Here at work, we have an automatic mailbot that brings around the mail twice a day.
It's loaded up in the mailroom (by humans-we're not that advanced yet), operates the elevators and follows a line of ultraviolet paint around the building. It stops at known locations and waits to be unloaded, it stops it it hits something, and can also be stopped manually.
Does anyone know yet what the official final stance is on pirated copies and their updateability?
I'd originally heard that in the interests of security, MS was going to allow illegal copies to be updated, so that there would be fewer Sassers etc out there.
However, more recently, I've heard ruminations that this was not the case, and they would block pirated copies. Does anyone have a definative answer (preferably with link, and even more preferably with a microsoft.com, straight-from-the-horse's-mouth link)?
As I was getting off the bus my iPod's headphone cable caught on the bus' door handle. THe music stopped playing, but I didn't think anything of it (the cable had gotten caught before, and it just generally disconnected the remote from the headphones).
This time, however, apparently the iPod case, with iPod inside (natch) had been pulled off my hip... and under the bus' wheels.
The hard drive was turned to dust, the screen shattered and the metallic part of the case bent in. The front of the case, however seemed fine, and the logic board looks surprisingly intact, as does the battery. I have since replaced the iPod (thank you eBay!) but am too scared to try the old battery on the new iPod, just in case.
Now whether or not your little G5 (hopefully dual) with a weak little AGP slot (hopefully at least 8x and upgradeable) will run it.
Dual 2gHz, Radeon 9800Pro, 4GB RAM had better be enough. This was all but top of the line (only the RAM would have been upgradeable) until about two weeks ago!
Does anyone know what the official word is on Mac support for DoomIII? I'd love to play this game, but I have a hunch that Virtual PC won't cut it (even if it could run on my G5)!
So, now that the site is Slashdotted due to our insatiable hunger for these images, does that mean we just wiepd out the internet connection to an entire continent?
Because that'd be cool. I mean, wrong... damn wrong.
No! Turning off your monitor and turning off your computer are the same thing. Anyone who's ever worked phone tech support can tell you that.
Plus, if you use the switch on your monitor, you can get some awesome boot times!
Ironically, this isn't far from true in the case of some monitors. I have an Apple 20" Cinema Display, and the computer's power switch if the monitor's switch, since it connects via the Apple Display Connector.
Furthermore, there is no power switch on the monitor! The only way I can turn the monitor off is to shut the computer off, put it to sleep or tell the Energy Saver System Preference to shut it down after x minutes.
So, yes, I do get good boot times using the button on my monitor.
I must say, this sounds like a tempting proposal. However, it seems to me that it would be hindered by the quality of Real's Video format. While it sreams well, I have had almost nothing but disappointing results when using Real for pretty much anything. It's video is blocky, full of artifacts, and low in both colour fidelity and contrast.
I'd love to see a DivX/Xvid mpeg4 stream service, like this start up. I wouldn't be surprised if one was in the works.
Too bad though, really, that pricing sounds pretty sweet.
Sadly Apple has discontinued Hypercard development for some years, and recently stopped selling it on the Apple store.
Still, it is a great learning tool, and if she's got an OS9 Mac (or is OK with Classic), copies can still be had on everyone's favourite global Garage Sale
The phone is for ME to call PEOPLE, not the other way around.
I actually am one of those people who has a cell phone as their only phone, hence my point of view that a phone book would be nice. However, for people such as yourself, it seems that you could just get an unlisted number. You already can with a landline, why not a cell phone?
Maybe I'm naieve, but I personally think this would be a good idea. Telemarketers are irriting, no question, but worse still is losing a phone number and being unable to find it. I don't have to refer to the phone-book too often for landlines, but every time I do, it saves me mucho effort or results in me being able to contact someone I otherwise would not be able to.
It seems of late that Apple has been focusing more and more on the music side of their business (ITMS, iPod etc).
Therefore, I can see this decision going one of two ways:
Each division focuses more on their individual strengths. Each half becomes better suited to its product, and the company as a whole grows and becomes stronger.
Apple decreases the emphasis on its Computer division to focus more and more effort on the Music side. The Mac as we know it disappears.
I certainly hope that it's #1, and I have a hunch that it is, but it will be very interesting to see what developers over the next few years.
Of course, in the future the only way to remain anonymous might be to have a name so common that it can't be filtered from the noise of web page META tags.
Of course, that's why I inted to name my kids <title>
So, my suggestion is, get him something non-geeky that he'd like or has commented on that shows you realize he is much more than just Geek.
Yeah, OK, but make sure it's something he actually wants. My GF got me a teddy bear for Valentine's last year (apparently forgetting that I'm not 8 years old) and it has sat on my dresser, price tag still attached for a year now.
What would the battery life be on such a device. My cell phone (A Motorola v60g BTW) only JUST makes it through a single day on one battery at full charge, and that's for a black-and-white screen that's off half the time (when the phone is flipped closed). And I don't even talk on my phone too too much. For an often-on, long-viewing, satellite-receiving, full colour video phone, I can't imagine the battery life would even border on "acceptable".
As a side note: I'm assuimg this phone has the typical 2" (max) screen. That's an awfully small screen to watch TV on. I wonder if there's really a demand for this (after all, one of the reasons Steve Jobs says there's no video iPods is because nobody wants to watch TV on a screen that small-a statement I would tend to concur with).
They should consider reselling them to the students who volunteered their time to help set up the Supercluster. I know they already got free pizza, but a discounted G5 would probably be extremely appreciated by most of them.
Seasonal addective Disorder
on
Global Dimming
·
· Score: 2, Interesting
I wonder if this will have any sort of noticeable effect on Seasonal Affective Disorder. It has been shown that people feel more depressed with less exposure to the sun (this disorder is especially common in winter).
It's funny, everyone talks about how people seem sadder and grumpier "these days". I wonder if there could be an actual link to this "global dimming".
"Me-sa gonna buy-sa some goods, yes?"
<shudder>

Microsoft won't be offering this service patch to those who hold pirated copies of Windows XP
I could be mistaken, but I thought Microsoft had caved and agreed to allow pirated copies acces to SP2 in the end.
As I say, I'm not sure, as I'm not a Windows user, but my roomate is and said they were allowing pirated copies to update in the name of security.

If your car spends too long near your competitors office, who knows what the corporate response would be.
So, take a cab!

This can't be a Half-Life 2 Case....
it was actually released in our lifetimes!

See, for me it's support of Sun Audio (AU), IMA ADPCM and PSION sound formats (see details of these here)
How dare Apple mock my insistence on using these obscure^H^H^H^H^H^H^H highly reputable formats!

Sweet! Now I really can build a Beowulf cluster!

Probably not so much if/when the lower half turns out to be fat and hairy. And have a penis

You don't have a fad ass, it's just a bad angle!
