet radio up that yazoo...

  5. Re:Internet radio was already in trouble... on Can Internet Radio Survive? · · Score: 1

The only time I listen to broadcast radio is in the car - maybe an hour a day. I spend at least 8 hours in front of my computer every day. Sure it's not portable, but I listen to far more internet radio than broadcast. Plus, I have much greater freedom to choose the content than I do on radio.

  6. Re:Why Internet Radio - the BBC for one... on Can Internet Radio Survive? · · Score: 1

    Many reasons -

I can listen to any BBC station even though I don't live in England. I can get music that I could never get on radio. I can also listen to old radio programs like Jack Benny... the amount of material is immense.

It's also the easiest way to get music while I'm at work. Just click on a URL... don't need to haul CDs around.

  7. No Radio? No CD? on Dension DMP3 MP3 Player Reviewed · · Score: 1

Reasonably good idea, but kinda seems limiting.

There are times when I like to listen to news rather than music - need a radio. I think one of the many MP3 car CD players already on the market would be a lot more appropriate. That way you could play MP3s, regular CDs and listen to broadcasts as well...

  8. Eee Gads! I though it was non-shut-down-able... on Kazaa Admits to Morpheus Shutdown · · Score: 1

Just goes to show you... I guess it's not really peer to peer, seems more like master/slave... I hate it when that happens, you get into a nice realtionship with a bit of software, then they freak out on you and change the rules. Kind of like some of the women I've dated...

Here's a question - is there a way to tap into the Kazaa/Morpheus community with OSS or something else that's not controlled from above?

  9. Availability of talent? on The Price Of Doing Business · · Score: 2, Insightful

The one problem is - a tech company is composed of talented individuals. Most of the really talented people can find good jobs within their area, so they have less incentive to move to Podunk for just their career.

You can move the company, but if only the lower half of the talent pool follows, it's not a very good decision.

  12. Re:This could revolutionize the 3D modeling indust on New "Power Glove" for the PC · · Score: 1

I've used/reviewed most of the major haptic devices that have emerged over the years for a major trade magazine covering 3D & CAD. TI looked at the spacemouse and PHANTOM, from Sensable (kind of a reverse version of the Immersion digitizer) this year and a couple of more whose names escape me over the past few years, including some gloves. None of them have impressed me, and I get the feeling this glove won't either. The reason you don't see these in production is that they just don't have the finesse of the real world, and are clunkier to use than a mouse. I'm still waiting.

The only case fan is on the hard drives. Of course, the 2 PIIIs have heatsinks/fans, but I found the system runs perfectly cool (38C) without the 2 extra fans on the back of the case. Not needing a fan at all is the best redundancy. Plus its ultra quiet.

I found a great 4U rackmount case that's all aluminum. Looks great, lots of drive bays all for under $200. As for heat, it seems as though my CPUs run at about the same temp as in my old steel tower. Of course, the aluminum case only has one fan, the tower had 4, so it's not quite apples to apples.
