Taxpayer dollars? Eh? SCO is suing IBM, the state isn't involved at all except to provide the mediation via a judge and a courtroom, etc...

This sort of this is already budgeted in and doesn't cost any more money.

It would be a different story if it was the state of California vs. SCO...

I'm not saying something shouldn't be done to stop piracy, but not this. Never this.

Besides, how is this different from people downloading music? I see all these comments justifying this guy. People who pirate are evil. How hypocritical is that? "It's ok to steal from him over there, he's rich. But don't steal from that other guy, he's a struggling programmer."

    Bullshit.

Doing one malicious act doesn't justify retaliating with another malicious act. This is what the law / govt. is for. This programmer should be treated like a virus-writer. Send him to jail and take him to civil court.

Let's say you steal my car. If I find you and kill you, I still go to jail. If this were the case, the world would be in chaos.

Just look at Isreal. Retailation after retailiation on both sides. Granted the situation is much differnt, but the justification is the same. "X killed a number of people today in retailiation for what Y did last week." How many times have I heard that?

I said, that this sort of thing happens all the time. Look at any industry and at any corporation. When something new comes out, the rest of the competition scrambles to come out with the same thing (or something similar). This isn't bad. It isn't wrong. It isn't evil. It is COMPETITION! This is what happens in a capitalist society. Coke invents Vanilla coke. 2 weeks later Pepsi has the same. There is a low carb craze going on, and all food stores / companies are getting a piece of that. One cell phone company starts offering flex anytime min. so the others come up with similar plans...

I'm not defending MS. I'm defending the idea of capitalism. Calling MS out for doing this is stupid and comical.

I hate how everyone jumps on MS all the time for practices that are displayed throughout society.

    Yes, MS is evil.
No, they are not the only evil company out there.
Yes, they do some downright dirty things.
No, not everything they do is bad.
Yes, the bottom line is in fact the bottom line when we talk about corporations.

Make these distinctions in your arguments and they will be well formed, valid, and believable. Ignore the distinctions, you become hypocritical and your arguments mean little.

    Pretty cool stuff.

  21. Re:Why don't they..... on AMD to Demo '8-socket' Dual-Core Opteron System · · Score: 1

It is more complicated than that.

We're talking about servers here as opposed to desktops. In a desktop, absolutely, lets get those hard drives faster, and get rid of some of the latency. A personal computer is constantly reading / writing depending on what the user is doing.

But for servers? It is more about handling thousands of requests at the same time, as opposed to accessing the hard drive. Generally servers have gigs of memory, so it becomes less important on how fast they access the memory as it does on making sure the needed information IS in memory.

If the CPU can pre-empt or predict what to put in memory before it is needed, there is a HUGE bonus on speed. Plus, why would AMD research hard Drives? They are a CPU maker.
