  1. Re:Non-GPS-enabled phones... on Your Cell Phone Is Tracking You · · Score: 1

I've recently come up with an extremely high-tech solution to digital stalking via cell-phone-GPS: Press the Power Button.

Though in all seriousness, this is a substantial issue. I would NOT want anyone with 12.95 (cost of uLocate.com) to blow able to track me, quite literally EVERYWHERE I go no matter what the reason (barring emercency calls, of course. If I broke my neck, I'd like to be found, please.)

I noticed this uh...feature on my phone when I got it, (A Samsung 390 or some such) promptly read the manual, and turned it off. According to the manual; "When this feature is on, people can see where you are via gps. with it off, only emergency services could track you"
    Off it goes!

Of course, we also have issues regarding whether or not turning it off actually works, if one could spoof an emergency flag or in some other way bypass this feature and of course... of course we have government agencies bent on pinpointing terrorists within the general population based on iffy laws... That is the only situation where I would worry.

Problem is, Desktop environments are a tricky subject by virtue of their complexity.

KDE isnt something that just sits there and manages and beautifies little boxes for you. It tries to be much, much more. It's a whole "Desktop Environment" and experience. Much like windows explorer is a desktop environment, and a huge OS tacked on. Windows has been around for much longer than 7 years, and their budget is BILLIONS, where open source usually has a budget of exactly zero. Sometimes less. KDE doesnt employ legions of people to specifically make things as stupid-proof as possible, either.

In any event, there are other Window Managers that don't come with the "Experience" of KDE, GNOME, CDE, and others. Such as, windowmaker, afterstep, fvwm, blackbox (/me pimps blackbox) and a HUGE number of others. They work fabulously, quickly, and quite elegantly. As for KDE, I would say they've done fan-fucking-tastic given the budget, free development, FREE product, and so on. They are not perfect, but MS isnt either (remember code red, nimda, Blaster, Klez, and every other cirus on the face of the earth? KDE's "Experience" doesnt include mass propagating internet worms, have you noticed?)

In the interest of not excluding a big guy, MacOS is great too. Mostly because they arent a bunch of Lobotimized numbskulls who push out software as fast as possible, and they employ plenty of Interface Designers.

Yup. Started using Red Hat Linux with KDE on a pentium 120, 16mb RAM and a 56k.
It was hell I tells ya! But STILL quicker than Windows!

KDE was just so great for me then, It really helped me grok the concepts of Linux when I didnt feel at all comfortable with shells, configuration files, or anything else.

Pretty soon I was exploring my options, amazed at how many I had! I eventually settled down with BlackBox and a healthy DOS (couldnt resist) of Slackware, but I'll always have KDE, Red Hat, and 'The Red Hat Linux Bible' to thank for helping to get my foot in the door.

KDE, I didnt love you enough to stay with you, but now I've found someone perfect for me. Don't worry though, you really helped me through a tough time... and there are so many other guys out there who need you more than I ever did.

this type of comment, 'Linux isnt ready for the desktop' comes up every so often, every time i think, 'good!' maybe its not 'ready' or blah blah blah. It's plenty ready, just nobody has come around and done it effectivly (complicated by the various quirks that we (by we, i mean linux users) all have come to love) until then, i don't particularly care. It does what I want, sure more games would be fantastic, but that will come in time. like a 'desktop linux os' until then, sit back and enjoy the worry free ride (once you get the bitch set up that is) Linux won't be going away, theres PLENTY of time to cram it onto grandma's PC.

SO what you're saying, in fact, is that Bill Gates got all his money via copyright infringment?

MS stole windows from Xerox, Apple, (if my memory serves me correclty, anyone feel free to chime in if you must) so I suppose you have a point.

And then, he's actually less 'stealing' than those folks by the legal definitions in place. Yea, copy infringment != "stealing" or "theft". However, Illegal Monopolies practicing unfair, uncompetetive business practices do not fall under copyright law. (In most cases, unless they, for example, steal a GUI from Xerox.) And yes, I do own all the albums to the 6 gigs of ogg files on my machine.

Instead of making GameX (Windows) and GameX (linux)

    with q1 and q2.

    Make your game modular.

Where, I install GameX on win, and download linux binaries, and symlink to the win directory.
    C:/quake2/baseq2
    -or-
have setup for win and setup for linux. and include the linux binaries on the cd as well. THAT way, developers sell more games to more people, because they dont have to choose
'Well, do i want to play this with my hardware supported for win, or with my slightly less supported harware under linux' or maybe your hardware is BETTER supported with linux. it happens. And after youre done deciding, you can always choose to 'try out' the other version. if it works better use that, otherwise back to old.
this way, theres a merged market. and everyone is happy.

I played q2 on windows. Found out there were linux binaries and a HOWTO. 10-minutes-later i had
    q2 working under linux too.
