Agreed. Why stop there. You could also technologies like AMD's Cool n' Quiet.
Video card manufacurers could also implement somthing similar.
I currently have 2 machines at home: A low speced linux box for daily duties (mail, web browsing, homework) and a higher spec Pentium 4 with all the high power goodies just for gaming.
Why stop there? How about PowerPC based home desktop machines that come pre-installed with linux? PowePC based desktops that are fast, quiet, consume less energy, have open hardware specifications and sleep effortlessly (none of that ACPI baggage).
Think of the power savings for those who like to leave their PC's on for filesharing or whatnot. Would also make for a better nights sleep, if the ATX case is in your bedroom.
Thanks to you keen insight sir, the proce of tea in China have reached and all time low.
Now exuse me while I clean my belly button with a rusty brillo pad, though I have to be careful not to form a vacum between the brillo and said navel. Would hurt like bitch when I pulled away.;)
...the Opteron 150 looks like the fastest x86 CPU on the planet.
I know I might be nitpicking here, but I really wish the Opteron series of chips incorporated AMD's Cool 'n Quite technology. From what I read on their website, with a supporting motherboard and driver (2.6.5 has a native driver) the Athlon 64 can scale down to 800Mhz, cool enough for the system to shut the HSF and case fans completely offoff.
One demo I saw online had a Athlon 64 SFF computer playing a DVD while the AMD cool 'n quite app was shoing the the CPU at 80hz and the system was totally silent.
Coudn't server rooms benfit from the reduced electricuty bill also?
Got tired of waiting for the perfect monitor, if there will ever be such a thing, and resorted to having a CRT and and LCD on the desk. The CRT is my gaming monitor, the LCD for everything else.
Linus is processing around 50 patches a day, 365 days a year.
Bullshit. The guy never gets out to take a walk, or go for a drive in that yeallow sports car of his or, heaven forbid, take his kids to the fucking zoo for the day.
Yeah, he just sits there, 365, 24x7, turning out patches.
If the average user knew that they could get to a working system with all their applications and files open just like they were the night before, in a matter of seconds, I'm sure alot more would make use of it, and almost demand it as a standard feature.
The sleep states aren't widely advertised in the Windows world. Mac users are, from what I read, fond of the sleep mode. That fact that the LED on Mac machines "snores" (flashed briefly with and increasing intesity, followed by a decreasing intensity) really says something.
If the PC is to become a de facto part of life, like cable TV and the telephone, it has to be ready to be used at a moments notice. People hate (myself included) waiting for their machines to boot up, even if it's 1-2 minutes.
Personally, I think when ACPI in Linux has matured, and if the hardware manufactures even get their act straight regarding their ACPI tables, S3 sleep will be a rock solid feature that many "average" computer users will embrace.
That can't be right. I thought the Duke Nukem Forever release was defined as the last discrete event to happen before the universe collapses completly.
No, no, no, you silly man. First, Duke Nukem Forever get released. Then Slashdot reports on it in an accurate and grammatically correct manner and in a manner adherent to highest ethos of journalistic reporting, and without a biased editorial rant/slant thrown in, AND they promise not to dupe the story. THEN the the universe collapses.
"Of course, the only drawback is that this new interaction is completely tied to.Net and WinFX. So we see that as a very big danger. A lot of people today cannot migrate to Linux or cannot migrate to Mozilla because a lot of their internal Web sites happen to use IE extensions. Now imagine a world where you can only use XAML.
It's massive - I'm so scared.
It's spelled XAML, but it is pronounced: I'm sooo scared!;)
Hit the nail right on the head. The majority of upscale stores on Madison Ave. are money losers. Their presence there are psychological upscale billboards. I'm surprised Apple hasn't opened a store on that upper crust avenue yet. Would do wonders for their image, even if they were selling exquisitely packaged cow turds in a fancy apple box.
Improved audio output. I understand the need to provide maximum playing time, but I would appreciate a decent output circuit to make my Etymotic ER-6 headphones shine. As of now, I need something like this to drive my headphone corectly and make my tunes sound heavenly.
Yes, I can use a more effecient pair of open ear headphones, but I don't want to be one of those jerks on the express bus where eveyone can hear that I'm listening to Led Zeppelin's "Since I've Been Loving You" at moderate to high volumes.

Like a maker of questionable vaccines, you're going to have some casualties. :P
...will make your nice shiny new computer run like an arthritic snail on sleeping tablets.
:P
Would that snail be using the cane with the built in plastic fold down seat or the walker with the tennis balls attached to the two front legs?
I always felt the latter had an edge over the formes secondary to the glide the felt on the tennis balls afforded.
Do you listen to 3:05 minute pop songs? I don't. I have a alllot of classical music I would love to take with me. They take up alot of space.
Exuse me sir, but where do i find these women that giveth it away that you speak of? For I am only a lonely slashdot subscriber.

Correction. That would be 800Mhz.
Sorry for the typo.

Oh wait, most of the geeks here already have organic material sprayd on their monitors. Never mind, false alarm!
Ice Cream has increased in price by 35-45%
I scream, you scream, we all scream for ice cream when it goes up 35-45%!!!
Sorry. I'll go back to my cubicle now.
But it's like saying you don't to mass produce your hammer, cause someone, somwhere, might crack someone's skull with it.

Reminds me of an old movie quote: "Gentlemen, you can't fight in here! This is the War Room!"

Are these devices standard? Can i just put it in my box and use it?
yes. And with the 2.6 kernels, you don't even need SCSI emulation any longer.
enjoy

Take control of that whopper of an OS.

Yup. Their certified pre-owned XP processors do well on eBay. ;)

Except that most non-techinal people love simplistic answers to complex ideas.
e.g.: "I have a 4wd vehicle, ergo: I can drive like a knucklehead in a any weatehr conditions!"
+5 Captain obvious! ;)
Just kidding, I'm Rick James bitch, enjoy yourself!
