Direct3D is more like OpenGL, DirectX includes a whole boat load of stuff OpenGL can't even think about touching, stuff like DirectPlay and DirectSound for starters.
People, especially those who love the anti-Microsoft FUD, shoult better educate themselves before attempting to speak about Microsoft...
OK I am borrowing this from a fellow poster over at Ars Technica. Read and get a fucking clue:
"Ok, just to set the record straight, since many people (even right here on this board) seem to be clueless (or purposely covering their eyes) about the whole Kerberos and Win2K thing. Facts: (all of which I have documentation for, including direct quotes from Jeremy from the Samba team, and Paul from the MIT Athena project/Kerberos team)
- Win2K's implementation of krb5 v1 (Kerberos 5) is fully compliant with MIT's spec. This is fully documented and acknowledged by MIT and people like the Samba team.
- Where the confusion lies is Microsoft's usage of a special vendor-specific proprietary data field that Microsoft uses proprietarily.
Microsoft knew that the Kerberos spec didn't provide everything that they needed, so they contacted MIT and explained their position. MIT, eager to help MS and improve the standard graciously met with MS and worked out a solution. The solution was to create a field for vendors (like MS) to put their miscellaneous proprietary data.
This field would be used by Microsoft Windows boxes, but ignored by non-Windows machines without any harm or loss in basic functionality.
What MS does is store group membership and group policy information in that field. This data would be worthless to, say, a BSD KDC or other server anyhow, so there's no loss.
The only thing that MS didn't do is provide people who COULD use the data (namely the samba team) with the format of the data in that field. While that isn't very nice, it certainly is not a breach of the standard.
Recently, they released this data, but under a restrictive license. I haven't read the license yet, but from what I've heard, the license, at this point, prevents the samba team from using it in their products.
So, if you would be so kind as to not spout inaccuracies or falsehoods in the future, and give less-informed people the impression that MS broke the standard.
Most of the documentation of this and MS' use of the GSS-API can be found in several posts from Jeremy from the SAMBA team and Paul Hill from the MIT team on NT BugTraq in the Fed-Mar area of the archives.
Also, there is extensive documentation of how MS used Kerberos on their site, and it's actually factual reference material."
Damn people, you amaze me. This is about Apple being pricks about the whole Skins thing. If Microsoft did the same thing there would be enough noise to wake the dead. However mention Apple and all the Mac Nuts come out of the woodwork and make this into another Microsoft bashing session. Lets get real here boys and girls. Apple is INFRINDGING on our rights to SKIN something, not copy the features of an OS, not taking code from a program... Once again Apple proves they are the Whores of the Computer Industry. SOME AC asked what Microsoft invented lately. Well last time I checked Microsoft was a SOFTWARE company NOT a hardware company (well OK they do make joysticks, keyboards and mice, ALL of which are original, and most of which even the staunchest Linux fans seem to like). Just what has Apple invented lately? AGP? Nope that was Intel. USB? Nope that was Intel too. The G3/G4? Nope that was Motorola. IDE? Nope Western Digital and Intel. MacOS X? Nope that was NeXT. Hmmm... you know the ONLY thing I can think of is FireWire... which they invented in 1993! (go check the patent on it.) Gee they made a fruity case! Big deal...
Lets see, non-x86 processors make up ABOUT 7% of the industry. Of those how many are using Linux? I would say less than 1% as most Mac users could even USE linux, let alone run it full time on their system.
Now there are far far fewer Alpaha boxes in the field than even Macs, and most of those are not going to be running Linux, most likely Digital Unix or Tru64, so it kinda rules that one out too.
In order for a company to even think about making exe's for the arch, it HAS to have a sizeable user community.
God, why is every time ANYTHING that Linux is not included in, people point there fingers at Microsoft? if you had BOTHERED to READ, you would see that Quest is including NETSCAPE! Since when has Microsoft supported Netscape? Get real QuoteMstr, your Microsoft paranioa is not helping anything here.
Supporting 50 of these laptops running Windows NT and 15 dual booting NT and Linux (RedHat 6.0), I can tell you that IBM has a LONG way to go. The damn DSP modems in the things take up TWO IRQ's and a DMA! Not to mention the sound card which takes up another IRQ, and two DMAs. By the time IBM is done stuffing really crappy hardware that NO ONE else uses into these systems, you are left with little upgradeablitity in the line of PC cards. Stick a network card in these things and you are really low on IRQs, not to mention the fact that occasionally, the laptop just tries to change IRQ's for no reason at all.
The Toshiba's that we are starting to use here are much MUCH better and 100% easier to configure under both NT and Linux.
A company comes out to start supporting Linux and you people get all over them because they are not supporting such and such or are doing things there way. Glide IS faster than OpenGL and a hell of a lot easier to program for too. If I was 3dfx I would say to hell with you and keep catering to the Windows people. Get over it...
How is that? Hell the K6-3's are selling for a higher price than the P3's at the same clock speed? Not to mention you need to get a new motherboard and RAM to support the K7 where as I can upgrade my Intel CPU by taking out the old one and popping in the new one.
I have been using 6.0 SuSe since it was released. Looking forward to this new version. But just what does Voodoo3 Beta support mean? Is it Derek's 2D only XServer? Or is it actually supporting 3D Accleration? Hmmmm...
Cheaper? Explain to me why the K6-3's are currently more expensive than the similarly clocked Pentium III's? Don't believe it? Go check out CPU Prices at http://www.sharkyextreme.com
Why? Because they cannot even make enough of the K6-3 450's to go around. They are almost IMPOSSIBLE to get a hold of because AMD cannot produce em.
Nope, they are going to ship a.18um version. Intel CAN do it with TODAY'S technology if they are using Kryotech just like AMD is planning on doing.
Hell AMD can't even make enough K6-3's so they are still pumping out K6-2's. Hmmmm... wonder why AMD's K6-3's are MORE expensive than even the Pentium III's at the same clock speeds? Gee what am I going to do, get a whole new motherboard, and CPU or pop out my existing CPU and put a new one in? Which is going to be better for the consumer?
Um two months ago Intel showed of a Gigahertz chip. Not to mention that they are actually SHIPPING the chip they overclocked to 1000Mhz. And the fact that Intel can PRODUCE enough chips to keep the market satisfied unlike some other chip manufacturer.
For the LAST time, DirectX != OpenGL.
Yep, just like the whole Hotmail thing.
Funny that it is changing now.
I wonder why they are FORMER Microsoft employee's?
It's just keeping with the "cool" thing to do currently; pot shots at MS.
Taking AltiVec out of the processor... hmmm...
Since AltiVec was needed to put the G4 into the Supercomputer "class" does this mean it is no longer a supercomputer? Heh...
No it most certainly does have a command prompt.
All I can say is so what.
You are a business, and you don't want competitors products around while you do your thing.

What is up with "Maybe he should read beyond the headlines"???
Maybe the linux community should be glad that there are still entertainment software houses supporting this arrogant community
Wow, a great read that was not bashing MS or someone else for something else.
/.
Good work

Gee... hate to say it, but under Windows.. I drop the CD in the drive and I am done for the most part unless I want to customize my install...

Um, the K7 is not here now and will not be untill late June early July...
And what is Linus saying now about making money?
Bill F.
You just know the OS/2 holdouts HAVE to say something...

Just the CASE and fridge unit weigh 77pounds!

Don't we all do that anyways? Hey how about a poll about how many people leave there case off...
