Here, here!
With 4.5 billion in the bank, a 98-100% share of the handheld mrket, Nintendo is going well.
I've found Nintendo gamers are smart gamers. Of all the people I know who play games, the more enlighted have a 'cube. Of all the people I've introduced to console gaming, most have been addicted to a GameCube game over one on another system (save GTA).
For example, my flatmate is addicted to Eternal Darkness at the moment. He's playing until 2, maybe even 3 in the morning. Even when he was addicted to GTA, he put down the controller at midnight. It's games like this that make a Nintendo Console. The other platforms have some great games, but few of them are quirky and different (look at the number of GTA rip offs).
I'm not trying to troll here, I'm just making an observation, but this announcement seems a little boring compared to Nintendo's, excluding the PSP, of course.
Maybe if there was a new FF anouncement, or if Enix had decided where to put the next Dragon Quest, we'd be talking, but this is "meh".
Or just how much money Nintendo is making. At the press conference it was revealed that GameCube and GBA combined hold 60% of the hardware market, with the GameCube having a sell through of 1.3 millions consoles more than the Xbox.
Nintendo is making money on the GameCube, unlike Microsoft with the Xbox. Plus they have 5 billion dollars in the bank at last check, so they're set to go under, it won't be for a very long time.
One thing people tend to overlook, is the fact that Nintendo isn't losing money. They're gettin glower than expected profits, which is sending their share price down, but they're profits all the same.
Nintendo isn't going away, they're a strong company with a monopoly grasp on the handheld market.
Due to your somewhat unique insight, what would your opinion on a Nintendo-Sega merger be, should it ever come about? I know both companies have warmed to each other with projects such as the Tri Force arcade board and F-Zero GC/AC, and in my opinion would make a great combined company.
From my observations, Sega and Nintendo share a very large, overlapping fanbase, which could make for great oppertunities, where it united.
I am under the impression that each is a very different company internally, but they do seem to aspire to a common goal, which is ground breaking game making. Could a company imploying Yu Suzuki, Yuji Naka and Shigeru Miyamoto work in your opinion?
I am of the opinion that the best company Sega could ever merge with would be Nintendo.
Think about it. They have similar values, they're both soley games companies, they both have superb development houses, they've been teaming up on things such as the TriForce arcade board, F-Zero GC/AC and the like, and neither of them are afraid of trying new gaming genres out.
Plus, imagine a company that imployed Yu Suzuki,Yuji Naka AND Shigeru Miyamoto. The thought just makes me giddy. It'd give Nintendo one hell of a boost too. With Shenmue, Sonic, Mario, Zelda and Sega Sports titles being GameCube exclusive.
My Dreamcast stays warm for several reasons: Ikaruga and Rez being the main ones. Playing Rez on the PS2 doesn't feel right, it feels like an empty shell.
Further to this, what gives the Recording Industry Association of America the right to delete files on my PC, when I'm not an American or in America?
Do they assume that because a court case is won/loss in the US, that it applies to all countries there after?
Futhermore, DoSing a foreigner could be esculated into an international incident. It is, after all, an attack by a group in one country where the government in that country refuses to do anything about it. Which pretty much lends to the conclusion that it's state endorsed.
Actually, this is referring to the yet-to-be-actually-announced GameCube LAN gaimg system that Nintendo is working on.
No, I'm serious, there's going to be several first party games that allow for LAN gaming with the cube's BBA (Broadband adapter) in the next few months.
And as we all know, LAN gaming + some sneaky routing = internet play : ) Mario Kart online baby!
The site proclaims these machines to be small enough to fly inside. . . . wouldn't that be the most dangerous toy ever? It'd be like a tiny flying lawn mower!
"Battle.net is a value add service, you want it? you use theirs, real simple".
No thanks, I'll use my own and not bother with their's. That way, I can make the server run the way I want it to, not be reliant on my ISP, or their service, and keep all of the stats on the server, because that's the way I want to run it.
I'm not hurting anyone and I'm not breaking the law (in my country at least).
"It just doesn't make sense that the majority of bnetd users would be legitimate war3 CD owners. Why would you play on a small server instead of battle.net? The argument about lousy battle.net performance simply doesn't hold water these days."
We run a bnetd server after hours here at work. You get to have a localised Starcraft ladder league, not use company internet bandwidth and boast to your fellow collegues about just how far behind they. It's great fun, and just so you know, we ALL own Starcraft & Broodwar.
There will be some people out there who pirate games, and they always will. But bnetd did not hurt Blizzard in our case, in fact, it encouraged people here to buy SC/BW.
Gameplay is king. Super Mario Bros. 3 is on the NES, and it's, by far, one of the best games of all time.
I'll definately be giving this a try, as I have 2 broken NES consoles and a craving to play the games the way they were intended - with a brick-like controller.
In the sunny suburb of Miramar, no less. I just wish Peter Jackson would do something similar here in Wellington, I'd sign up in a second (and then, no doubt, be turned away in a similar time frame).
You think you had it hard? Look here sonny, in my day we didn't even have your fancy "buses", never mind having to chase 'em and clinge to barbed wire.
In my day, we had to crawl to and from class, barefoot and glove-less, over pits of rusty blades, broken glass and hot coals. Took a good 17 hours to get to class and by jiminy, we got it if we were late.
Buses with internal combustion engines! The mere thought of such contraptions makes today's youth soft.
"True Simpson's fans pray everyday that the show gets cancelled immediatly."
And bring back Futurama in a good time slot. Simpsons is good, but it's lost it recently, while futurama has some moments just as funny, or even funnier than the Simpsons.
"And the winner is" "THE HIPNO-TOAD" "ALL GLORY TO THE HIPNO-TOAD"
I'm quite a Nintendo fan, myself and I have to say that serious competition in the portable is something I've been hoping for, for quite a while now. Yes the GBA is a great system, but it could be a whole lot better (don't start with the screen brightness debate, I'm sick of it).
Nokia, however, will not offer competition to Nintendo. The N-Gage is likely, based on other Nokia phones with Bluetooth et al, to cost in excess of $450. Why would any gamer, hardcore, hobbiest or casual, drop that much cash on a device that looks to only have a few developer's support, when dropping $200-$300 will get them a GBA(SP) AND a very good phone?
And on the subject of networked, handheld gaming; Nintendo has a cellphone gaming network in Japan, if they really saw it as a viable way to make money, they would have introduced it to the US, but since the US cellphone market is in such a fragmented condition, they're probably going to avoid such networks outside Japan for the forseeable future.
Well, as an Autralian citizen, I must say I'm very disappointed. I'll complain to my local MP straight away.
As a New Zealander, I suppose I should say; "HA! That'll learn ya for kissing America's arse. Go shag a dingo".
As a freedom loving geek, on the other hand, I must say that having something this scary possibly going down so close to home sends shivers down my spine. Especially considering that New Zealand and Australia are basically considered a single market in terms of media releases.
Upside to being in New Zealand, however, is zone-less DVDs are not at all illegal, due to our fantastic parallel importing laws.
Come and live in New Zealand, it's cheaps and we own all your brewies anyway ; )

Yeah, yeah, I know : )
Just thought I'd point out some geek-ish sports many would not be familiar with. I probably should have a taken a lighter tone with my reply, but oh well...

You can't take the booth babes home, what's the swag at E3 like this year? it way fairly lapse in 2001. Picked up any cool, free stuff?

There's a really good breakdown of the presentation over at PGC

Makes sense to me.

Dark green? What are you? Some kind of XBox Fanboy?
</sarcasm>
. . . . In all seriousness though, this section is going to be to gaming what the slash front page is to operating systems, the home of flamewars.
Should be fun : )
The site proclaims these machines to be small enough to fly inside. . . . wouldn't that be the most dangerous toy ever? It'd be like a tiny flying lawn mower!
Enough! It's not getting any funnier! Now you're just looking desperate and sad.

If all else fails, I'll just have to boot that Windows partition I haven't used in 6 months.
I'll definately be giving this a try, as I have 2 broken NES consoles and a craving to play the games the way they were intended - with a brick-like controller.
You'll want one of these then.

You actually like VB? OK then. Yes, if you moved to Kiwiland you would have no problems in your continued self punishment. We have plenty of VB ; )
