    The Xbox brought lots of innovative new features to the table, if Microsoft can continue to come up with interesting stuff they will likely have the most compelling system.

    Hardware doesn't make a game system, games does.

    Microsoft lack good 1 and 2 party companies that do exclusive XBox titles, I don't expect this to happen.

    There been a bit of focus as linux as a do-it-all-directly-from-the-box kinda OS, and that all good. BUT, remember that a lot of people are using linux for quite different reasons.

    I personally don't have one piece of software installed that i don't use/need(ok, maybe one...), I like that i can install a server without a browser and a window manager. Flexibility and freedom, thats why I like OS.

    I don't need to keep any silly lib or app installed that i don't use, and this is the real strength of Open Source in my opinion, your free to customize your system to what it actually does. Lets not forget that here in these Years-Of-The-Bloaty-Distros :)

    The idea is that the company distributes the torrent have set up a seeder. This way, if nobody besides your are downloading, you'll still get good download rates because you are the only one accessing the primary seeder. If the primary seeder gets overloaded, it wont matter much since your btclient will download from one of the many other client downloading the file.

    Think of this as a peer2peer accelerated download server, not a peer2peer network.

    This scalability is the primary reason that mandrake and blizzard is using BT, chances are this why fedora is using it too.

    ..should rush out and buy this game and then send a mail to one of these people, letting them know that the fact that the game ran on Linux was one of the factors that made you deside to buy the game.

    Bacially, thank them for their support of your favorite platform. And let them know you are always looking for quality game titles running linux to buy.

    That won't hurt the chances of future ATARI distributed games being ported to Linux.

    If you're going emerge precompiled binaries, what's the point in using Gentoo? Why not use a system that has a pretty frigging great packaging system.

    Apperently quite a few people think emerge is a frigging great packaging system ;p

    Seems to me, THE reason to use Gentoo is to build everything from source so it is optimized for your system.

    I personally agree with you, my entire system (expect my nvidia drivers :[) is has been built and optimized as i want(note: USE is great great great, everybody should welcome our use variable overlords).

    But from the looks of #gentoo (on freenode) more and more gentoo newcomers(+people who want gentoo for the easy app installation and great user community, but dont want to boughter with compiling everything) is using it.

    I installed debian with a full kit of KDE in under an hour on an iMac 400. You're saying there's some new hardware that can build that equivalent with gentoo within 60 minutes?

    Just tell emerge to use precompiled binaries instead of compiling everything from source, if that's not your thing ;)

    I'm not a native english speaker(i'm danish). For me to write flawless English text requires more work than i generally like to put into a slashdot post. But chances are you got that "mangage" was supposed to be manage anyways, right? And yes.. I made a mistake on those dollar signs, but hey, isn't there a few typos in your own post also? I was under the impression that "to day" and today has different Semantic. Ooh well.

    Wake up, perhaps stop being so reactionist and understand that while Linux is fantastic for developers who know what they're doing, it's entirely unsuitable for the average PC or Mac user who just wants a computer that's there when they turn it on, is responsive, has a good range of easilly available software that they can pop down the shops and buy, doesn't crash too often and lets them generally do things in the way that they've been doing them for the past 10 years. hat is what Windows gives. "*wail* but it doesn't do it for freeeee and I can't rip off their source code to make my life easier :( :(" - there is no such thing as a free lunch. Even at McDonalds.

    And about that "and I can't rip off their source code to make my life easier" comment. I can only talk for the coders i know, most are CS or Math students I've met at TUOD (Technical Uni of Denmark where i also study). Nobody uses OS as a plain function lib to cut and paste from. People uses it to check if they have made something correct/optimal, like the answers in the back of your mathbooks. They are not there for you to copy, there are there for you to learn from. I know commercial minds have a hardtime understanding this, but just run with it ok? :p

    Anyone running Linux and reading /. is already biased towards Linux and is undoubtedly also a nerd/geek/whatever who knows how Linux works, what pitfalls lie in wait, how to compile stuff, and all that general administration crazyness (tech terms). They have no base understanding that Linux is much too confusing for the typical man in the street to use, has no phone number you can call when it explodes (how does one post on newsgroups in search of snide and patronising "support" comments about how much of a dork one is for not fscking one's /dev/hda1 when the computer just blew up?), and does not at all help users to migrate from Windows to Linux.

    And the sun is bright, whats your point(in reference to my post)? Are you just letting out steam now or ?

    Windows used to have help for Mac users new to Windows. If Linux wanted to do this then certain little problems would start peeping out like "where the hell are all the shortcut keys and why are they not standardized?" and "why is this GUI so damn slow on a P400 with 128mb ram?". Linux is great, it's just a shame that all the software written to run on the Linux kernel is either a port of some handy old *BSD console app or a GTK+ based project that is still pre-bloody-1.0.0 and only really 80% complete.     1. Linux is the equivalent of a diet coke in the complete meal that is offered by Microsoft.

    2. Free software is more expensive than software with a price tag. (New MS R&D shows 0.99$ > 2.99$. Oh well :D)

    3. To make a modular design, without making the system almost impossible for (professional) sysadmins to mangage, is apperently a very hard problem.

    4. Linux has a bit of traction because of the lack of a integrated firewall in windows(in related news...)

    5. Almost all people reading the open sourced code, doesn't really understand it. On a global scale, probertly no more of 100 can actually code.

    6. Closed R&D work is more likely to still be around in 10 years time(ROFL, a lot :D).

    note to self.. never visit CRN again :D

    I know of nobody who has a xeon in a home pc meant for games. This chip is not being marketed in that segment nor will it be priced to compete there. It _will_ affect their Itanium sales.

    Just to be clear, I never said that I thought the extended Xeons would target games. I think they will target graphical workstations(for solidworks, SI etc).

    If you think that the new extended 64bit xeons will take Itanium2 place as their 64bit server product, well ok. That's your view on things, personally i dont think thats the case.

    I think they target home desktop/pro workstations with IA32e and the server marked with Itanium2.

    Intel is placing the extensions in it's xeon chipsets. That means that they _are_ canablizing their "pure" 64bit processor with their 32/64bit hybrid.

    So, which chip is most likely to be branded by intel as they're "professional workstation" platform?

    This still doesn't change the fact that almost all the big movers of iron (IBM, HP, Dell etc) supports IA64, all the big commercial DBs support it. AFAIK, Sun is the only biggie who supports AMD65. Meaning, Intel they don't feel AMDs breath in their necks here.

    Which cant be said about the home/desktop(+graphical workstations?), which is why i think this is a perfectly rational move by Intel.

    Plenty of Itanium 2's not one single AMD64 based system. Why? dunno, all the big guns seem to use IA-64 and PowerPC platforms.

    *begin-sarcasm* Well clearly IBM, HP, Dell etc have all lost their minds. Tom's hardware reports that AMD64FX gets far better FPS in Quake than ANY Intel based system. And they're even cheaper.*end-sarcasm*

    They simply target different markets, and I guess Intel figured that x86-64 will become a imporant factor in the desktop/multimedia area. And its these consumers that IA32e targets, so making the instructionsets compatible doesn't really seem like such a bad idea to me.

    And, they still VERY committed to IA64. Which will remain their platform for professional 64bit computing.

    Why you feel that it makes Intel look bad that they are supporting AMDs platform in a platform aimed at gaming/mm/desktop usage(while having a pure 64bit instructionset for their workstation/server processors), I'll never understand ;)

    Well.. i haven't really been that involved with the CG world ever since i left that job(im back in school to do a M.Sc in Applied Math atm).

    To answer your post, I dont really get what it is you are trying to tell me... I argued that scripting was not for A-R-T-I-S-T-S.. and you start telling me about various CS/Math types and how important their scripting can be.. Yes, im aware that scripting is widely used in the industry. But the people making the scripts, are not artist. They're science types, not artistic types.

    Eighter by animating the stuff "basic" animation tools, like keyframers and such.

    If the wanted animation was really complicated and scripting was required, he would probertly include the department programmer(who's job bacially is to write shaders and scripts for the artists) in the project.

    An interesting piece of conference buzz was the entire development team of Newtek/Lightwave defecting and founding their own company with a flagship 3D Subsurf modeler called 'modo'. It sports an interface arguably influenced by Blender and advertised as the hottest GUI-thing since sliced bread

    Influenced by Blender?? Influenced by blender??(Love , apperntly, really DO make people blind :)

    Seriously, You got to be kidding me. The layouts on those screenshots are ALL ligtwave inspired baby(with different icons to mimic lightwave, Max and Maya looks if im not mistaken). The fact that blender TRIES to be ligthwave'ish in its design might have been the point of confusion here. But even though Blender tries to mimic LW, its still not 10^-3 the 3D app lightwave is.

    Main differences? Lightwave have allways been created to be as simple/intuitive as possible, because they target artist. Not techtypes.
    I think the blender teams definition of a artist is pretty is pretty clear if you look over the the Blender confrence schedule, especially this one stands out:

    I know a few professional artists, primarily from a job i had at Denmarks national TV channel DR(Who had a bunch of hardcore Pixelwizards, to make special effect etc). I think its safe to say that none of them have scriptet a darn thing in their life, heck.. the most talented FX guy there had his SGI workstation start Softimage automatically because he is so afraid of the desktop. To us geeks this is hard to understand, but the guy was a artist. Not a computer buff, he saw the computer as a tool to assist him in producing art. And there was'nt really anything he could'nt draw/model/create with a computer (or with a simple pencil for that matter), but belive me, he wound'nt be able(nor interested) to script ANYTHING.

    I've tried lobbying Blender to a few of these guys and lets just say, i haven't gotten all that positive feedback. One described it as "a dated lightwave with a post-apocalypse interface". I actually found that pretty funny :D

    So.. now its world of warcraft that going to be the game that changes EVERYTHING in the MMORPG scene. Now.. is it just me or was'nt that what everybody said about SWG?

    Face it MMORPGs suck big time, and probertly allways will because of the nature of the game industry.

    Im a huge fan og RPG games. I've played them to great extent both on computers, pen&paper and in live roleplay scenarios here in little ol' Denmark. The latter is undoubtedly the funnest.

    The most boring form of RPG games? MMORPGs hands down... looking at static on a tv screen is more involving that playing MMORPGs. They're pure evil..

    Conclusion? Unless repeating the very same act again and again((and again)^9535493) is your definition of fun. You should defently not go anyway near a mmorpg.

    eeehr.. what creatine where they using?

    I've ate a bunch of them, so did a few of my close friends (one still does). None of us have any of the SE ur talking about.

    I can't belive that creatine will effect you bone structure(enlarged forheads), to my knowledge not even steroids do this. You need really really strong hormones for this job (there isnt any hormones in creatin at all), stuff like the hormones that you give to dwarfs to make them grow a bit. This is a really popular drug with the juicers, and will make your forhead bigger. Look at arnold, he popped them tings like crazy.

    It sounds like the people you are talking about, are'nt being all that thrustworthy when they say their only doing creatin.

    Also note, creatin has been used on aids patients for a looong time. None of them are getting large forheads and/or loosing all their hair. If this was a side effect, it would have gotten noticed by now.

    When I worked out (stopped when I went back to school to finish up my degree) i ate a bunch of these. I cant say if i had any noticably change, since i was'nt paying attention to it. But, funnily enough this was the period i decided to go back to school.

    Actually, any company that would toss a resume because it didn't list college experience isn't a place I'd want to work anyway- not sour grapes; it shows a fundemtally flawed methodology that probably permeates the entire organization, and it would be better not to be there, in my opinion.

    Im not sure how it works in the states, but here in Europe it seem to be the exact other way around. Meaning, the places that would be really neat to work at all requires hefty diplomas.

    A couple of examples from where i live (Denmark):

    Risà National Laboratory
    Does all kind of research, including a lot of seriously wicked CS related stuff. Want to work there? Get a M.Sc or a PhD, or preferably you thesis there then get hired when your done with it =)

    Only real video game creator here in little old Denmark(makers of the Hitman games), very neat programming jobs available there.. If you have a BSc or preferably a MSc. They make it pretty clear they could care less if your a programming wiz(try mailing them) or not.. They are after math/physics wizs, the programming is certainly the easy part of the work their coders do.

    Most of the jobs not in the support, network-admin, consultant/programmer(doing web pages and various office related in house apps) seem to require them damn diplomas around here.
