Everyone has gotten benifit by the work NASA has done. When you start putting use taxes in place it helps if the people how use the "service" are the ones that pay.
But they can hire someone who can. Thats how programers will make money in a GPL world. There will be lots of work it just will be different work from the work people are doing now.
Neither, thats what.UK and.US are for. I think domain names should be simplified. There would not be half the problems if the system was not being abused. What would be so bad about birmingham.al.us and birmingham.uk
IT IS always a temptation to an armed and agile nation,
To call upon a neighbour and to say:--
"We invaded you last night--we are quite prepared to fight,
Unless you pay us cash to go away."
And that is called asking for Dane-geld,
And the people who ask it explain
That you've only to pay 'em the Dane-geld
And then you'll get rid of the Dane!
It is always a temptation to a rich and lazy nation,
To puff and look important and to say:--
"Though we know we should defeat you, we have not the time to meet you.
We will therefore pay you cash to go away."
And that is called paying the Dane-geld;
But we've proved it again and again,
That if once you have paid him the Dane-geld
You never get rid of the Dane.
It is wrong to put temptation in the path of any nation,
For fear they should succumb and go astray,
So when you are requested to pay up or be molested,
You will find it better policy to says:--
"We never pay any one Dane-geld,
No matter how trifling the cost,
For the end of that game is oppression and shame,
And the nation that plays it is lost!"
I work for Empirix.com programming test systems that test voice recognition/response.
To write these tests you often recored what the user would say to the system "1017" for flight 1017 then play it back at the correct time in the menu. We like to get our customer to recored the message so there is no question about how it sounds or is said. But sometimes we recored the system itself. Often the system has trouble even understanding its own voice.
It is also amazing how fast people who test these systems manually learn to speak so that the system understands them. Automated testing using recorded prompts makes a difference.
We collect some of the prompts we get back from systems

While it may take 5 to 10 years for changes like this to start having an effect. More programmers more practical applications. Free Software grows with the user base (and programmer base).
I think we should be asking what we can do to help. You could say invest in this process.
For instance should we through the FSF or another organization make sure that the local languages are supported and/or that applications that make sense to local people are written. We could also put efforts behind developing an open hardware slandered for development.
So what could/should we be doing to help/invest in this process?
What about Net-News it is an existing system that could distribute the patch to many of the people within a day.
The new kernel could be released,
mirrors and approved developers could have access to kernel.org for the first 3 days. Then only be patch downloads from kernel.org for the next 4 days.
BUT through net-news and most people would have it in a day.
The kind of development being done is going to have
a large part to play in how well the time and budget can be estimated. Projects that build applications automating known systems using strong toolkits should be more estimateable than leading edge mathematics and science driven projects.
When this comes up I always think or the evil officer pointing his gun at the scientist and saying "You will launch the new rocket by midnight or I will kill you." As if somehow stress will make the careful scientific work go faster.
I also wonder if this is a chaos problem. If someone could make really good estimates would knowlage of the estimate effect how the project is carried out causing the estimate to be wrong?
Or would being able to make good estimates cause management to under estimate even more often.
I would like to see results of projects estimated by a independent party that does tell the primarily parties of the results till after the project is finished.Would these estimates be correct more often.
Do not let artists or other content creatores distribute products without paying the studio or label.
If they control the press than artiests will only be able to say what the studios and labels will let them. At the price the studios want to pay.
Artists will not get payed and audance will pay more.
Are the record labels just clueless or is there some other diabolical plan in the wings?
There may be. The copying/piracy argument is only a front. It is the CREATION of content that the studios and labels are worried about.
There economic mode is to control the access of artists to audience and make money by charging as much as possible to the audience and paying as little as possible to the artists.
So if they can get most people to use a player that only they can create content for then they can squeeze the artists. As long as it is possible/legal to may copies you can make originals.
This is why we as information smiths need to get artists on our side. Once content begins to travel from artist to audience (and the rewards back the other way) without the studios and the labels then things will begin to change.
Could this not be done with some kind of auto mirroring?
Each application would have its own tree and could have bin, sbin, lib and/or other directories.
These directories would be marked or registered so that they would appear as if they were part of/bin or/sbin exec... That way we only need a short path but we still maintain application separation.
I know what we (the Geek community) know Hack/Hacker means. But in this case it would be good to define it for the Sony letter reader or even use different words.
Before I buy a new gadget, I go online to how hackable it is. Hacking with the gadget is more than half the fun.

If slashdot could provide a public key server and support encripted traffic for logged in users. There would be a wedge to start pushing at least our own comunity to use PKI.
I have could my medical records on my own site, or better yet imbedded in a ring or a watch or even in my body. Then I can have both privacy and access on my own terms. When it comes to services I can access offerings myself (or have a program to do it for me) why do I need to give someone else my likes and dislikes to get these effects.
(I use the work effects here because it is the effect that customers want not the service.)
What this comes down to is will me (or the programs under our control) do these things or will others that any not have our interests at hart do them tofor us?
There is even a graphic novel about it. It must be 20 or 30 years people have been waiting for this book once young authers have been waiting to see there work published.
Year after year Ellison clames in is going to the publishers any day now. But it never does. He won't return the story, he moves it from publisher to publisher collecting more money each time.
This person may not be in a position to cast stones.
You are bleading in your car after a crash. The paramedic looks in the window and asks if you have $100 before he will help you.
He has the IP in that he knows how to help you.
He has the PP in his kit.
He has a right to charge what he wants for his these things.
I think even the most strident freemarket supporter would say that to withhold medical care is wrong. Is it realy so different when the IP is a drug and the crash victom is from the third world?
In this text John Gilmore brings a number problems with the "new copyright". First it prevents legal copies like backup, quotes, and satire. Second it removes the Constitutional end to a copyright. Third if prevents others from publishing by creating a barrier to entry into the media. He also brings up that it prevents the user from using there property as thy wish and it makes a joke of the 5th amendment by making search without probable cause a fact of life.
I would like to add that to maintain this "new copyright" there will need to be more, bigger, and more powerful "police" like organizations. The SPA and the MPAA are already moving into these new roles. These "Police" will not only cost us money they will cost us liberty.
Please explain this to your friends and associates. Even if they don't understand or with remain free, at least they will have a clue if they wakeup latter. If not we will have at least tried.
The HAM (Amateur radio) community. Has a long history of building its own satellites. They are put in orbit by NASA on rockets that are being tested. Many of these satellites have been lost to launch problems.
There is a lot of similarity between the Hacker and the HAM communities in fact some of the first networking code in LINUX is the amateur packet radio code.
I ask, knowing full well that few of us have that kind of bravery in our harts. We should raise a glass to such heroes, and pray we never have to go there. For if God or loyalty call us to such a place. I will only ask that it be quick and clean not slow and obscene. While if there is to be time between destruction and death let there be duties to keep our harts and minds from the pain.
If I remember my ethernet a cable of this length could result in out of domain collisions between packets. This would could decrease network proformance.
I don't hink this is a criminal matter, just a good time to have the students take out the cable and don't do it again. (If they then did it again well then....)
With encryption to screen/speakers and monopolies like DCC this will just keep getting worse. If we don't stand together and fight for all our freedoms we will all loose. Letting this new breed of proprietary drivers out of the bag is not the same as havering the old proprietary drives. The old drivers were just engendering tools to get what we wanted to the screen. The new drivers are Content and access control devices, intended to give companies power over what we can create and program as well as what we can speak and write. XFree please join us in supporting freedom and protecting our rights under copyright law. Please join the good fight for the long term instead of taking a victory that is hollow.
The Goverment could print it out and give it back to him, in a form he can use, on paper. I would think a few trucks of paper could do it. Kevin Mitnick with his cracker mind, penncel, and paper will be able to decode his data just fine.
