I just wonder if the problem of this story is that M$ gets a monopoly or if the problem is that education became a market ? Just look at things, free trade is a chimera...
what a wonderfull world...
Just too bad not making them compulsary to ship linux instead of windows, and KDE with aqua style with native java compiler (gcj) !
I have read and appreciated this piece of news on/. The only problem is that it is something we all already know and that most people in the world are takin' about : US poltical system is corrupted. This is a known issue for most of the human beeing in the world but it seems some people in america don't understand it yet a simple corruption phenomen.
I think many people are still considering lobbying as a very "normal" thing in a democracy, as they consider all the problems of the us political system as "normal" consequences of democracy. But, I am sorry to say this, but I think that is just propaganda. US does not know democracy (btw the political US system is republic, not democracy), the power is not in people's hand but in coporations, militaries and powerful people as it has always been from prehistory to middle-age.
To my mind, it's very amazing to see the answers on/., it seems we have even lost the words to criticize things like this. No one even said "corruption", your language is the language from medias, a language that is not suitable for a strong criticize. Do you remember the nov-lang in 1984 ? American people is the last people to believe that the american system can lead us to a bigger common wealth, more freedom and democracy. The last one to believe this simplistic and ridiculous propaganda relayed by major medias, hollywood and so on. We are a brain washed people, no one would accept such behaviors from companies in a real democracy.
America doesn't represent a model anymore because of tons of things like "lobbying"
OK, you are right I am a stupid communist. Next comment !
Sorry to tell you this,
but I think that it becomes fairly obvious :
The american people is just accepted by the american-empire-state and the united corporates of americas as long as it can sustain a always growing economy. Capitalism isn't a stable system, it just can't keep as it is. It has to grow...and the american people will have too...
All the system wants from you is that consume more and more. Jean Chretien, the virtual canada's prime minister just said it during war on terrorism "keep consuming". All the empire wants from its people is consumption, no more decision.
This was the old democratic way. Now just keep getting fat, watch tv, buy tele marketing, buy your happiness and be prepared to the ultimate consumption : the war, and end-less war against an endless ennemy. All you will produce will be destroyed, from missiles to submarines, to buildings as in 1984 and 2001...
But don't forget that some people will still get some profit in the story.
EXTRA cheese in your BIG mac with your MAGNUM coke ?
(just remember american people just consume 25 more resources than the poorest people of the world and twice as much as europeans)
I really think companies such as Wal Mart are doing the contrary of open source : make a few people richer and the most people poorer by distrubting goods.
Would you like to see all the distribution of open source made by companies that cut off jobs in our countries ? Contract foreign dealers that have no social or ecological consideration ? Sell to poors goods created by poor and enriching a few ones ?
OpenSource is not really compatible with capitalism. Our fight is the following of many other fights in history : it just translates them into technology. For example, I see that during middle age, people had to pay a tax to their lord to use a mill, now people have to pay a tax to bill to use their computer. That's what we want to get rid of. Open Source is a quest for freedom of all, capitalism is a quest for benefits of a few.
Opensource is a sustainable way of development, Wal mart is not.
If Walmart is 900 pounds player, Internet is a 100000000 pounds medium to distribute open source softwares...
I think you shall spend a chunk of this money to create open source initiatives in your cs departement. That's what we do in our university : www.ift.ulaval.ca.
We hope our students to get some more experience in programming and to give our departement some kind of advertising when the project will be released.
Moreover, we encourage students (graduate students for exemple) to give small courses on hi tech stuff : linux, rmi, jini, xml, and so on.
Hello all,
i agree and enjoy the answer of Lord Hugh Toppingham. But i just wonder : where is the success in america ?
the environment is more and more destoryed everyday. Americas natural ressources are constantly beeing stolen and privatized.
Why do you think the 'll sign the Free Trade agreement in April : they want infinite access to the pan-american ressources !
Cause their own are emptying...
Capitalism did lead to poverty and still do.
14 millions people live under poverty line in USA according to UNO.
Is that a succeed benchmark ?
Capitalism has destroyed democraty to take the power and give it to corporation .
There is no free press, no free information, no right to workers, school, home, all is invested by capitalism.
The democraty is falling.
USSR was a one-party dictature, USA is a two-party dictature. Democraty is just a comestic !
Do you really think the last us election wasn't a putsch of Big Business ?
I think Chomsky's analysis is clever : capitalism is way to continue the economic conquest , there is the same kind of violence in globalization of 21st century and colonisation of 19-20th century.
I just wonder if the problem of this story is that M$ gets a monopoly or if the problem is that education became a market ?
