Ah, but the guy who designed the original XBox also created one of the worst games ever, Trespasser. So what can you expect. (even if he isn't on the team anymore)
I logged onto slashdot to point out the exact same thing, but realized they can continue to use many off the shelf parts such as hard drives, usb, and different subcomponents.
I'm just curious how they intend to keep the price point the same, how they plan to treat past owners of the XBox, and what, if any, is the upgrade path.
Sun's NFS is only faster if you're dealing entirely with other Sun boxes, but I've only tested it on Sparc. I would actually put money on Linux for that. Or, you could look at NetAPP if you want real speed.
Have you maintained an x86/sparc environment? It's a pain in the ass. You have to do many things differently anyway, so why bother. Besides, the Blade 100's are only a thousand bucks so they are not that much to the 24k-48k you pay for the low end 280R's and such.
And if it's a utility machine, you can look at the netra x-1's, which are quite nice.
I've just seen too many people put up farms of x86 machines, brag about how they are running solaris, and spend all day trying to fight the fires with it. The TCO just doesn't make sense just so you can say 'We're running Solaris!'
It's more management's fault, not necessarily the people under them.
Who bothers to use Solaris on x86? Oh yeah, idiots who don't understand the 'right tool for the job' philosophy.
Go with OpenBSD or Linux on x86. If you want to run Solaris correctly, get some ultrasparcs already. You always lose something when you skimp on your infrastructure to save a few bucks.
I wish there would be default stack protection, right out of the kernel. I'm tired of these repeated buffer overflows, and I know people can code right around them even with stack protection, but at least an attempt to make it harder for stack busting would be nice.
I have used a couple different headhunters, but most of them have not performed very well. Most don't really match the people and the jobs together well.
However, I did like the Pencom guys back in the day, and an ex-pencom guy did find me my current job. Course, I was also a CT person but not anymore. I can say that a guy nicknamed Chilly was a good recruiter, but he's no longer one anymore.
However, I can't say anything about the companies now, but I'm sure others can. I do get a lot of recruiter email because I pop up on search engines with 'SAN', 'EMC', 'Veritas' and other popular search terms, but I'm never interested in them. But it's nice to give the emails to those who are looking for jobs. `8r)
I think the product is named the SX6000 because it sucks. `8r/
I have one and I've tried several different configurations with it. However, I have been remarkably unhappy with it. First, it's a full-length card, I sure wish I had noticed that before I purchased it. Next, it's rather expensive, but does provide an onboard clock chip for RAID 5. The RAID 5 works reasonably well, and I'm sure I could pull a disk for a short time, but I wouldn't trust it for a long period of time. It was fine until...
If you have an issue, you're screwed. I had a drive lose some sectors, and everytime it would hick-up on those sectors, it would hardfreeze the box. When I changed it to not halt on error, it would just start beeping everytime it hit those sectors. but Win2k wouldn't mark those sectors as bad, because they weren't contiguous. Oh, and there are no tools on the Promise site to fix this particular problem. I just don't want to yank the disk because I'm afraid I'll lose everything else while I wait for the drive to come back.
Another thing is the lack of support. The website is pathetic. I tried to get debian installed, it didn't go so well. The driver they distribute is very badly written. It took me around 2 months to get it recompiled correctly, and even then, the sector errors freeze it (even with halt on error off).
All in all, I will never spend 300 dollars on a crappy IDE RAID controller and instead spend the money on RAID 1 something. Then I have full protection and can pull a single drive without worrying.
As soon as my full backup of the box is complete (another day or so to verify everything), I'm going to be yanking the card and reconfiguring. and not buying the high-end IDE controllers again... I wonder if serial ATA would be better.
I had a botnet using my irc server as their jumping off point. I wasn't too happy with it cause I saw an attack happen. So I went through and removed them all. I wrote up the story here if anyone wants to know how to take down a subseven network.
Oh, I didn't say piracy was right, wrong, or a bad first date, but I did want to point out that win2k exploits happen all the time, but not always in a very clear way. Hence, some hacks might not be noticed, in this case, for six hours.
It should also be pointed out that I have not purchased a major company CD for the past year and a half, and only attended the geek required movies for that time period as well. But my Tivo supports my movie habit and there are a lot of good DJs that put out independant work.
Except when they are exploited, they might not be noticed for awhile. I've noticed one site getting hit for awhile now.
As we speak, someone is changing the news options on the RIAA website. However, they don't seem to be stopping them from doing it. I did grab a shot of a particularly amusing one though.
I spent a week and a half in England, mostly to study different aspects of Alan Turing. I ended up going to Bletchley Park, where the Enigma code was broken. (And was the only American there.) I also went some very cool museums and saw some physics landmarks, it was a fun time. `8r)
Find something/person you're interested in and do some research on them. Then maybe visit their old stomping grounds. There's a lot of interesting things in the world.
If anyone else has interest in World War 2 and cryptography, take a trip to London and take the train an hour out to Bletchley Park for the day. It was well worth it for me. VERY cool stuff. `8r) (Oh, and don't point out you're american to the tour guide, or all he'll talk about how great those american chaps are. heh)
I like playing Go, and i think he's dead on about when people ask how you're doing. Unless you are playing in the game, it's very hard to see who's going to win till mid-game. In fact, you need to sit down and watch a bit before you can make that determination as well.
I just wish the Yahoo games version of Go wasn't so badly done with scoring. `8r/ The idea of 'taking pieces' is what most americans assume, and so it makes for very poor games. `8r/
There's going to be an extra scene included in the DVD release of EMPIRE
STRIKES BACK coming up next year! Basically, it expands on the scene
where Vader reveals his fatherhood to Luke, and ties up some loose ends
created with the release of Episode 1.
INT: BESPIN GANTRY - MOMENTS LATER:
A furious lightsaber duel is underway. DARTH VADER is backing LUKE
SKYWALKER towards the end of the gantry. A quick move by Vader, chops
off Luke's hand! It goes spinning off into the ventilation shaft. Luke
backs away. He looks around, but realizes there's nowhere to go but
straight down.
Darth Vader: Obi Wan never told you what happened to your father.
Luke: He told me enough! He told me you killed him!
Darth Vader: No... I am your father!
Luke: No, it's not true! It's impossible.
Darth Vader: Search your feelings... you know it to be true...
Luke: NO!
Darth Vader: Yes, it is true... and you know what else? You know that
brass droid of yours?
Luke: Threepio?
Darth Vader: Yes... Threepio... I built him... when I was 7 years
old...
Luke: No...
Darth Vader: Seven years old? And what have you done? Look at yourself, no
hand, no job, and couldn't even levitate your own ship out of the
swamp...
Luke: I destroyed your precious Death Star!
Darth Vader: When you were 20! When I was 10, I single-handedly destroyed
a Trade Federation Droid Control ship!
Luke: Well, it's not my fault...
Darth Vader: Oh, here we go... "Poor me... my father never gave me
what I wanted for my birthday... boo hoo, my daddy's the Dark Lord of
the Sith... waahhh wahhh!"
Luke: Shut up...
Darth Vader: You're a slacker! By the time I was your age, I had
exterminated the Jedi knights!
Luke: I used to race my T-16 through Beggar's Canyon.
Darth Vader: Oh, for the love of the Emperor... 10 years old, winner
of the Boonta Eve Open... Only human to ever fly a Pod Racer... right
here, baby!
{Luke looks down the shaft. Takes a step towards it.}
Darth Vader: I was wrong... You're not my kid... I don't know whose
you are, but you sure ain't mine...
{Luke takes a step off the platform, hesitates, then plunges down
the shaft.}
{Darth Vader looks after him.}
Darth Vader: Get a haircut!
The majority of the flaming during the day wasn't just for the 'slashdot' april fools post.
It was because you posted so goddamn many april fools jokes in a row that it was annoying as hell. Yeah, that's great, the occational one is nice. maybe a 'wrap up' like a quickies or something. but not EVERY DAMN POST.
Your marketing change, that was okay, and if you hadn't done any other april fools day posts, it might have truely fooled some more effectively. as it was, it was just dumb.

Knight Rider, a shadowy flight into the dangerous world of a man who will soon be in prototype.

billy gates why do you make this possible ? Stop making money and fix your software!!
The best of the list is 'hint I blow MCA'. Glad you pointed this out, because I plan to repeat it. `8r)

Chewlies Gum
egroup example
1,000 T1s == 1.5Gb ~= OC30
12.5 GB == 100Gb ~= OC650
a very minor disparity, don't you think? Why can't press releases say 'VERY FAST!' instead of quoting fake numbers?

Guess I better just give up the idea of a job I love doing and learn to hate insurance or something.

CmdrTaco posted this. He then references at the end 'if you have questions, email hemos'.
Gee, that's odd. You don't announce something and then say 'if you have questions, email someone else'. heh
They moved the link on us. It's now here.
Careful, Tom's Hardware and nvidia might sue you.
