I haven't been in a regular big movie theater in probably 7-8 years - the damned commercials drove me away.
I did continue going to a small local chain that was great - they served good food and didn't have commercials, so I mentioned them several times here on Slashdot, but they eventually began running loud local ads before movies, instead of the silent slideshow they'd had previously, so I stopped going there, too. That was probably 3 years ago.
I'm saddened that the movie-going part of my life seems to be over:-(.
Odd, I've never heard an ad on Pandora. I've been using it for the last couple of weeks - I lost my iPod and although I've since located it, I haven't gotten back into the habit of bringing it to work.
Same here. I read posts here and on other websites until the first occurrence of 'chat5p33k', then skip the rest.
In MMORPGS, I used to add people who used it to my ignore list, but eventually just wound up leaving chat channels altogether; it was much more efficient.
Hmm, I can't proofread this post past the 16th word, hope I got it all right:-).
Nobody is allowed to be out of hearing of the marketing.
I think that's what this is all about. Cell phones are ubiquitous, and if every one has the ability to blare not only RIAA music but the advertising that goes along with it, it will be even more difficult to find silence and freedom from this crap. It's already hard enough.
You joke, but the one time that an office I work in has ever been broken in to, the only thing that was stolen was the coffee. All the expensive computers, monitors and printers were untouched.
the KMart shopping experience has become a torturous act. KMart has decided to not only carry crappy products (which arguably are appropriate for the price) but they have also decided to shaft the customer on things like keeping products in stock, hiring halfway competent employees, keeping the store looking better than an average thrift store, ensuring a reasonably quick transaction, and keeping the damned lights on (to name only a few). A lot of KMart stores have become such utter crapholes that people are going to Wal-Mart - or even the dollar store - because it is a better use of their time and money.
I worked at a KMart in the mid-late 80s. After the first year I was there, I noticed a big decline. At first, there were always plenty of employees on the sales floor - some full time, others my fellow part-time high school kids. After that first year or so, though, they started hiring fewer cashiers, and instead using the 'floor' people to run the cash registers. So there was almost nobody on the sales floor. I managed to get myself marked as 'untrainable' on the registers, so there would be at least someone out there to help people. The customers would trash the place... it was pretty sad and shocking to see what they would do.
I'm just rambling. I don't really have a point and am too busy to come up with one, so I'll stop here...
Ah, I see. I've only been to the area a couple of times in the summer, to see concerts at Meadowbrook, and while the area wasn't as crowded as, say, Hampton Beach, it was more traffic than I like to deal with.
I wouldn't describe the area as 'awful', though. (if you're saying that in an effort to keep people away, sorry...)
I noticed that all the indexing was a big drain right away, so disabled it. I do have 4 email accounts, all IMAP, with 10k, 15k, 2k, and 200 messages, respectively.

+1 DRM kills your ability to compete with pirated material. Very bad idea.
+5 vorpal DRM does an even better job.
This is nothing. For my kindergarten thesis, I used galaxies to simulate supercomputers.
Agreed, 1984 is the better year. I gradumacated from high school :-).
Hey, some of us try to live every day as if it were still 1985.
It's also changed the way some people "rite".
It's a right of passage...
I was like
That construction is as heinous as any other mentioned in this discussion, though it originated elsewhere.

Truly torturous T-title transmitted today!
Ah, I see.
And it turns out that it may well have been a red fox that kept me awake a few nights over the years...
I used to have fishercats living in the woods outside my bedroom window. I now know what 'bloodcurdling' means...
This has some recordings of their noise. (I haven't listened to them since I'm at work, so don't know how they compare to what I've heard)

Well, at least he isn't trying to teach Defense Against the Dark Arts.
Wow, very nice. Thanks for the link.
I was going to mention those, but you got there first. Curse you!

Fun Spot has a great collection. I make a yearly pilgrimage there, but I usually do it in the spring or fall, when the area isn't too crowded.
Too bad it's in the lakes region where no one wants to go.
Is that a Yogiism? Nobody goes there anymore; it's too crowded?

Here.
I'm sure that K'breel, Speaker for the Council, will deny allegations that Mars possesses plasma cannon technology.
Do you really want to be reminding them how easy it would be to replace you with a cron job? :-)
