I had the same problem playing back 720p MKV on my Mac Mini as you. I have a Core Solo 1.5 GHz and nothing that I tried, VLC or MPlayer, would play them back smoothly. Recently, I stuck Ubuntu 8.10 on my mac mini and was very surprised to see that it played back 720p MKV flawlessly with VLC. I really don't understand why VLC played the files so terribly under OS X and was able to play them fine under Ubuntu 8.10, but I am happy with the results. Now if only I could figure out how to get my apple remote to work with VLC in Linux.

Why do you discredit scientists who work with the military? Some pretty good stuff has come out of science developed for the military. Have you have ever ridden in a jet, used a microwave, or admired anything mankind has done in space? War is ever present throughout history, to say that the scientific innovations that have come out of can't change the world for the better is utter foolishness.
Wrong! I took it the 2nd year it was ever done in C++, that was 2000. So lets see C++ in 1999,2000,2001,2002,2003. I count 5 years of C++ and now Java in 2004.
Ok I will bite... I am graduating with a CE degree and these are the math courses I have had to take.
Discrete, The most relevant course for programmers, involves studying discrete values, probability, some number theory, and lots of logic.
Linear Algebra You don't want to miss out on this one, learning to solve problems using lin alg will make your code work when others won't.
Calculus I took three semesters of this (differential, integral, and multivariable). I would recommend that any CS student take at least two semesters of calculus.
Differential Equations I would not recommend taking Diff Eq to your average code monkey CS student as it is not directly applicable to most coding projects. However solving some Diff Eq problems is a real bear, and very hard to do without the help of a computer.
Cryptology Probably not offered by all math departments, but certainly worth taking if it is. At my school it was roughly half math majors and half cs majors in the course.
I found another article in this months IEEE Spectrum to be of more interest. It sounds like science fiction stuff to me, not all what I am used to reading in Spectrum. Anyone ever heard of "electric rainmaking" before?
You produce murder rate stats for London, New York, and Washington DC. All of those cities have one thing in common, it is essentially illegal to own a handgun in them.
I would be interested in finding out the mugging rate of London and comparing that to some American cities where they don't have total GUN BANS.
I proudly wear my iPod white earbuds everyday, and the thought of getting mugged has never crossed mind. My since of security lies in two areas.
1. I live in the US, muggings (and sack beatings) are quite low in the are which I live. Now in the UK, where I assume "West Midlands" is, muggings are much more common than in the USA.
2. I carry a concelead handgun. Should someone attempt to mug me they would be quite sorry.
They put in translucent move, but have they added wireframe yet? Opaque movement looks horrid on my machine, and is currently stopping from using Gnome with metacity.
