The administration on the campus still does hiring for that kind of thing especially when they are looking to cut costs and bring things in house. But at the same time they do alot of research work with Microsoft as well so it's give and take.

If you are in Washington state/King County, then you bow to Microsoft's every whim. I have worked at companies that had close relationships with Microsoft and had similar emails and conversations happen when Steve Ballmer came through and saw Linux books on my shelf.

As a state/county/city, it's appalling when we could save millions when our state is in debt but we bend over vackwards for a company that incorporates in Nevada to avoid paying state taxes. Some would say the people they employ more than makes up for it but they do there best to keep everyone as temporary employees and rotate them out every 6 months to also avoid paying benefits.

If you are in any other state, call up your local news agencies, phone Oprah, call newspapers and phone a REPUBLICAN cogressman (they will make noise right now because they are not in power).

Incorrect. Using 95% of any given resource is a BAD idea because it does not take into consideration usage spikes. For instance, should we run our web servers with 95% RAM usage? Should we run our databases servers at 95% RAM usage? So why is a desktop any different? It can get spikes in usage as well from the user/s.

True the spikes will be fewer as a desktop but the system is there for the user and not vice versa.

There is no reason to "interpret" via JRuby in any case. JRuby provides an AOT compiler (jrubyc) that compiles Ruby code to Java bytecode... Yes. Thats commonly referred to as interpretting since Ruby doesn't run native on the JVM like Groovy. And unlike Groovy, Ruby can't import Java libraries or use java methods natively.

When you do things like this, you have to make sure that the two versions of licenses are compatible and this requires a LONG talk with a lawyer or at the very least posting this to the EFF or the FSF mailing lists to see if someone can come up with a fool proof solution without having to maintain two separate code branchs.

Of course it's not just javascripts fault as the browser needs to evolve as well to become an application delivery platform. Javascript was not made for that and the browser needs to evolve a bit more to become a server as well as a client.

Actually alot of us don't... only hacks support Microsoft. Most of us avoid their crap when we can and stick in code hacks for IE only when we have to. So as far as developers go, Microsoft lost that mindshare a long time ago and with moves like this, they will continue to until they decide to tow the line with the W3C so that we can all code to one standard and Microsoft can stop making our jobs so friggin difficult.
