And when Microsoft or Apple issues a patch that breaks this your daughter is sol until the patch is overcome. I don't think you want to support that. I'm sure the schools have plenty of PCs with all the required sofware on them so I'd avoid buying the PC unless they turn out to have Pentium II 450 machines with 128mb of ram.

LOL, no nerve touched. I just enjoy reading the writings of people that really believe that Linux is where it is at because of a bunch of guys sitting around helping each other out without renumeration for their work. I've been using Linux since Slack 2.x, the earliest kernel I ran was a 1.2.13 kernel, so I like it and use it. I'm not stupid enough to not realize that the reason that there is so much inertia behind it is because of money thrown at it though.

Where do you think Linux would be if people weren't making money of their distributions and if companies like IBM weren't paying people to work on it along with other OSS projects? Don't delude yourself in to believing that you'd see half of what you see without the immense interest of money making entities. Linux now compared to what it was 8 years ago isn't even close. Linux would be about as popular as any of the BSD distributions are noww if it was still all community based support and not those crazy companies asking for "silly annual payments just to get support".

They have to become part of the development team, most likely in writing up requirements. They care about software because they have to use it. They are willing to put money towards purchasing software that does what they need. I know it is hard to fathom but the economy is based on being paid for providing a useful service somebody wants. Software companies exist because they fill needs. Every company/organization can't pay to have somebody write open source software but there are companies that will spring in to existance because a need has been identified. Many companies/organizations will be willing to pay the price that software companies quote them, certainly much cheaper than paying for development on their own. One of the areas that open source fails is where something is needed but isn't considered fun or interesting to work on. Software that isn't fun or interesting is needed and there are plenty of companies that provide that type of sofware because somebody is willing to be paid to do the uninteresting job that creates the product. The whole product lifecyle is much longer than just writing the initial code.
