Aol blocks so much mail that they end up blocking lots of legitimate emails. And the worst part is they don't even inform the blocked host why. It's a POS service.
You're talking out of your a$$. Obesity = unattractive = diminished self confidence and/or quality of life. It also leads to higher healthcare bills, which your "kids" and the "government" will likely have to help pay for.
I stayed at the Friends (--Ft) Hotel in Taipei, 'åØ--SÙ in Taipei, and à"T Hotel in Taichung. All of them came with free internet access. à"T I had to use their business center or wifi (weak signal).
Most Americans who have not travelled think the U.S. is the best country to be in. I used to think that way. I'm American.
But, after travelling to Asia for a trip, I've found that the American way often isn't the best way.
Here in Taiwan, I can get free wifi in most coffee/tea shops. In the states Starbucks charges an arm and a leg for it. Every hotel I've been into gives me free internet. In the States? Good luck. You'll get nickled and dimed to death first.
Heck they dont' even tip here. I love it. I used to think tipping results in better service. Not true at all. The service here has been excellent.
Then there's the American way of $9.99 + tax + fees + rebates + whatever they hide in small print. Here, the price you see is the price you pay. There's very little of that deceiving marketing nonsense you see in the States.
I know... this is something many of my fellow Americans won't like to hear. All I can suggest to you is, do some travelling, and then you will see...
What exactly is it about money that makes your argument valid?
If the point is to encourage the sharing of information, to better society, then why prevent someone from profitting (via GPL violations) to bring forth more innovations? How is that any less evil than say, Microsoft forcing you to license their product before you can develop code from it?
It all boils down to the mentality of, "I don't want anybody to succeed or profit". Basic human selfishness. "If I don't get rich, I don't want someone else to get rich."
I've seen the parent post modded to a 3, then back down to a 2, within the span of minutes. This just goes to prove his point. His arguments hit the nail right on the head. This is they hypocricy that is slashdot.
Go ahead, mod me down. Like I really care. Makes the point all the more valid.
To me, VOIP is just a temporary stepping stone to free voice, period. On the extreme left we have old analog phones that anyone and everyone can use. On the extreme right we have pure internet communications whereby there's no artificial segregation of long distance.
We're on our way moving from the left to the right. This takes some time due to mass adoption of broadband, technology, and some sort of universal standard. However, long distance charges and area codes bound by geographic locations are on the way out.
However, someone still has to pay for the infrastructure, the lines under the ground/ocean, to move traffic. My guess is that these telco dinosaurs will end up being compensated by charging for better quality of service to paying VOIP providers.
The author of that article is an idiot. Sorry to have to be so blunt, but he is.
Offering Paypal payouts? That's like the biggest joke of all. To be able to accept payment of decent size they already require you to have a bank account, so why not just do a direct deposit of mail a check? And let's not forget, Paypal has been known to freeze people's accounts for no good reason and take a huge chunk in commissions.
How many hours did it take you to write up all that non-sense? You're just randomly blabbing and most of it doesn't even make sense. You must not value your time much to be going through all this trouble just for rebates.
The real deal isn't that they're offering these updates to the government first, but rather, that they're DELAYING it from everyone else.
This makes no sense, since a patch is a patch. Sure M$ might earn some brownie points from the government entities that get this priority, but the resulting backlash from everyone else will be worse.
Fry's Electronics and CompUSA are notorious for their rebate SCAMS. I've learned that whenever I see the word "rebate" I skip that item and buy something else. It's become so engrained in my shopping habits that it's almost like ad banners appearing on pages I visit. I just don't see them anymore.
I've been scammed way too many times with rebate fraud. Anybody who sets up this elaborate scheme I don't consider ethical enough nor worthy enough to earn my money. If you really want to take a stand I suggest doing the same, instead of not factoring the rebate into your purchase, as that still tells them you want to buy their stuff.
Just another excuse for the pirates to go on justifying their acts. It's not a reason, it's an excuse.
Like the leechers REALLY care about the well-being of artists...
Let's suppose the artists were in fact getting a cut, the next excuse would be, "their songs suck" and "they're rich enough", blah blah. It's one excuse after another.
People who think like you should not create startups.
With that kind of statement it tells me you're not a believer in yourself, that you feel success is based on chance, rather than the real attributes that count, such as creativity, execution, and vision.
Jobs is WRONG. I've been downloading Divx encoded movies (650MBs) for a while and absolutely love it. It's not only watcheable but enjoyable!
A few more things...
1) Movies, unlike mp3's, are more of a one-time deal. Once you've watched something you often don't care to watch it again.
2) By being able to download multiple movies at once, after the inital lag, you can wake up every day and have something new to watch. I don't need instant gratification is a necessity, because if were true, Netflix would not be so popular.
3) Jobs has a financial incentive to play down internet video to disparage competitors like Archos. After all, his iPod only works for mp3's.
I'm glad Paypalsucks.com is right up there. Paypal is run by a bunch of clowns. I've known a whole bunch of people who have been scammed and Paypal did SQUAT to fix the problems.
For instance, a crook steals a "verified" account and uses it to buy something. When the real owner finds out and files a complaint Paypal immediately puts the funds back. The seller gets totally screwed and there's nothing Paypal will do about it.
So, either Paypal is acting as an escrow, or they're not. If they are, then it's THEIR responsibility to pay for the seller's loss too.
If their position is that they're not an escrow service, then they have no right to put the funds back to the real owner. If an owner is stupid enough to get their account stolen, then too bad.
I suspect Paypal does this to cover their asses. Their system allowed someone to break in, so it'd be quite easy to prove in a court of law that Paypal is responsible for stolen accounts. Therefore to protect their a$$es they give the money back asap.
Also, notice how they keep forcing you to link your bank account instead of using your credit card. This way, if there ever is a dispute, it's totally up to Paypal whether they want to credit you back or not. You have absolutely no chargeback recourse.
Paypal really does SUCK. I hope they get sued out of existence.
Ok this may be kind of OT but since this is a VOIP discussion...
Exactly how does termination work nationwide/worldwide? For instance when signed up with Vonage I'm able to call a landline with my VOIP connection. These POTS landlines can be anywhere in the country. Does this mean Vonage has physical switches in all cities around the U.S. to do termination, to prevent the long distance companies from charging them extra money? Or is this done via a contract with some backbone provider, who offers this to them and charges them a fee for access?
HELL NO!
Aol blocks so much mail that they end up blocking lots of legitimate emails. And the worst part is they don't even inform the blocked host why. It's a POS service.
With the ridiculous way Aol is blocking mail from third parties, one would need to be a moron to want to sign up for an Aol email address.
Besides, do you really want to be associated with Ao-NOOB-l?
See this is a new type of business model that Microsoft can't beat. It used to be that when they decided to bundle or bully, competitors are dead.
No more. Firefox doesn't need to make $ to survive, so M$ can't beat by price. Bundling won't work either because broadband is everywhere.
Now, the killer app (analogy) is reputation. IE has been branded as spyware/exploit-ridden. People want an alternative. IE has lost its credibility.
Another dumb prediction. Every day some "guru" has a new one.
Repeat after me:
"I am NOT entitled to free anything."
You're talking out of your a$$. Obesity = unattractive = diminished self confidence and/or quality of life. It also leads to higher healthcare bills, which your "kids" and the "government" will likely have to help pay for.

HAHHAHAHAHHAHHA that's the funniest $hit I've heard all week!
Where do these armchair lawyers come up with such ridiculous arguments?

"Two buttons will be way too confusing for your average user"
So you're saying the average Apple user will be confused, and therefore it's a bad idea.
If a two button mouse is too confusing for you to use, then you're an idiot.
Put the two together... the average Mac user is an not so bright... according to the article submitter.
"How dare he desecrate Apple. Time to mod him down."
The author of that article is an idiot. Sorry to have to be so blunt, but he is.
