NASA has satellites which they say can read the headline off a newspaper, and this is what's in more or less civilian hands and shown to the public...I've seen some images from this satellite, but not much, as they're too large for my video card to handle. I wish I had a link to post, but the resolution was incredible.
...but, as one other post pointed out (only one?) Cray has mentioned plans of selling beowulf clusters utilizing alpha processors. If I had the money to throw out my car window, I'd go for one of these.
I dunno, we did some pretty sadistic and cruel things to the Oregon Trail characters...a favorite of ours was to get the farmer, give him no food, and set him at a grueling pace attempting to ford(sp?) every river to see how long until they died. There's also that whole hunting aspect of the game.
From what I remember, reading about the chips awhile ago (no idea what website), the danger doesn't really seem any more than that of the magnetic stripe as far as privacy goes. The chip pretty much behaves the same as the magnetic stripe, but with a greater capacity. One thing the chip can do which the magnetic stripe cannot however is store algorithms for something along the lines of encryption, which would seem to only make the card more secure. The actual functionality of the chips varies though, most of the major chip manufacturers make them with different specs. The beefiest I remember seeing was a mitsubishi chip which pretty much had the same capabilities as a microcontroller when inserted into the correct reader.
I have absolutely no experience with Aeron chairs aside from the PvP comics featuring one (I'm on dialup atm so I can't go shuffling through the archives looking for the link to the thread). However my friend's dad has one of those relax the back chairs, and it is truly kickass. True, you can not really do any work while sitting in it since it doesn't fit under a desk and tends to put you to sleep in about five minutes, but it is a wonderfully comfortable chair good for mundane brainless activities, such as watching tv (Live F1 coverage of course).
I recently bought a laptop from Dell, while I primarily need it for running windows programs, I quite often think it'd be cool to have linux on it...which is where the relevence comes in, I don't recall seeing any mention of linux anywhere on Dell's site, my only options for an OS were Windows ME, or Windows 2k for $n more. At the time I was thinking something along the lines of "man, it'd be cool if I could get one of these with linux already on it."
bah, you just need to program the batter to hack into the pitcher and replace all the pitches so it only throws fastballs down the center...basically baseball would turn into a game run by scr1pt k1dd135
I'm not surprised in the least they used SGI, after all CGI and special effects are a large part of what SGI does best. I can't really think of hearing about anything done lately that wasn't on SGI (haven't researched this, so I'll probably get a bunch of 'xxxxxx didn't use SGI you moron!' replies.)
Admittedly, I didn't read the article, but dialup is already on its way out in some cities. I live in Orlando, FL, and I've noticed a significant change in phone line quality since roadrunner became available pretty much everywhere in the area. The phone company (BellSouth) doesn't really seem terribly interested in maintaining phone line quality for dialup users anymore.

Hehe...listening to it now, the host didn't practice the pronounciation of linux very much...so far she's said 'lih-nocks' and 'lye-nucks'
Man...I thought I heard Linus and Linux mentioned on the university's jazz station as I drove home from class today, I figured I was just hearing things.

That's great and all, but how does one pay with USPS? COD?

...but did anybody else find humour in the report's surprise discovery that you got porn if you searched for madonna?

Have you ever seen a fluid dynamics equation? I'm surprised they only used one processor
