Anyhoo, what seems to be the trouble? Is there any hope of the site coming back? Will slashdot ever get private messaging so I don't have to post this in a story?

  7. Re:Something doesn't really make sense on Music Industry Seeks Payola Inquiry · · Score: 2

    I agree.

In fact, Oakenfold is one of the more popular, if not the most popular dj in the US. I only said that because the original poster was saying that Oakenfold and his ilk don't get much/enough exposure in the states.

  8. Re:Something doesn't really make sense on Music Industry Seeks Payola Inquiry · · Score: 2
To tell the truth, I don't listen to the radio much anymore since I don't tend to like what they choose to play. If I had my choice, there would be a station that played Oakenfold, Sasha, Van Dyk, and all the other European artists that really know how to make music but have not gotten enough exposure in the US to make them mainstream.

Let's take Paul Oakenfold, and examine this for a minute... He's a dj... so how is he "making" music? (I know he produced a couple of tracks on the Swordfish soundtrack but they suck anyway)

My point is that Oakenfold isn't about the music any more than any pop band from the US. He's also all about the image. He appeals to people that like things that seem more "underground", like yourself, though it's still all an act. I have a question for you: Would you still like the artists you mentioned if their stuff was pushed and accepted like current pop? Would you really?

Don't get me wrong, I mean, I like a lot of stuff from the artists you mentioned. Shit. I even like BT sometimes, but it's not for the image. It's purely for the sound. In fact I like some N'Sync et al songs too. (not to be confused with liking the group in general) But I don't care whether a song is popular or underground or trendy or campy. The only thing I care about is how it sounds in my ears.

Imagine the frame rates you'd get playing the original Doom or Duke Nukem on your PIV 2.2 gig with 512 megs of memory and a 65 meg video card.

Doom would be about the same
FYI Doom had a hard coded frame rate limit of 35fps.

PS Good luck finding a 65 meg video card. (They're usually in powers of 2)

  10. I could do without it, thanks. on Kazaa, Verizon Propose Compulsory Music Licensing · · Score: 2

I don't know about you, but I for one, could do without most of the promotion the labels put out. All the promotion I need is the music not being crap.

Don't say I would never be exposed to any new music either, since I discover most music I like myself, in ways that cost record labels little to nothing. I think artists would be able to pay for recording if they were getting a fair amount of compensation for their work.

In short, greedy labels do nothing nothing for me. Out with them.

  11. PR hits on Microsoft vs. Northwest Schools Part II · · Score: 3, Informative
Microsoft can't afford any more PR hits, because the next rock could be the one that starts the avalanche. It's pretty clear that the most effective weapon against MS's tactics is public knowledge of their behavior. Sure, they can smooth it over, but as they say, a tiger can't change its stripes. Meow.

Sure they can afford more PR hits. Come on. They're Microsoft. Do you really expect a few PR hits to have any significant effect in the face of overwhelming advertising power and market dominance over most (admittedly mostly clueless) users? These people have come to expect PR hits and controversy as part of the industry. "That's just how it works." Microsoft wouldn't want to raise their expectations, now would they?

I'd be just as suspicious of people who claimed to not engage in file swapping. I have no specific reason to distrust either.

No that does not make sense. I have a feeling you don't know what you're talking about. Once the sound reaches your ear, you hear it. (assuming it's in the audible range, etc etc etc)

Yeah, anyone heard the song "Only God knows why" by Kid Rock? That was the first song I ever heard by him and I figured that he just couldn't sing, so they were shifting the pitch to stay with the song.

That's exactly right. In all his other songs he's yelling/screaming/singing. I believe that is his only song where the pitch of his voice really sticks out. So, it's no surprise. There. Kid Rock can't sing.

  18. pushing MHz on Intel's 2.4GHz Pentium 4 Unleashed · · Score: 2, Interesting

While astute computer users know that raw MHz does not automatically translate to application/game speed, not so in the case of the typical user.

When AMD broke ahead of Intel in the MHz race, their marketing department was quick capitalize on this with a media blitz that even included some TV commercials.

However, now that Intel once again taken the lead in the MHz race, astutely AMD has once again retreated its marketing tactics to the knowledgeable and computer savvy.

Every unbiased hardware review page has said pretty much the same thing, clock cycle for clock cycle the AMD is still faster. However, the average computer buyer is still tied down to the more is better idea.

And honestly, that is something that is hard to refute. More RAM is better, bigger HDs are better, bigger monitors/screens are better, faster modems are better...why don't CPU's follow the same rule?

The answer is a pretty complicated one and to explain that would require some basic knowledge that you just can't squeeze into a 30 second commercial. AMD has made noise about a marketing campaign that will educate the public, however so far it has been just that, noise.

Well, perhaps i could have been more verbose, but that was my point.
The original poster claimed that having an attractive woman in a game might make the game sell "a few copies", but it was probably closer to millions in the case of Tomb Raider. I don't think it was geared toward women. That sexy ass can only be geared towards guys.

I was only trying to point out that the other poster was understating the power of sex to sell games.
