  4. Browsers differences and UI responsiveness on Mac OS X Slow for Web Browsing? · · Score: 4, Interesting

I use OSX on an old G3 333MHz system and although it *is* slow in terms of responsiveness, the whole UI seems made to provide a sort of "pseudo" realism in that there is a lot of animation going on all the time, all windows support alpha transparency and in order to make dragging a non flickering experience, Apple has made every window double buffered. There *are* shareware goodies that'll turn off the shows but I think Apple made a mistake by not allowing users (or coders) easy access to a panel to turn off live scaling, live drag'ndrop and double buffering on a system wide level. I think Apple did this on purpose partly in order to sell newer hardware (from whence they gain the revenue so it makes sense) and partly in order to create a consistent "branding" in order to raise market awareness. Since I spend a fair amount of time in the terminal I'm not so affected byall this.

On the topic of browsers, MS IE is definitely the worst in terms of stability and speed in OSX. The other main contenders, Omniweb and Mozilla (and especially the Cocoa based Mozilla derivative Chimera) have improved enormously over the past year, from the point where Omniweb could not render any css or do any javascript and Mozilla crashed just about every 5 minutes to the point where Omniweb renders Hotmail better than IE itself and Mozilla now supports native UI elements and almost never crashes. IE improved a bit from the first beta version last years but has since only had the odd security upgrade and no feature or performance improvment whatsoever.

My personal two winners in the future will be Omniweb when it is fully CSS and DOM compatible and Chimera when it gets to version .9 or 1.0

I have also noticed that the UI has improved to the point where it is not that much slower than the Classic MacOS anymore and I presume that with 10.2 and further on it will get even better.

Pissed off sales staff? Companies hoping for a quick buck? I don't know. I do know that this is one of the reasons that I like OSS - no one comes round to pester me with unwanted questions , in general the OSS crowd take my privacy seriously instead of treating me with contempt, in general they provide screenshots(this is such a huge factor it cannot be streesed enough), and it is very pleasing to be able to mail a developer personally thanking him for his hard work and to get a mail back where the guy shows his appreciation.

In company intranets activeX may be used but in the public they have not been used extensively or ever become popular on a wide scale. I think it always boils down to the fact that for a long time any sort of plug-in was just too much hassle to download and so people didn't bother as well as the fact that almost all web coders have been trying to keep a modicum of compatibility on their sites and have thus been avoiding stuff that is IE only.

I'm not an American and I will be writing to the European comittee investigating MS and ask them to note this new MS licence and it's possible effects on the European Software industry.

I'm not too sure what C++ IDE's are available for Linux but I do think that they would prefer to use something like Metrowerks (there's a Linux port right?) than command line editors, because if they come from the Windows world they will be used to using a GUI and paying for their tools.

Secondly, what is this hatred of Europe thing that seems to be in vogue right now? Why is it that anytime someone asks a question about something that happens in the USA that all the insults start flying and some people who haven't ever been there start making death threats? Does this threaten your personal existence? Are you so fragile in your personality that you feel the need to respond with violence to everything?

Thirdly, carrying of pistols in Switzerland is illegal, concealed or not. You need a Waffenerwerbsschein (Weapon possesion certificate) to get a weapon privatly in Switzerland, and they do a very thorough background check before they give it to you.

Fourthly, Most of the military grade weapons in Swiss households are weapoons that swiss soldiers take home. In Switzerland soldiers have to shoot regularly at shooting stands and there is a compulsory three week military camp every year. Soldiers having their weapons with them is simply easier than having to hand it out to them every time they need it. BUT probably within the next two years the swiss will drop this and Military rifles will not be taken home any more.

Fifthly, you calling any European that has a different opinion to you Eurotrash is probably a compliment to him.

They had one of the largest stakes in Pay-TV but it just didn't take off because with cable and satellite and god knows how many channels to choose from not many were intereseted.

The same applies to MS and it's paid online gaming services: People with PC's can already game all over the net with their internet connection, which is already more flexible than MS' game options will be.
