by Plato. A discussion of the nature of knowledge and the ways in which we know what we know. This book has proven to be absolutely indispensable for my work as a programmer. Rigorous mental discipline with an eye toward tearing down what we think we know to understand how to know is not only good practice for designing applications but also for life in general. I give it to all my student-aged friends.

  3. First off on Open Source Alternative to Dreamweaver's .LBI? · · Score: 3, Interesting

Anyone who uses Dreamweaver for any serious work is off their freaking rocker. I can't imagine for the life of me why anyone would use those tools. It's not just code bloat that makes them so awful but the simple fact that it keeps you ignorant! Do you think the really really interesting and well-designed websites used Dreamweaver for anythign other than project management? You have to get dirty if you want to learn how to code anythign on the web. There are so many undocumented or undervalued tricks to be discovered! But you'll never discover them because Dreamweaver, Frontpage, etc. are made to do one thing: make your website fit within the confines of that program. If Dreamweaver can't do it, you can't do it. That's kind of sad.

As for what I use (yes I am a professional for almost ten years now).....

Have I made my point yet? :) Extensible, syntax highlighting, project management, open source, free, CVS repository browsing and control, internal PHP processor, internal Perl RegEx engine, Apache control, [insert your need here]

Eclipse is an unbelievable tool that I have been using for about a year now and I keep finding new ways for it to help me do my job better.

You can go to Eclipse.org to pick up a copy. I highly recommend getting v3.0 M8

  5. Who Gives An Intellectual Property's Ass? on A Replacement Term for 'Intellectual Property'? · · Score: 3, Interesting

This seems about the silliest thing I have ever heard. The term is a narrowly defined legal term. Changing a term does not ipso facto change the underlying discussion. Call it "Ice Cream Dog" and you would still be talking about ownership of those things which issue from your intellect and which you should have a right to do with as you see fit. Please stop trying to "sanitize" the language and deal with the actual problems, not get caught up in whatever the term de vogue might be.

Check with the Dept of Education. One of the things that Al Gore did that was really nice was give dirt cheap rates (sometimes free depending on the school and their demographics) on T1 lines for schools and educational institutions. It's been years since I waded through the paperwork for a school but believe me it's worth it. They even give you a stipend for the router and switch.

This is all of course so long as Bush hasn't done yet another stupid thing.

  9. Re:The key is standards, not software on Norwegian Government Expires Microsoft Contract · · Score: 1

Of course this overlooks some points. I was clear that it did. My overall point is something we can agree on, though. The problem is the way in which Microsoft products force us to use their products. And it's subtle (sometimes not so) the way they do. So the point I made was that if we change what software produces (by demand rather than regulation) we would have a better chance of changing the USE of microsoft and therefore the MARKET SHARE of Microsoft. And besides, we are talking about governments. The main thing governments should be doing is communicating with their constituents. How does Joe Voter feel about buying Office just to get the data he needs from his government?

  10. The key is standards, not software on Norwegian Government Expires Microsoft Contract · · Score: 4, Insightful

It seems to me that most governments would do more for furthering the independence from proprietary software by increasing dependence on open standards. For instance, if I were President for a day (mwahaha!), the first thing I woudl do is issue an executive order stating that no agency, department or NGO may use .doc formatted texts. Where documents are purely text, they must be sent in plain ASCII or rtf formats. Suddenly the "need" for Word is lessened considerably. Need spreadsheets? Send tab-delimited files everywhere. I don't have all the details worked out but it seems to me the reason why governments and the like are so dependent on MSFT is because they are dependent on what the software produces not how the software performs.

  11. Tech Too Early on Handsprings for Kids? · · Score: 5, Insightful

I love technology as much as the next guy but let's get real. Putting Handsprings within reach of the average at-risk kid is simply foolish. If you all remember the principle of GIGO, these kids do not have the large skill set to be able to use these things to the PDA's potential. Give them books to read, better classrooms to study in, pay the teachers to sit around with the kids more. At-risk kids need to have the fundamental education we all got when we were kids. They won't get it by using a Handspring.

Your statement shows your complete misunderstanding of the Constitution. This a contract. Contracts can and regularly do require one or both parties to give up certain rights. Could they sue? Absolutely. Could they win? Absolutely. It would only be unconstitutional if they tried to sue you for making statements about them when you hadnt' ever signed an agreement not to do so. what the hell do you think NDAs are? 14. You give up your rights on Microsoft FrontPage License Prohibits Anti-Microsoft Speech · · Score: 1

The constitution ensures that no one may abridge your right to free speech except where you give up that right yourself. That is what happens here. By using the product, you agree to the terms of its use and you abridge your own right to say what you want. The constitution would provide recourse if there were no clause and M$ were tryign to stop you from saying things about it because you use their products. You all need to read more than just the Constitution.
