Great. You get a short term solution because these workers help us complete the technical gap. Let's say this is true for the moment, which I am quite sure many will say it is.

So Mr Patel gets a nice job with some tech firm and has a few kids in the US. What happens when Patel Jr is graduating from college and it's time to get a job?

Most likely he will not have the same technical skill know-how that his father had because he wasn't well educated here.

I am against H1-B's not because they supposedly take my job, but because it's short sighted. WHatever happened in investing into your own? In this case, for you smart asses, "your own" means fellow Americans. I want my tax dollars to go to good education programs. I want my tax dollars to go to teachers who work their asses off day and night to make sure their students get a great education.

Call it Nationalism. Call it jingoism. Call it Racism. I'm the great-grandchild of migrant Mexican workers, and if one thing is certain, we must work on long term solutions to ensure OUR OWN can have the potential for a great future.

  19. Re:H1B's are GOOD for America on 235,000 Software Engineers Can't Be Wrong, Right? · · Score: 1

Foreigners have made considerable contributions to technology in the US. The Manhattan project team had large numbers of refugees in it. Important parts of the team that put man on the moon came from the German rocket program. Andy Grove and a number of other high tech pioneers came from outside the US. Bringing in foreigners is smart.

Interesting you point out the Manhattan project, which would not be the best example for your case. First off, a few of these foreigners were later discovered to be the ones who leaked out information to the good ol' USSR. As for using the V-rocket designers, they had three choices:
    1) Go to the US and live your entire life under surveilance and never be able to leave the continential US.
    2) Remain in Germany and hope to God the Soviets would find use in that scientist.
    3) Get killed by whoever you said "no" to.

Keep in mind these were well seasoned men (and a few women too) who had degrees based on many years in the academic world. Many of these H1-B's don't even amount to that. Sure, they have degrees, but these are degrees for short programs as compared to the american or european counterparts.

  20. Re:As a former soldier, I'm all for it on Robot Wars · · Score: 1

I agree with you about your views on total war. If the technology is there, we should use it. The things that we have to keep in mind are the long term effects of using such technology in a certain place (eg, we don't use nukes everyday to solve all our issues on the battlefield). Then again, as stated previously, technology can make our enemies think twice before deciding to battle the US.

One thing that I do want to point out especially is an interview I read a couple weeks ago in the New Yorker. There was an interview with the Chief of the US Army. Among the numerous logistical issues he discussed, one comment he made stuck out in my mind--no matter how far we advance in technology, we will never be able to avoid hand to hand ground combat.

It works and has stood the test of time. Why not just etch the most important stuff in some sorta hall of records? I remember there was a huge debate about this though back when Mount Rushmore was being built years ago. The designer wanted a timeline etched beside the figures of the four presidents as well as a hall of records, but that was heavily debated over, and thus was not able to be made. Looks to me it'll be some private firm or org that'll do it. Perhaps coat etched stone with some special solution to help reduce erosion?

  22. Haruki Murakami isn't sci-fi!!!!! on Two Books from Haruki Murakami · · Score: 1

Funny how Haruki Murakami is mentioned on /. of all places. I would have never considered him to be a sci fi author.

Recently, I have read two stories by Murakami--"Super-Frog Saves Tokyo" which was translated and published in last month's issue of GQ, and "Airplane" which was translated and published in last week's New Yorker. Airplane was definitely not a science fiction book, but I could see some would consider Super Frog to be a sci fi short story. I would consider it a modern fantasy though.

Whereas Phillip K. Dick usually would tell us wary stories as to how we should be careful with our use of tech, Murakami is more about telling us how we should be considerate to others. In "Airplane", it is about how a man who has weird "moments"(can't think of a better word right now) and his woman, and in Super Frog, it is about a man who is considered brave not because of brute strength, but the selfless determination of an ordinary man to help others.

I definitely recommend "Super Frog Saves Tokyo" to everyone who is interested in Haruki Murakami. It was only a few pages long, but in light of Sept. 11, I'd say Super Frog is an interesting and fantastic read. =)
