You teach a physics class, so maybe you can answer a question I have about this.
From what I know, the Coriolis effect is an imaginary force, a relativistic force that doesn't actually directly affect things, only observations of things. How, if this is true, can the Coriolis effect come into play in this situation?
Forgive me if I'm completely ignorant, my frame of reference comes from the debunking of the old 'water circles the drain in an opposite direction as the opposing hemisphere' myth.
...is how much more environmentally damaging *creating* the batteries is. According to this, and this, the damage caused is greater than that of a Hummer.
How this could happen is pretty simple, really. While internal combustion is inherently polluting, it's been one of the most developed products for the last one hundred years, and so the production processes are super streamlined. Battery and hybrid technology is new, and so it has a few kinks still to be worked out.
People need to be careful about jumping on this 'green' bandwagon without thinking, because there's a lot of stuff out there designed to take advantage of the near-maniacal devotion to curbing our carbon emissions, even though there's no way to conclusively prove that our output (which is 3% of total output, rotting vegetation contributing to the vast, vast majority) is actually doing anything at all.
Believe what you will, but please do investigate both sides of the matter first, and remember that it's not what you drive, it's HOW you drive.
If he vacuum sealed it with packages of dessicant where the battery would be (removed because it would never last 25 years), I imagine it might do fairly well. Just make sure it's damn well sealed, or you might wind up with something along the lines of this.
I believe he means 'quad shielded', not quad flooded.
You can also pick up RG59 solid conductor, if it's quad-shielded, for runs up to 50 m or so. Anything above that, and it's RG6, from 50 m to 100 m. From 100 m to 300 m, RG11 will be needed. These distances are out of spec for most cable companies, but they will work in a pinch.
If you do run it along the outside of the building, make sure it's the flesh-coloured kind, which is designed to blend in with most light-coloured buildings.
Unfortunately, I'm in Southern Ontario, which is nestled snugly between New York State and Michigan - hell and gone from the left coast.
Sorry to hear about the screening, that's a bummer man. Someone should put together a travelling roadshow for 70mm movies, so everyone in the Americas can see what a difference it makes.
Makes me wish I lived in or around LA, so I could go see 70mm prints of great old movies. Unfortunately I live in Canada, where things like that just don't happen.
If I were Nolan, the next one would be shot in Ultra-Panavision 70 mm, hands-down the best-looking format ever created. A huge negative, plus it's anamorphic!
That's true, he did get some shots in 65, which was great, but it was too bad about the rest of the movie. Sigh. Looks like John Smith wasn't the only one capable of screwing up hot Native American ass.
Thanks for the link - I didn't know they had an online presence... For shame!
True, but they didn't do only the process shots oin IMAX - they shot entire scenes with no visual effects in them using it, just because everything looks better in IMAX. There's a great article in this month's American Cinematographer with Pfister and Nolan talking about why they chose to use it, and how it panned out.
Actually, what's interesting is that only two years ago, Terence Malick tried to film THE NEW WORLD in 65 mm, which would actually be a step down from IMAX, but the studio stepped in and shut that idea down pretty quickly, considering the costs. Seems like Nolan can sell some snake oil better than Malick!
...but only about 25 - 30% of the film was shot in IMAX, at four times the cost of regular the anamorphic process used for the rest of the film.

It is the showiest performance of the year, and possibly the showiest going back years, but the fact remains that it is based on frankly adolescent material, and that fact alone will hinder it out of the gate. He's playing a clown, for Chrissakes. Regardless, stranger things have happened.

No, I think you read it wrong - It's not Academy Award level because it just ain't. Not for any other reason than that, though politics seem to play a larger part in the awards process nowadays, so, who knows...
Tiny Lister had a great role in that scene, convincing the warden (or whomever he was) to give him the detonator. What great writing.

Don't get me wrong, he's good - very good - but it's not Academy Award level acting. If he had lived, nobody would be discussing an award.
Certainly, it will get nominations for cinematography for Pfister (who will win), writing for the brothers Nolan, and production design for Crowley (who will also win), but that's it.
If the Academy chose to recognise the efforts of the only people who actually knowingly risk their lives for film, stunt people, then this would win as well. But, the Academy is blind to this irony, so they won't.

Hrmm... You appear to be correct - although I did read the article, I missed the 'evening' qualifier. ...Slowly backs out of room, hat in hand...
