WTF is this guy smoking? He bolted 3 pieces of wood to a piece of cardboard... and this is cool... HOW?
For 3 more pieces of wood and (to be cheep) only 6 more screws, he could have bolted on some supports behind the cardboard to support his delicate and expensive laptop... but maybe the 1/2 inch he'd have to move his desk from the wall was unacceptable.
Although.. I feel with his carpentry talents he could have possibly made a fake wall out of an old fridge box or something to compensate... THAT would have been far more interesting then this crap.
I hate posts that bitch about how/. has gone downhill...hell I don't even mind the dupes... they're great if I miss a story if I'm not near the computer when the original gets posted.
But in the last few months, I've really been considering saying to hell with it. With all the raving fanatics, shitty moderation, and crap stories, this place is reaching the end of my patience level. The people who claim to "speak" for companies by adding all the "we're going to do this" or "we did this because" are really annoying as well. As are the people who reply to posts, including every bit of knowledge they know (googled?) on the subject... just to toot their own horns.
I've submitted a few things to slashdot and got them rejected...altho I know they weren't super WOW factor stuff, I figured they'd be good for a slow news day.
Well after they got rejected I was like "oh well"...but then to see SHIT like this on the front page just is a slap in the face.
Thanks slashdot... for now I've posted a reply even I can't stand.
I'll take the XBox 360 over the diseased monster looking Powermac G5's... or the original imacs... or the ipod.... not meaning to anger the blind apple fans in here, but I think they miss the beat on a tonne of aesthetics.
now the powerbooks tho... some of them are pretty sweet.
I think the reason these consoles don't sit nicely in AV equipment, and stick out (like a sore thumb) is so they can get some more free advertising off you in your house. I mean you go over to someone's house who has a gamecube or an xbox and you spot it right away.
Chances are you don't go into someone's living room and spot the make of their amp from across the room (audiophiles excluded).
Saying this I hate the looks of all the consoles... new and old... and would prefer something that say nicely even on top of my stereo.... doesn't have to be perfect, but a little more tact would be nice.
I've driven real trains (dad's an engineer, I worked on the docks pushing cars into the dumper), and it's pretty easy to crash a train in the right area... run it full speed around a curve.
dunno how good this would work on train sets tho:)
In this world where the media is owned like a pet, and acts accordingly, spreading a message like this becomes near impossible, except maybe to a few people, who end up not giving a shit.
Slashdot doesn't count as most readers already know about the problem.
>> Oh, but now it is revealed that if you hack the game you can see a blocky, pixellated bare boobie. Quick, somebody whip up some righteous indignation and start a fedral investigation!
Here in just a province away in B.C., for about that price ($48+ after tax), I get 1.5Mbps down and 512K up with telus. Or I could choose delta cable (no shaw in my town... probably the only non shaw area) and get roughly the same speeds with a 10 gig/month cap (STRICTLY enforced... you go over, you pay... and it's not cheap).
Telus gives me 2 ips, so I chose them (besides, they don't seem to care how much I download. A few years back however, I got 4Gbps for the same price.
Oh these topics are great for bringing out the cult-like fanboys.
Stuff on Macs vs. PCs is great for it too.
Why do people take it as an attack if you choose a different console then them. I mean for chrissakes... I'd rather have my choice of 3 or more consoles, then have to pick a winner. different people like different things.. but they don't like other people to like different things.
Hell if you want to like the xbox, or osx, or the psp... why give a fuck if someone else doesn't? I actually MISS the days of more choice for computers and consoles... it was always neat trying to figure out the workings of a new system.
Maybe you should take some of those lovely pills the doctor prescribed for you.
Calling me a socialist, now that's a laugh, and shows your ignorance oh-so-clearly.
Keep hiding, little one.. some day maybe you'll grow up enough to be able to have a conversation as an adult without going on a rany, foaming at the mouth, yet too scared to actually use a NICKNAME.
"mommy... an anonymous coward called me an idiot!"
they didn't want more money, in fact they would even agree to a slight rollback. They just wanted their JOBS.
The company was the ones stopping people from watching the movies because they wanted more money... they forced the strike, it was either that or just empty their lockers and go home.
The projectionists did their job, and did it well.. it wasn't the ol' "4 guys with shovels... 3 of them watching the other guy work."
Now unions have their problems, I agree... but workers do need to stick together or the companies will just walk all over them. Companies abuse their positions of power far more often then unions do.
As for them being paid well... well there's tonnes of jobs out there where they will pay you nothing, let you break your back working for them, and fire you in a second. hell instead of thinking they should be paid less, we should be think that the minimum wage is bloody ridiculous. They should raise it to like $15.00 or so, so that people can earn a decent living.
Of course, greed would kick in again, and inflation would drive everything up.
some guys making a few bucks an hour extra is really a small problem. The real issues is why we let these greedy sick bastards make more money then they can ever use in their lifetime, but continue to suck in more, at the expense of anyone and everything in their way.
i've said it before, I'll say it again, capitalism needs to be reigned in, and i guess we'd also have to force morality into the system.
I hate to reply to myself, but figured I'd add that when the movie theatres did this to the projectionists, they were already making incredible ammounts of money... this wasn't a neccesity due to poor returns... it was pure SICK GREED.
If we pay the movie star less, where does the rest go? To the producer? Director? Company? They're not going to do something nice, and responsible and maybe make it so joe sixpack and his family can go see a movie without being gouged.
Personally, I think a lot of those people should be paid less, and let the money trickle down more to the lowest paid. if they're making sufficient funds, then they can maybe do things like make it so I don't have to spend $50 or so to go see a movie with my girl.
This is what gets me with movie stars, singers, HOCKEY PLAYERS... sure they thank their fans.. say they owe it all to them... yet their hands are in our wallets every chance they get.
Out here in Vancouver, Canada, they did some awful things to the projectionists... rolling back wages, lessening the staff... etc. They ended up striking. Now projectionists made GOOD money, so I met a lot of people who thought they were overpaid anyways, so they should just take what they could get... they figured it was such an easy job they shouldn't be paid what they were.
i find this way of thinking to be very similar to brainwashing. Instead of wishing the poor projectionist and his family to be paid less, they should be wishing themselves to be PAID MORE. Why do people always have to drag others down, instead of trying to boost themselves up?
I asked them where the money should go if they succeeded in doing this to the projectists. Back to Sony and their ilk so they can have yet another dump truck full of money sitting around collecting interest?
I'd much rather my money went to some poor joe sixpack with a wife and kids busting his ass to support them, then to some already stinking rich guy.
I honestly believe that with as much cash/marketshare microsoft/windows has, apple would be the ones willing to try to be more like microsoft, if it would work for them.
Too bad we don't have a "what if" machine. i'd put money on apple turning into microsoft if given half the chance. heh... imagine that... Microsoft with an egomaniac like Steve Jobs as head. No Billy don't come close to S.J. when it comes to arogance.
I know this will piss off the disproportionately high ratio of mac zealots around here, but I'm afraid apple's not your friend, and Jobsy won't come to your birthday party... with or without clown.
no, it ran on standard pc hardware... the problem was that the list of standard components was just too small. be really needed better video support.
funny thing is now it does, albeit without 3D support... beos is still being worked on by some, and not runs on a lot of both newer, and older systems.
alas... it's too late. I still have a box with beos on it, but I use it less and less. If they'd improve the firefox port, I might be inclined to use it more, but on a 500MHz P3, with 512MB ram, it's just BONE* SLOW.
I miss the old days when fully functional new OS's weren't that uncommon.. where whole new platforms weren't that uncommon.
a little harsh for someone that's been bucking for linux don't you think? Maybe take a few of these pink pills.
While desktop linux might not be a good solution for some people, it works great for many others, and has come an EXTREMELY long way in 10 years. You can get your desktop to look a variety of ways, some of them quite pretty, if you take the time to do it, some of them do so out of the box (fedora don't look half bad... what the hell is with ubuntu?)
Fonts half greatly improved with sub-pixel rendering, and yeah, you might have to find/install a few of them yourself.
If you really want to talk about desktops that suck out of the box... explain windows xp?
Every OS has buggy desktop apps... get over it. Linux might have more simply because it's geared towards coding, with the tools installed most of the time so more people will give it a try (Visual Studio is ridiculously priced) There however is still all the apps the *average* user might need, altho hardcore graphics/audio guys might find it lacking.
Sure, what I have said here might require some work, but that don't mean you won't end up with a nice, fully functional OS.
You sound like someone who has probably not used Linux very much, but just keeps hearing about it and thinking "someday.."
A lot of windows and even osx features are rehashed versions of old ideas too. I do think Linux has room for improvement, but you sir, are just another troll.. and make me feel dirty by defending linux to one.
I was (am) a little pissed off at the naming conventions of nvidia (and ati to a lesser extent). As a secondary card, on a whim i bought a geforce fx 5600xt, and I know I probably should have researched it, but it was right when they came out.
The damn thing is a lot slower then my gf4 ti 4200 8x, and it cost about $30 more (before tax)! Nowadays it's just a spare ready to swap in if my main card (9800 pro) fails.
As I said, I bought it without researching it, and I guess my thoughts were on the fact that aTI's top cards had the XT designation.
To tell you the truth, if I was going to buy a mid range card by nvidia now I still wouldn't know which piece was the best bang for the buck, whereas ATI's I would know.
Hey wait, wasn't this thread about the xbox 360?
Here's my thoughts:
stupid name. ugly design (from what I've seen).
I think microsoft will make it a lOT harder to mod, in which case it will be useless to me, i wouldn't have a current generation xbox if it wasn't for XBox media center.
I think this is part of the reason they're going away from the x86 ancestry of the original xbox... to try and make it harder for anyone other then MS to have control over it.
Also, it will be a lot harder to do homebrew development for, as the XDK is now tied to a MS hardware product... can't just install visual studio and the new xdk on your current PC.
If I can't do what i want with my hardware, i have no use for it.
>> If you don't want an iPod don't buy one!. If you want the ability to buy music from a wide variety of music stores, then go with the cheaper models with smaller drives.
can you add a little more bias to that somehow? Can't handle the fact that some of the non-apple models could be cheaper without somehow being inferior?
Now granted, the ipod is a nice little unit, but it's the marketing that made them so popular, more then just because they're so much nicer then the rest.
How about all you apple fanboys replace the word "Apple" with "Microsoft" and make it the Windows Music Store... I bet you'd all change your tune.
I agree with her, I don't want to buy music from just one place, I want options, damnit. I also want to be able to use whatever music device I want, with whatever tune I downloaded... and I don't think it's asking too much. I'd also like to use whatever OS I want, which includes *BSD and Linux... oh no looks like your precious iTMS is inferior in this respect.
It's funny how fast people will change their tune if it's from a chic company they like.
Now if you'll excuse me... I must go shower in scathing hot water... agreeing with hillary rosen as made my skin crawl.
I was talking about 3 pieces vertically, long enough to attach the actual wood of the desk at the top and bottom... yes I saw his little brace.

I remember hearing about deaths at west edmonton mall.
I lived there for awhile, never went to west ed mall tho.
Unfortunately this is not nearly enough.

Maybe if he'd shut up and let the installer do his work it would have taken less time.
