eBay and Paypal rank way up there as the most evil companies on the net. I have a friend who sells via eBay, and from what he's been telling me, eBay has been making it harder and harder to get refunds on failed auctions all the while increasing their fees.
As for Paypal, it's practically a crook's paradise (eBay is too actually). They force you to enter in your checking information if you wish to perform any transactions over a few bucks (forget the exact $). Once you've done this you are completely at their mercy to screw you over however they'd like.
With credit cards, you always have the option of a chargeback. Once you have linked your banking info to Paypal, good luck! Now they get all the say as to when/if they will give you credit back if something goes wrong. If a seller sends you a box of bricks, screw you.
Here's a personal experience I've had with Paypal. A while back I posted an ad to sell some stuff. Someone bought them and paid via a "VERIFIED" Paypal account. The buyer came by my house and picked them up in person. Everything looked legit until Paypal reversed the transaction saying the "verified" account was stolen. I emailed Paypal and all I got was one runaround after another. In fact I started getting the same replies over and over again!
My problem is, either Paypal is an escrow or they are not. If they're not, they have no right to refund the money. If they are, they have an obligation to re-imburse me for my losses. However, they took the coward's way out, refunding the money to the user to avoid being sued and losing in court for failing to protect their user accounts, and screwing me in the process saying that only orders sent by mail are protected under their TOS.
I really hope eBay and Paypal die off in really horrible deaths.
This LVS may be free, but it's nowhere as advanced as current load balancers out there.
For instance, I know of a few that will have the return traffic sent directly from a "real server" directly to the client, rather than that roundabout trip to the scheduler and back out. This is great for offloading network congestion.
Yet another domain name extension... It will never work, just like all those other domain extensions. Don't be a sucker and fork over money for thin air. Dot com will always rule.
And with the advent of powerful search engines, random typins are quite unlikely.
Instead of this why don't M$ just stop recreating folders like "My Pictures" and directing all picture saves to it whenever I reboot?
It's so damn annoying to have to delete the useless folder, browse to my preferred folder... only to repeat again when the system restarts. And if I don't delete the folder, every file save keeps going there.
No Thanks. Microsoft is full of crap. They sit around and do NOTHING for the past 3-4 years (since they slaughtered Netscape). And now that finally there's competition they get off their lazy a$$es and steal other people's ideas once again.
Most scam artists are smart enough to set up sites from free hosting companies, or use stolen credit cards to purchase paid hosting from legitimate hosting companies.
Hacking into these legitimate companies doesn't do anything to hurt the scammers.
Using that theory (or more like zainy idea), wouldn't it make sense for M$ to buy up all of Apple, Redhat, IBM, Sun, Google, and whoever else is remotely close to taking them on?
First, it would send huge red flags to the DOJ regarding their monopoly, which would most likely result in a rejection + disastrous PR.
Second, why in the world would M$ want to make themselve larger a monopoly? Just so the DOJ can FINALLY break M$ up? M$ is smart. If anything they want to be in this position (intentional or not) whereby there's hardly any competition, but enough so that the DOJ leaves them alone.
The article is short on details. Without the exact wording of the signed contracts all we have here is an imperfect conversation.
I'm not surprised though, that this type of tactic is being used on purpose all of the time.
Keyword being "escrow". If they are acting as an escrow then they need to offer me protection.
Because I was going to ship it originally duh...
I think that depends on the amount. If it's over X dollars they force you to pay via your bank account.

A lot of people pound their chests and say they wouldn't sell.... until they are REALLY offered good money for it.
Can't believe nobody has mentioned....
:p
Microsoft?

All free accounts. Most were created years ago but one was created just a few months ago. Give it a try.
Are you guys sick of google this, google that, every single day on /.? Is /. trying to kiss their ass so they'll buy this site out?
Nope I've still been able to access it in OE up until yesterday. In fact right now a couple of my accounts still work with OE.
I can't connect to any of my Hotmail accounts using Outlook Express. Maybe this is serious enough that MS is temporarily disabling all accounts?

Do you actually have proof of this (the actual usage, not the recommendation), or is this just a guess?
Imagine if they had Peter Jackson (from LoTR) direct the film, and had Lucas write it. THAT would have been awesome.
But Lucas couldn't take the hit to his ego, so he killed the movie for himself. No special effects in the world could've helped him.
Anything to take your mind off the awful acting can't be a bad thing...

M$ gets no respect from me.
If I put pics of the goatse man on /., can he sue too? :D
Do you actually have proof to back up this statement? I doubt it.

I've lost all respect for Lucas. The man can't tell a story if his life depended on it. Sure the special effects are nice. The costumes are cool.
Then comes the ridiculous story telling. Lucas needs to let someone else make his films.
That's great, because by the time the average /. user starts looking for one, diamonds might be a dime a dozen...
