  1. Re:For children? on Thompson's (Mostly) Polite Interview · · Score: 2, Informative

I considered modding you up with my last mod point, but I disagree with your last statement about retailers.

When I went to buy San Andreas at Target, I was informed it was a mature game and was even carded (mind you, I'm 31 and balding :). When I went to buy Liberty City Stories at Kiddie City, I was informed that it was definately not a game for kids and I pretty much had to reassure the guy behind the counter the game was indeed for me.

If retailers had let kids buy mature rated games in the past, I don't think it's happening as much now as Thompson would like everyone to believe.

Thompson says, "Take Two has been marketing these games to our kids, and they just let the retailers sell them to kids." I'd like to see the evidence for that. I don't think enough of the general media are calling him on his assertions.

Perhaps he just he's spouting 'truthiness' (truth that wouldn't stand to be held back by facts) :)

Many years ago when I was still new with Unix, I decided one day that I wanted to remove all the dot-files and dot-directories in my home directory. I think I was trying to clean out some old config files plus a .mosaic directory or something. The remaining dot-files I needed would be easily recreated.

    So, I issue:

    $ rm -rf .*

Next thing I know I'm getting all these "Permission Denied" errors while it was trying to remove all these other directories.

Silly me, I forgot that .* would include .. :)
    Thankfully, I wasn't root :)

I don't think he's looking for any old CRT. He probably needs a CRT that'll do 1024x768@120Hz or 1280x1024@120Hz. The CrystalEyes are shutter glasses that alternately shut an eye in sync with the monitor. He's probably rendering a scene for the left eye and one for the right eye. To keep the motion from being jittery and the shuttering from being noticeable, he needs to render each eye at 60Hz. Which means he needs a monitor that can display at 120Hz.

I've done stereo on a monitor that does 96Hz, but the flickering from the shutter is noticable and hurts your eyes after a while.

No portable way to run things? Why not? Inventor is open-source. Just download, compile and run/use it. Problem solved.

  8. Re:The downsides of this on FAA Approves Sport Pilot License · · Score: 1

Someone touched on this a little earlier, but I'll try to make it a little more clear. IIRC, the USHGA concern with the Sport Pilot NPRM was that it would force the ultralight tugs used to tow instructor and student aloft would be categorized as a light sport plane. The tugs would then have to be maintained under FAA regs, by FAA licensed mechanics, and flown by pilots that would have to get a sport pilot license. It it worthy to note that a sport pilot is explicitely prohibited from towing anything (read: hang-gliders). The NPRM also expressly prohibited operating a light sport aircraft for compensation or hire. In other words, assuming the flight parks adhered to everything above, they still couldn't charge for tow operations.

In addition, one of the stated goals of the NPRM was to eliminate exemptions from Part 103. Namely the towing and tandem exemptions. Eliminating those would get rid of how a good deal number of hang-glider pilots are trained.

  9. Violates what they teach you in CA traffic school on Stoplights to Mete Out Punishment? · · Score: 1

In CA traffic school they tell violators that a traffic light is yellow one second for each ten miles per hour of the speed limit. If the speed limit is 50mph, the light is yellow for 5 seconds.

This gives drivers sufficient time to recognize the light changing and come to a stop. If you're really close to the intersection and see the light change to yellow, you know you have 5 seconds to make it through the light.

This totally blows away the rule of thumb that they teach you.
