I own one of these devices, and in the last two years have only used it "in anger" (i.e. not at my or a friend's house as a joke or demonstration) 3 times, all while standing in line, once in a bank and twice in Town Hall. All three occasions CNN was playing. I don't care about that, but when the commercials started, I shut them down. I'm not going to have assholes begging me to waste money on their useless crap while I'm in a place I can't escape from.
I simply won't patronize a restaurant with annoying stuff like that (except perhaps for takeout, but even then the commercials become immediately unbearable if I'm there too long).
I don't go into bars, so I have no problem with it there.
I believe the 'wolves' you mention were a bit more interesting than that - each person actually consisted of a pack of 3-6? creatures, communicating among themselves via an ultrasonic network. A single 'wolf' was not very smart, but in their networks they formed a cohesive intelligent 'being'. Of course on top of that they had a pretty un-alien society, but I thought the pack+network=person idea was pretty neat.
(If you're not talking about "A Fire in the Deep", ignore this - also I hereby disclaim that my memories of the novel might be a bit hazy; I read it when it was first published and not again since)
I was just thinking the same thing: "How far EA has fallen since the days of 'Archon'..."
> I guess they did become just like the record companies after all.
I guess we should have seen it coming. After all, back in those days they did sell their games in packages of the same size and shape as music albums.:-)
"For it is of old rumor that the soul of the devil-bought hastes not from its charnel clay, but fats and instructs the very worm that gnaws, till out of horrid corruption life springs, and the dull scavengers of earth wax crafty to vex it and swell monstrous to plague it."
From memory, my apologies to HPL if I quoted it wrong.
I've never come across an assembler instruction named "BNE". In x86 its "jne" and in Z80 IIRC its "jr". So save the patronising for someone who didn't do real assembler and keep your dumb made up opcodes to yourself
BNE is used in 6502 assembly. Keep your devilspawn CPUs to yourself.
I hate to help them out by saying what the product was, but... it was 'Pop Tarts' in Sunday night's episode. By a funny coincidence I happened to be eating some right at the moment it happened.
Great idea. I'd sign up for that in an instant, as long as they stop the #$%^ing blatant 'product placement' as well, as in the most recent Simpsons episode.
It's sad, but some do. A co-worker uses IE, and her home page is MSN.com. It makes me physically ill to watch her start up her browser. I always make a big (semi-joking) deal about averting my eyes. She claims to like ads because they keep her "informed". Sigh...
I don't know how strict they are about OOC stuff. I haven't seen any channel problems and I've only seen a couple of questionable character names ("Thralll", and some variant of "Legolas" I think)
Yeah, I wound up leaving the Trade channel on WoW because of the crap filling it. In EQ, I began adding all 'chatsp33k' people to my/ignore list, but it got very large and wasn't worth the effort after a while.
I do wish that they'd add a feature to WH similar to WoW's, where you can report a spammer with a right-click and menu choice.
[1]I may have tucked an onion into my belt, as was the fashion of the time, but in my day lots of people played D&D... even football players and members of the Homecoming Court and the FFA and the gearheads. The only population in my HS that didn't have quite a few D&D players was the girls. Which is why eventually D&D got relegated to geekdom, IMO.
You were fortunate. Due to moving half way across the country, I attended two different high schools in the years 1981-1984, and both fit the stereotype perfectly:-(.
> Given how much the hardcore gamers on Slashdot hate WoW, I would also predict that it is a game that is loathed here.
I don't know about that. The loathers can be vocal, but I don't think they constitute a majority among the people who care either way.
I enjoy(ed) WoW. I have 4 level 70s, and characters of every other class in the 61-65 range. I'm giving it a rest for a while and playing Warhammer. I'm enjoying Warhammer a lot, even the RvR aspect, which I didn't like very much in WoW.
Part of my enjoyment of Warhammer might be related to having chosen a 'Roleplay' server (Avelorn). I did that in an attempt to escape the d00dz and kiddiez and other annoyances of a normal WoW server. So far, so good. The spammers are annoying though, and despite EA/Mythic's banning efforts, I still get #$%^ing spams every few minutes.
I haven't canceled my WoW account. I have friends that still play it, and I plan to play it again once the new expansion comes out. But, for the moment at least, I'm really liking Warhammer.
I've been to Weird Al shows several times over the last few years, and have noticed that there a lot (maybe a third to a half of the crowd) people in their early 20s or younger. Good to see that he appeals to people who weren't even the proverbial glimmer in their parents' eyes when Weird Al was starting out...

That fits with what I remember. 'The Flenser' was the James-Bond-villain...

I don't remember anything about pigs...
GCC-1701-F?
I use (free) Gmail through Thunderbird and IMAP, and have been getting timeouts and spurious authentication failures for months.
Sometimes you do get what you paid for, but it was pretty smooth for a while.
Brain and brain, what is brain?

I was wondering whether she comes from Innsmouth.
That said, I don't find her unattractive.
My id has only three distinct numbers, can I be an honorary 3-digiter?
I believe it was some form of hovercraft.
> "IBM PC-compatible"
To this day, I still say "IBM PC-contemptible.".

Well, she's not that bad. She does hate spam.

I think I'd like to hear the Martian Defense Minister's comments on this story. Haven't heard from him (her? it?) in quite some time.

My disgust for it grows geometrically every time I read it.

> Also it may not have been dead when taken to the vet
True, it might just have been pining for the fjords.
This is not a joking matter. My dog has no nose.
