    (a typical web desigher surely wouldn't design a web page he can't access with his standard browser, would he?)

    If the vast majority of his intended audience didn't use his standard browser, he might not.

    I love Firefox to death, but if I knew that (for example) 90% of my target audience was using IE, i'd make damn sure everything worked in IE, even if it caused problems in other browsers.

    That's only my personal opinion, though.

    Remote Desktop worked like this before SP2 came out, to the best of my knowledge. Only one user can be logged onto the box at a time.

    You don't make it very clear whether he would still have been able to log into your box if it wasn't through Remote Desktop - if he could, I don't really see why you're so suprised.

    A setting to make it so you have a "protected" login of sorts would be handy, so nobody can boot you off no matter what, I agree.

    Once I'd beaten the final AI opponent nothing happened. I left the game running overnight and eventually the win condition triggered itself. A fitting ending for a horribly botched game.

    This was what really irked me about the game as well. At several points, if you didn't win things exactly like you were supposed to (or even if you did, sometimes), you'd be stuck.

    And this is exactly why Linux is not grabbing more desktop space from Windows than it currently is - apathy towards the fate of the casual user from most of its core user base.

    I'm sure myself and others hate the top 40 manufactured rubbish as much you do, but the fact remains that such music is very popular amongst a lot of people, and any decent chart sampling the general population is going to reflect that.

    As nice as the artwork is, I'd sure love to see an anime that is actually animated, and doesnt look like a shockwave cartoon.

    What anime have you actually watched? And by that, I mean something like a few episodes or more, not just 5 minutes before you formed an opinion.

    And chill with the tentacles and the schoolgirls.

    Again (even though you're probably just trolling), I have to wonder what you're watching - the only stuff I know of with lots of tentacles and schoolgirls is hentai (porno) stuff, which doesn't seem to make up the majority of stuff shown on TV and sold in regular stores in the US.

    You sound like someone that watched the godawful Pokemon or DBZ dubs, heard about/watched some hentai, and formed the usual generalizations from there.

    After watching the crime reports at my school for the last 4 years, I can safely say that one of the biggest (easiest) things you can do is:

    Never, ever let your door stay unlocked when nobody is in the room or when you're sleeping. Same goes while you're in buildings around campus - make a habit of leaving valuables unattended, and they will disappear.

    If you have a roommate, make sure this is clear as well. I've had good luck in that area myself, but if you end up with someone who doesn't like the idea, change that situation ASAP.

    If they don't do this already they should. How many times is the word "viagra" sent via e-mail? Why not just give it a value which is smaller in bit size and substitue for it. Whole sentences can be stored the same way.

    Good line of thinking. I wouldn't be suprised to see something like that popping up soon if the flood of spam continues as it has - though as a way to reduce the impact of that spam, not to allow the email servers to be used as remote filesystems.

    You do realize the term "quite likely" does not in anyway imply "guaranteed 100% certainty!". Don't you?

    Judging from my experince and the others that posted, though, the parent poster's claims of "and of course they(invites) are quite abundant on every chat system imaginable(irc etc)." and "in short: I don't know anyone who has wanted an account and hasn't been able to get an invitiation under the time what an average pop song lasts." still seem rather exaggerated.

    If you still feel like arguing, then log in. Otherwise, don't expect any more responses from me.

    Not if people keep coming up with ways to use the accounts for free while bypassing all the ads. All that storage and bandwidth has to be paid for somehow.

    Now, if they switched GMail to a paid service, something like that might be practical. I don't think a lot of us want to see that happen, though.

    How do you do basic research when you're not online and you don't have more than one computer nor a printer?

    You said before: I recently reinstalled winXP on my 'puter (shame on me) to be able to use the NetMD software.

    Judging by what you've written, this would imply that you had another OS on your computer before (re)installing XP, probably Linux. What was preventing you from looking up information and either printing it out or using pencil and paper before you wiped what was on there before?

    If this was not the case, you still could have accessed the info elsewhere. In a post farther down, you mentioned that you're in college - you couldn't go to a public computer lab? You couldn't use a friend or roommate's computer? Your school's library has no public computers? You couldn't find a 'net cafe somewhere?

    I find it extremely hard to believe that a college student (especially one who seems to be as zealous about Linux/OSS and computers as you) in this day and age can not get 'Net access for a few hours if needed.

    How so? How much more evident would searching for "turn off Windows Messaging" if you want to turn off Windows Messaging need to be?

    True, but you're at just as much fault, not being able to spare a couple minutes to turn it off, especially if it's going to cause you so many problems.

    I don't care why you're using that spelling, it still makes you look childish, uneducated, and overzealous.

    My point was that compared to the installation of a linux distribution, installing windows XP is more than tricky for the average consumer out there.

    Depends what you're willing to do. If all you're going to do is give installing Windows a half-assed try, and then use that as an excuse to moan and groan when things screw up because you didn't use common sense or basic security....Then yes, installing Linux is easier.

    Yet another example of an open-source zealot that barely even follows basic security and good computing practices when using Windows, and then screams "OMGWTF WINBLOWS SUX0RS I HATE M$!!1".

    Funny, search for "Turn off Windows Messaging" on Google. First link that comes up has the steps to easily disable the service on XP, 2000, and NT.

    If, as you say "I knew what was going to happen as soon as I plugged the ethernet in", why did you not take the time to do basic research on how to protect yourself? You could have stopped every single issue you describe with a cheapo firewall and some reading beforehand.

    Please, for your sake, and for the sake of the decent OSS advocates whose image you're tarnishing, grow up and learn what you're doing before you post again.

    Only if you hold to the attitude that if you don't like or find something useful, then nobody else could possibly get any value out of it.

    Which seems to be all too common around here, sadly.

    Flash can be a great tool for animation, games, and even site navigation if used properly.

    Yep, and when you're 42 and playing a game with your kids, and you don't have a chance to play for 2-4 hours everyday, lets see how well YOU remember where everything is. ;-)

    Heck, doesn't even have to be every day for hours, just something like a session once every week or two or even once a month would lock something like that in for me - the button layouts are really not all that complicated. Maybe i'm just different, though, I don't know.

    I'm old, and I just wish these guys would take a class on ergonomics, instead of just assuming that only 12 year olds will use their controllers.

    Hey, I agree that there's some ergonomic issues ( the gigantic original XBox controller, and the godawful Z-button on the Gamecube pad, fer instance ), but saying that only someone in the range of 12 years old can use a current controller right is just plain wrong.

    Personally, i'm 23, with slightly above-average-sized hands, and I have no problems using the controllers on the PS2 and Gamecube that I own. And as I said before, I actually found the original XBox controller to be too big, not 12-year old sized.

    The other issues I can easily see being valid depending on your hand size, but:

    The labels (start/a/b/c/d/x/y) are unreadable

    Unless you have a rather poor memory and/or only play games once every few months or something, you should quickly move past the need for having to look at a label.

    Sorta like learning to type, except easier - after a decent amount of time using a system, almost everyone i've ever seen just knows where the buttons are without having to look down all the time.

    Some of us don't want to turn an 8 hour car trip into 10.

    On long trips, yes, this may be true, but for normal commutes and other driving, where people still speed, it really doesn't help all that much.

    Also, we don't want to be so bored driving 40 mph on a wide open highway that we fall asleep and let the car veer off the road.

    Oh please. So driving fast is the only way to prevent boredem on the road? How about the radio? Books on tape? Talking to a passenger? Watching the scenery? "Must exceed the speed limit by 20+ MPH, otherwise i'll fall asleep!" is a pretty poor justification.

    And honestly, when was the last time you saw a major highway that had a speed limit lower than 55?

    but if the purpose of speed limits is safety, making limits arbitrarily too low does not serve that purpose.

    The problem seems more to be that drivers arbitrarily decide the limits are too low, and exceed them by however much they personally judge, whether it's actually safe or not.

    If you're on some interstate in Montana where most drivers are travelling at 80MPH, it is a danger in the extreme to be going 55MPH.

    But the fact remains that the people going 80 MPH are (probably, never been in Montana) violating the speed limit, and creating the situation in which someone going the posted limit is in danger.

    Seems kinda messed up when one can be essentially forced into breaking the law just because so many others are. With the violent emotions many people seem to have when you confront them about highly exceeding the limits, though, I guess it's unavoidable.

    With all due respect, how many "good" drivers do you see on the road on a daily basis. When was the last time you saw a vehical go the speed limit (not 5 to 10 mph over, but the actual posted speed limit?)

    Not many, unless there's a cop on the side of the road or something, in which case it's amusing to see 3/4 of the people around you slam on the brakes.

    When are we going to get the black box that detects assholes?

    Amen to that. I've seen more than a few people in public forums who believe their "right" to speed extends to causing physical damage to the cars of people that tick them off by driving too slow - like dropping handfuls of ball bearings out the window and such.

    Fuel cells are not gas cans, and you will certainly not be pouring gasoline into your laptop battery. Please, read before you post.
