It was never at 85. it opened at 100, and if you were smart enought to buy then and sell at 140 then you made a little bit of cash. If you were smarter and did't buy, wait until about 3 months from now when the price is like 20 - 30 dollars. Besides it is at 103. so we've seen a 40 dollar swing in 3 hrs. Yup. lots of chumps out there.
If you were not so smart to buy and then sell quickly, pull out now before the bottom drops out.
The only people who make money on these kinds of IPOs are the broker firms, 'special high influence' people, and the employees of Google who got their shares dirt cheap / free.
AHAHAHA!!! You still use a VCR!! I got some old tapes for you if you'd like. How about my comedore 64 too? By the way, nintendo released a better system about 15 years ago called the Super Nintendo...
I think it is time you took off your jelly bracelets and cut your hair...it's time you upgraded man.
I don't think that is true. No company *has* to go public. Also if there is pressure from the SEC to go public, why did they reject Google's recent IPO bid? Also, also, how would their competitors have an edge? They only have to disclose their balance sheet. That doesn't reveal any sensitive information that would benefit another company.
From a cnn article: "The moves come the day after the Securities and Exchange Commission declined to declare the registration effective, as Google had requested. An SEC official would not say why the agency hasn't signed off on the IPO. "
The funny thing is, is that 80 dollars a share is STILL way overpriced.
This is not a billion dollar company. $80/share has to put its P/E ration close to 100 if not over, esp. since they are cutting the number of shares available...I'm too lazy to do my own calculation.
Frankly, between all the shadyness (SEC filings, then a new filings to reverse their old filing, missmanagement of shares, etc...) of this IPO, I lost interest a long time ago.
You are exactly right. I'm sad to say but to me it looks like one of the reasons they are doing this is to make millionaires out of the employees.
Google is a search engine and they are making a lot of money (supposedly). The reason to go public is to raise capital for future ventures... What is google going to do?
They aren't a Yahoo, and I don't see them becoming a Yahoo. Even if they wanted to be more like a Yahoo, they don't need an IPO to do so.
They aren't a software / consulting company trying to expand their market with new clients or new products.
So unless they have something sneaky up their sleeve that I'm not thinking of, this is just a way to make a bunch of money. The only difference between them and one of the.coms is that they established themselves first, so it looks more legit.
"...Google shareholders are also reducing the number of shares available for sale by 6.1m to 5.5m. The total number of shares available is currently 14.1m."
So are they cutting the total available by a specific number? Are they saying the new shares available are 5.5m? Are they cutting it by a range in numbers yet to be determined?
This might be a little too late in the discussion to get an answer, but...
If this were to happen, wouldn't this make the need for less RAM? If we can read / write to the flash 'hard drive' nearly as fast as we can the system's memory, then what use do we have for RAM?
I didn't read RTFA, so I don't know the benchmarks for the read / writes, and I'm also playing devil's advocate a bit... But still, would we eventually see RAM and storage space becoming integrated shortly (relatively speaking) after introducing flash hard drives?
...sarcasm... You're right. We shouldn't discourage this kind of act. Let them learn how to compromise the security of systems. Let them mess around on companies networks. Who cares about lost revenue or if a few credit card numbers or other valuable information is leaked. The kids are harmless right? They won't try to profit from that.
And all those viruses that get written for windows...let's not stop those people either. Most of the time they are just kinds / young adults learning how to program, or how *not* to program. They are just learning how to write more secure code. After all if you know how to compromise a system then you can make yours safer right? It doesn't matter than big business is disrupted and millions of dollars are lost to these actions... they are just kids.
Won't someone please think of the children!?! ...end sarcasm...
Please. This is like any other wrong / criminal act. It should have consequences. If you break into someone's house and steal, you go to jail. Why should it be any different for sensitive information contained on a computer system?
I can't believe how many people are upset about this. New content comes out and people bitch and complain. Quick, someone call the whaaabulance.
I was going to explain why this is a good thing, when it hit me. People aren't bitching about the new content, they are bitching because...
They don't have XBL and can't get the content
Don't have an XBOX, and therefore, this must be substandard because their PS2 or GC is better.
Hate MS, so anything that is connected to MS is bad
Come on people. Let's use a brain here. Do you bitch when blizzard offers an update to Diablo II to make it fun to play again? Add new items, balance the characters, change the enemies? No.
Do people bitch when your MMORG (or whatever the acronym is) gives you new stuff? No.
They don't have to, but they do it to keep the game fresh and playable. Blizzard does it for free. MMORG's do it as part of their agreement to you. You pay them X a month, they promise that their servers will work and your game experience will improve.
So why is it so wrong when NG does this? You bought the game for 50 dollars. They already fulfilled their agreement with you. They provided you with an enjoyable game. They owe you nothing now. But to keep you coming back they release new content the most effective way they know how: XBL. They didn't have to...but they did.
So now you complain because XBL costs money. Well if you don't like it, don't get it and stop bitching. XBL is a service to connect you to other people playing the same game. Just like the Internet connects you to content you want. You don't need it, but it is nice to have.
Personally, I think this is great and hope other game makers take the hint and do the same. There is nothing I hate more than playing a game a second or third time and finding out that it is exactly the same thing I've already done before.
Take days to install, update, tweak, configure, get programs, update again because you're missing the new libraries for the programs you want to install...this is assuming you are knowledgeable in Linux already...also assuming the installation doesn't fail for god knows why (I hate Gentoo, yet I want to love it. Really I do!!)
Not run all the apps I want it to run (MS Money is so helpful, words cannot describe it).
Not work efficiently with my all hardware (historically, not currently)
Allow a user to hack in and do whatever they want whenever they want if my system isn't perfectly patched. (Happened twice in college)
If you are going to be critical, let's be fair about it. Linux is great, it is, but it isn't perfect. There are lots of things that MS does better. For you and me, it is pretty good...for the average user it is a pain in the ass.
Let's not fall into the typical slashdot roll and bash MS because it is MS and prais Linux because it is Linux.
As I stated, I never fully understood the whole thing. I've never done any graphics programming, and have always heard the three terms used interchangable, eventhough I knew on some level that they weren't.
Call me a non-geek (my gf would laugh at you) if you must, but there you have it.:)
This is a bit off topic, but I'm going to ask anyway.
I've never fully understood the difference between OpenGL, Direct3D and DirectX...
If Open GL is the industry standard then what is Direct3D? Is DirectX just the way Windows handles graphics? If so, it works in conjunction with OpenGL and Direct3D?
Can anyone with some knowledge here bring me up to speed?
...is for the corporations themselves to start up "universities". Why go to a 4 year college, when you can be hiried right out of high school and sculpted for your position in 18 - 24 months?
The only difference here is that the name of the college isn't "University of Souther IBM".
No, no option to do that. Luckly it wans't *my* job being outsourced...but other tech positions.
What really sucks is the people being outsourced had to train their replacements. But it was ok because "they would be assigned more important challenging work"... we'll see about that.
I just threw-up all over my keyboard because of that comment. Thanks.
Wow. 3 stories about MS on the main page. A MS ad on the top of the page now...
Amazing. Can we change the tag line from "news for nerds" to "news about MS"?
So in other words...delay the inevitable.
I just read that some airlines are now being paid to put advertisements on the tray tables...what a sick sick world we've become.
Soon, it'll be like in Futurama where our dreams are invaded by ads.

I'm telling you, there are too many shady things going on here. I feel like I have to slip into a dark alley to purchase this stock...
Then it shoud have said "for sale from 6.1m to 5.5m."
-not-
"for sale by 6.1m to 5.5m."
I'm just nit-picking, and it seems to be happening a lot latly.

Just my opinion.
What is going on with the /. editors?

Cabin Fever was one of the funniest movies I've ever seen. It wasn't to be taken seriously you know...
Besides you havn't seen a bad movie until you've seen Mindstorm (aka Project Human Weapon).
You're right. It is the banker's fault for letting the robbers steal money from the vault.
Oh come on! This is funnier than the parent!!!
bah, you people don't know funny from nothin'
