The operative phrase here is 'your 1080p TV'. How many real folks have actually gone out and bought one of those fancy new TVs? I'd bet that both an HD-DVD and a Blu-Ray disk look the same on my 19" set. Going from VHS to DVD was worthwhile. Going to a new TV + new player + new discs is not.
The problem is that for most users the Aero Glass interface IS Vista. Look at XP. How many users do you know that would balk at running XP in W2k mode? My wife does. For her it is not really XP if it does not look like XP. You can bet your bottom dollar that Microsoft is going to market the heck out of Vista WITH Aero Glass. Thus, most consumers will not be happy unless they can get teh Aero look too.
In the end, it all means that many users will once again have to upgrade their hardware in order to upgrade their software.
Look. This whole single-button thing is dead. Got it? DEAD. My Intel iMac came with a mouse that has multiple buttons. Yes, from Apple. Thus, we all have the opportunity now to get up and leave that poor old dead horse alone.
Actually, it is _not_ a regular retail version. Apple only sells upgrades. Yes, you can blow away your Mac's HD and install from scratch from the box, but the intention is that it is an upgrade to a previously installed version of MacOS.

are the ones that are NOT advertised that way. The iPod was never sold as a 'killer' of some other MP3 player. For that matter, the PC itself was not sold that way. Each of these things was promoted based on its own merits -- and not on how it compared to other things. What is it with our hyper-competitive culture now that always has to find 'The only one'?
Exactly! Plus, I figure that my new iMac 20" should be even easier to carry to BF2 LAN parties (which I will finally be able to participate in) as those fancy, shmancy Shuttle systems. And as for speed, I'd be wiling to bet that even with Rosetta, it is still way faster than my 800Mhz G4 flat-panel iMac:-)
Depending on what you mean by 'broken', cron may not be fixed for the next version of Tiger. Apple is wanting folks to move towards using launchd for everything. This includes cron, at, xinetd, inetd and rc. You can add your own scheduled items to launchd. See: man launchd and man launchctl
I live in Fairbanks Alaska. While out driving around, my Prius does just fine. The only problem is that I have to play the which-vent-does-the-air-come-out game (eg; push the button for the window defrost wait till the toes get cold, push the Auto button again until the widow starts to frost over... rinse/repeat) however, this is only when the outside temperature is colder than about -35 to -40. At -50 the heater just can't keep up -- but then neither could my Ford Tempo:-)
Luckily, I have a heated garage for it. Otherwise I would be worried about the 12v battery freezing (since it is in the back of the car and I did not want to drill any holes to install a battery blanket on it) when it gets down to -40. I do have a frost-plug heater and oil-pan heater (which get plugged in when the car is parked and it's colder then -10F).
I think the main problem with this is that the power generated by a solar panel the size of a Prius roof would be on the order of milliwatts. The main battery of a Prius would take far more 'oomph' to charge than the panel could provide.
One thing to remember is that the floppy drives in Macs have always been motorized. Yes, you can do the paper-clip trick, but the normal procedure was to tell the OS to eject the drive. Thus, Apple made assumptions about how and when the disk would be removed that are different from Microsoft's -- where PCs had drives with manually removed floppies. I think that this is why (as another poster mentioned) Microsoft implemented a scheme to enable floppies to be 'ripped-out' and Apple did not. Also, since folks frequently had to play 'floppy-shuffle' for larger programs and data (I certainly remember playing this with my//gs!), the command-E menu option just ejected the disk so that you could swap it out and, later, swap it back. In contrast, dragging to the trash meant "I'm done with this floppy"
As long as the big 'headline' sports like football, basketball (and hockey here in Alaska) continue to bring in the money they will always be coddled by politicians. I mean, it may be obvious, but I think that many folks are interested in watching these sports specifically _for_ the violence in them. For example, how many times have you heard "I went to a fight and a hockey game broke out"? Isn't this also a big reason why so many (way spoiled and overpaid) pro atheletes behave so badly off the field? I'm no fan of GTA, but I see it as just a small part of the overall hyper-violent diet that we are fed here in the US.
While this project (Blue Mind) is certainly getting alot of press, there is another IBM supercomputer project that based on the Blue Gene concept. It is going to study the often complex nature of sperm/egg interactions. It's called (wait for it)...

Thank you very much. I'll be here all week (try the veal)...
One thing that I'd really like to get across to folks is that there are many reasons for buying a Prius other than just MPG. For one thing, the Prius is optimized for minimal emissions. That's why it is classified as a Super Ultra Low Emissions Vehicle (SULEV).
Another reason is that has a wide-open interior with lots of room (especially since it is a hatchback). I'm finding that I can haul all sorts of things in my Prius.
My Prius is also very quiet (even when the ICE is running).
Lastly, it is just a cool car. I just love having the computer display in the dash. The only thing missing, really, is a 'geek mode.' That is, a mode that shows the outputs of all of the sensors (like coolant temperature, generator amps, rpm, pressures, etc).
Really, when you get down to it, there are not very many (if any) other cars with all of its features in the same price range. That plus Toyota's reputation for long-term reliability means that I'll have my Prius for many years to come:-)
Boy, I sure wish I still had some mod points. Great post. One sad thing that I'm noticing is that most of the well thought out posts in support of evolutionary theory are from Europeans while the ones like the ancestor of this one are clearly American. What happened to us? How much farther will the pendulum swing to the religious right? I'm pretty sure that I don't want to live in a theocracy.
Actually, quartz is much more than just bitmapped operations. It handles all of the drawing primitives and such and is PDF based (similar to the way that NeXT's windowing system was based on Postscript). Thus, Quartz is already vector based.
Perhaps you are thinking of Quartz Extreme? This uses the graphics card to do compositing of windows for display (each window is flattened to a texture map essentially). For more, see:

This movie was so bad that my brain won't even let me remember the title anymore... It was one of those 3D movies and the basic plot was that a town had been taken over by some mysterious force that enclosed it in a plexiglass dome. Most of the population was kept 'passive' by drinking something from an alien tree (or something) that had teats. Much of the movie was standard 3d shlock like someone sweeping and then throwing the broom out towards the audience.
About 3/4 of the theater had walked out before the movie was even half-way finished and I remember that my dad was apologizing to my mom for weeks afterward for insisting that we stay for the whole thing. *shiver*
Just a reminder to Linus: Don't be fooled by imitations...You can always tell a true Oregonian by the moss growing on the north side of their nose.
Portland is such a cool city. If was ever to move out of Fairbanks and down to the Lower48, it would probably be to there...

Yup, I sure do have some fond memories of D&D... My favorite character was definitely Chrrzx. He was a 8' tall Thrykreen (sp?) -- basically a giant praying mantis -- who was a former gladiator. He could jump about 20' straight up and then grab someone with 2 arms and slash them up with the wrist razors on the other two arms (and then make a nice snack out of their head;-) . Unfortunately, when he finally died the other players decided that rather than ressurect him that they would just cut him up to use his chiten for armor... the dirty rotten SOBs:-P

Uh, sorry but Windows sessions still always look butt ugly. Even in Fischer-Price mode.

:-) I use both. I have Enlightenment set as my X11 window manager for 10.3 and it works really well (via Fink).
