You just described me to a T. I'm a registered Republican, but I get tired of their family values rhetoric too. But I don't get why people think the Dems are so much better. They would just take away *different* freedoms (eg guns). The way I look at it is the Republicans have the Religious Right, and the Democrats have Jesse Jackson, Micheal Moore, etc. Both parties have positions that most moderate, sane people will vehemently disagree with.
Both parties have axes to grind. Most of the Dems would have our guns if they thought they could get them. I'm a registered Republican, but I vote for candidates, not parties. I think both this bill and Mr. Hatch suck dick.
Do you really think that any of the major PC makers will be willing to risk incurring the wrath of Microsoft? I somehow don't think MS would be very happy with a PC company that shipped an alternative browser. As for the Favorites folder, Mozilla has to be it's own product. Is "Favorites" really a Windows folder or is it an IE folder? Hard to tell anymore. You just can't expect Mozilla to do things exactly the same way as IE.
I have to say I'd prefer the Sony standard (Blu-Ray) over HD-DVD. The capacities are greater (up to 27GB), so you can still use MPEG-2 and fit a whole movie on a disc. With HD-DVD, they would have to move to MPEG-4.
It is unfortunate that it only works with iTunes, but the target market is probably those who already make heavy use of the iTMS, in which case they're pretty much locked into Apple anyway. It's not perfect, but it is pretty cool.
Ok, if your credit is significantly damaged by a few payments being a couple of days late, you had shitty credit to begin with. It usually takes several missed payments before a creditor will report you.
"I don't know if Firewall/enable is the factory default now, but it might be. Problem solved? Not exactly -- there are lots of older units out there, and very few users have the ability or knowledge to do a firmware update."
Not the knowledge maybe, but ability? Have you upgraded the firmware on one of these things? It goes pretty much like this:
1. Download the file from linksys 2. Browse to the admin page and click upgrade firmware. 3. Browse to the firmware file, click ok and wait a few minutes. Done.
Good points, but as far as WiFi goes I think the technology is sufficiently complex to require the user to know what the hell they're doing. You can either have the thing be "plug and play", but wide open to intrusion, or locked down and double your support costs. If you've taken basic precautions (eg changing the default password), this bug is a lot less severe. It's time joe user started taking some responsibility for security too.
Even calling this thing a concept car is pushing it. It's sort of cool, but the chances of anything that even remotely resembles this making it to market are pretty much nil. 1 person capacity? How is that even remotely efficient? Not too mention it doesn't take an engineer to take one look at that design and know that it wouldn't be safe at any realistic speed. Still, I guess it's cool that there are still companies that will invest $$ in stuff like this, even when there may be little to no payoff.
I'd love to shop at a store that doesn't require discount cards, care to tell me where there is one? I'll admit it, I have cards for 2 grocery stores. And I use them, because I don't want to be ripped off any more than I already am. Like many, I am pretty much against the concept, but unfortunately money has to come first.
How many ways are there do define fragmented files? If I can read the file starting from the byte address of the first byte of the file sequentially all the way to the EOF, it isn't fragmented. Otherwise, every time I have to jump to a non-sequential byte address, that's another fragment. Am I missing something?
Yes, but Apple really should offer native WMA support for the iPod and iTunes. If their goal is to sell iPods, then the iPod needs to be the most compatible player available. "No matter what kind of music you have, you can play it on your iPod" That would be a powerful marketing tool.
I think this is mostly true. For example, the company I work for actually holds the patent on "Client/Server Technology". I don't think it's likely that any effort to enforce that patent would be fruitful at this point, not that we have any intention of trying;)
Apple has done a little work in this area. I know a big issue to lots of PC iTunes users in the first version was the simple lack of a Maximize function. You had to manually resize the window to fill the screen. They have since corrected this, but I agree there are still other inconsistencies. I absolutely despise Edit | Preferences for example. I guess Apple assumes, probably correctly, that PC users are more tolerant of apps that buck the system than Mac users are.
So if I asked you whether I should say the "word" irregardless, or stick my thumb in your eye, you'd flip a coin, huh? Give me a fucking break. If someone wants to sound like an idiot, that's they're prerogative
Multiple tabs? Uhh, we're talking about Thunderbird dude, not Firefox.

How 'bout cat foo.m4p | sed 's/geID/xxID/g' > foo.m4a

Not exactly rocket science - even for joe luser.

What exactly do their Thinkpad configurations have to do with their support of Linux? Last I checked, Linux was originally developed for x86. . .
As long as we're picking nits, deltree doesn't exist on modern (XP/2k) versions of Windows. Use plain 'ol del instead.
. . .and China will come up with an incompatible email protocol, and rid us of much of our spam problem ;)

No middle mouse button? Does anyone out there NOT have a wheel mouse nowadays? I can't live without one. The wheel doubles as a third mouse button.

24000 gallons of water weighs 99.96 tons.
Load capacity of a 747 is just over 116 tons.
But yeah, that sure is a lot of weight. Amazing aircraft.
To answer my own question, a google search turned up this link, which looks pretty informative.
The article isn't exactly heavy on details. How does the thing work?

As I said, it's my prerogative to say they're instead of thier ;)
