    If you go to a lawyer, I am sure that he will find a way to recover triple that amount through a settlement. The lawyer can organize a number of plaintiffs and perhaps even a class action. The lawyer will front all of the fees, usually.
    Yes, and the lawyer(s) also pockets most of the settlement.

    No, it's like interstate highways; it is THE information super highway after all. So we need to have fund allocated to fix the potholes and a committee to study the longevity of the internet to determine when it needs to have major resurfacing, expansion into new urban area, etc.

    Anyone remember the Commodore Amiga and Atari ST/TT/Mega systems? If only they decided to port AmigaDOS/AmigaOS and TOS/GEM to the Intel platform before Windows became really really popular in the 1990's. That way there would be no OS Fascism and Microsoft would have had a good run for their money.
    Atari lost momentum after Apple sued DRI over the appearance of GEM's 'look and feel' (though probably best remembered for the appearance of it's trash can.) Commodore's M&S despite having product with superior technology to other players could not sell peanuts to elephants.

    Promise unless is in the form of a written contract, isn't worth much. Things must be taken in the context of capability, not intention; for intention could change easily and quickly. Just because Macroshaft promises today that it will not sue, does not preclude the said action in the future, since its patents are enforceable but (non-specific) promise isn't.

    This is an interesting idea. My favorite bits from the later Star Trek series were the times they showed the original enterprise in re-done FX -- the DS9 "tribbles" episode, the "mirror universe" episodes of ENTERPRISE.

    I love the original series as is, but this would be a neat reason to re-watch them.
    But with updated visual for scenes set in space, all other scenes would look horribly dated and inconsistent. Imagine dropping a 2006 Volkswagen Jetta in COLOR in the middle of black and white film "It's a Wonderful Life." Chuckles aside, it's just... wrong.

    Permitting this to continue sets a really bad precedence. Every dictatorial government always have convenient ... secret informants that conveniently produces incriminating evidence on the behalf of the government to demonize and convict undesirables. Affording the defendant to opportunity to face his/her accuser is essential to curb abuses.

    Hear hear! A while back I upgraded the RAM in my girlfriend's Vaio desktop. The thing was so poorly laid-out that it took me a chopstick and a bent coathanger just to get it in! And that was just RAM! I think the motherboard or psu would have been nigh-impossible, but luckily that hasn't come up yet.
    When they said "No User Serviceable Parts Inside," they really REALLY REALLY mean it.

    They can say that all they want, now that the only person who could confirm it is dead. If they really had the goods, they'd be all over the stepson with a lawsuit .
    And you have on good authority that isn't on their to-do list a couple months from now? Perhaps they're just waiting for the whole thing to blow over before pursing the step son? Each time actions RIAA lawyers hit the headline, I lose a bit more faith in the human race.

    Simple:
            * Don't assume customers are criminals
            * Include technology that offers possibilities instead of hinders them.
            * Let hobbyists modify what they buy and you'll get free publicity.

    People want to do what they want to do. When THEY make it hard to do, people work around it. When THEY abuse people with lawsuits and buy themselves laws that criminalizes what people want to do, people move on to something else that doesn't threaten them with lawsuits or jail time.

    This model breaks down when THEY are holding all the cards...

    You presume that the neighbors of Hezbollah has a say in what they have as neighbors. Do you honestly thinks that had they asked Hezbollah to leave the neighborhood, Hezbollah would comply? Would YOU ask a heavily armed neighbor with questionable sanity to move away?

    With Israel bombing convoys on roads, where do you propose these people to evacuate to?

    The whole quota system is inherently flawed. Just like speeding tickets, it's a means of revenue. A means of hassling the average american.
    Quoting a friend in uniform, there is no quote. It's... minimum performance requirement.
