Electron speed != current drift speed since electrons do not travel in a straight line down a wire. Electrons just sort of bounce around randomly while drifting in the direction of the current. Laser light, however, has the photons all going in a straight line.
at our house we turn off the mains whenever we add or repair switches. One of my older cousins is lazier though, and doesn't bother to turn off the mains. He actually connects holds the screws in place for 120VAC contacts with his bare hands while he connects them. He does take care to avoid touching other wires, and wears shoes to keep from completing the ground path.
For me, I'd still turn off the mains first though =p.
Here's a question I always wish I could ask managers, whenever the topic of 'outsourcing' comes up: if dealing with programmers overseas is more appealing to the bottom line, why not let your programmers work from home for 50-80% of their current in-office pay?
Um, I think the number you're looking for is much closer to 20% if you're trying to compete with outsourced labor based on wages alone...

My bad, that is a much better explanation.
In my defence though, back in my college MUDing days, when camping for respawns it often reverted into a chatroom, except you could "kill the trolls" and "take it outside":) .

Er... rogue-a-likes and MUDs are very different styles of games, with MUDs being closer to chatrooms set in a fantasy world....as such, they have very different ways of making you "happy", and one might not substitute for the other;)

case in point, a rogue program in our office P800 once left a thread running; it reduced battery life from the normal 100 hours to just around 10 hours:S
I live in Asia and have had an SMS-capable handset for over 5 years now, and I've probably received about 30 pieces of SMS-spam in that time and from only 3 or so distinct numbers.
We use a sender pays model; this is not a problem in Asia, and the extrapolation that because we send more SMS messages we have more SMS spam is incorrect.

We have a P800 for development here at the office. The jog dial goes in *five* directions 8|...
You can back out of any menu by pushing the jog dial backwards (to the back of the case). It's not readily apparent, but really handy once you figure it out...
As an aside, pushing the jog dial forward can pop up context sensitive menus... pretty cool, i only hope the jog dial is sturdy enough for prolonged usage considering the number of directions it goes in.

Yup, it's definitely not new.
My fiance's office building has an elevator like that, and her office is in the Philippines.

Texting can be _much_ faster than regular phone calls; we have "group sends" where we can text all our 20 buddies using just one message.
You also end up texting people who you know won't bother calling up about the movie or checking sites.
It may be incremental, but it is significant... good for us, bad for lousy movies...
perhaps... but PDAs on the other hand, are very compelling platforms on which to read ebooks...
