    There are some things you cannot put into a contract, no matter how "legally binding" and "accepted" it is; like slavery, selling your children etc.

    IMO this "work for hire" is just a sophisticated form of slavery. But maybe it's just me.

    Oh no, here we go again. Just because it's about the internet and contains a lot of words that are a little bit different to what "normal" people use daily - like "router", "hosts" and "routable address space" - it doesn't mean it's something dangerous. Not even new.

    Can you imagine someone getting funds to look into the origins of "paper spam"? "Oh no, the spammers are using bogus return addresses!" "Bad guys can communicate pretty safe and unhindered by putting their messages in envelopes, stamping them and sendim them by mail!"

    I can understand that the guys had to show something for 3 years worth of "research", but unless the securityfocus article is a very-very short, abridged version for the masses, they have no results.

    Special Interest Lobbyists: Point out that at least one scientist somewhere thinks that the changes may not be due to human activity

    Politicians: Heeding lobbyists, maintain status quo by financing a better Echelon and a better StarWars defense system

    Net Results: Nothing, but much more expensive.

    As I learn more about linux I see redhat failing to meet my needs/wants more and more.

    Well, as you learn more about linux you fall usually in one of the following categories:

    you don't have so much time on your hands anymore (most frequent). You tend to keep using redhat because it's familiar, and lets you experiment with (or concentrate on) stuff that matters/ earns you money;

    you still have time, and the wish to take challenges; tis is the *nice* way, like winning the lottery. Good luck with Debian...

It can be frustrating to try and install some software only to be held back by unmet dependencies. This usually leads to time-loss as one has to track down these dependencies, install them, and then install the package you wanted to install in the first place.

    I've been using redhat - at least on some test machines not involved directly in the network - since 4.1. While rpm is far from perfect, it's also not that bad as the article implies: you can search for the missing dependencies here -- note that you have to check "Provided Packages", then download those packages from your favourite mirror.

    Maxtor's press release from Oct.29 is here, and contains this piece of info:

    Duh. I suppose maxtor's 160Gb drive increases hard drive capacity with... well... up to 60% compared to 100Gb hard drives also. :)

    Why would Microsoft want a long discussion in which their company is mentioned thousands of times in the context: "Microsoft is terrified of Linux". I mean, who's getting the publicity there?

    In a subtle way, Microsoft: "terrified by linux" isn't consistent with "total monopoly", is it?

    And IMO the message is more along the lines of "...concerned/worried about linux", not really terrified. All in all, as was said before, the "leak" is just a standard "competition assesment" - standard procedure in any industry these days.

    It starts to be annoying, with all those "leaked" documents from M$, Compaq, HP, you-name-it. The pattern:

    "leak" a vaguely "indiscrete" document that actually doesn't say anything new, doesn't reveal/expose someone, and most importantly doesn't get you sued;

    relax and watch as the media starts a lenghty discussion about it, mentioning your company's name 1000's of times.

    And when I say media, it's not about theregister or /. tey are targetting: it's the more "mainstream" media (zdnet, nytimes etc.) or even "dead tree" media and tv.

    I agree this is the best thing to do, but it's not always an option: sometimes you need to show the receipt in order to get a replacement (and almost always in order to get a refund) - I don't keep the receipts. :) Also, it may not be convenient to go back to the shop etc. What I'm trying to say is "plan in advance" is always better than "get your money back".

    Don't know about tic-tac-toe, but I'm sure Solitaire is a form of art, albeit dark art: how else can one explain Windows' world domination? :)

    Reading thru the "irresponsibly" link, I have to agree with the "Responsible Handling is Key", but in a slightly different way than the author meant: the responsibility should be carried only by the software manufacturer. Just imagine if Ford tried to stop people reporting problems with the braking system... okay, this might not be the same thing; so imagine them trying to stop you from telling that all this years cars can be opened with a toy remote; do they stand a chance in hell to get anything else than a laughter?

    Maybe it's time for the software industry to stop being the spoiled child and enter maturity, like any other industry: by assuming responibility.

    And if you challenge a cybersquatter by having a lawyer even so much as draft the necessary letters, you will incur legal fees which almost certainly will cover registration fees for the next decade or two at minimum.

    Good point, but... the big companies are paying the lawyers anyway, and this "let's wait and see if anyone really registers it" attitude seems to me more consistent with big organisations' behaviour - where nobody really wants to make decisions which result in an immediate action.

    The big business is paying the lawyers anyway, and $2k is nothin' for'em...

    you may not even get the domain back because the squatter can always say he registered it with good intention

    They can say anything, but they must prove it. And it's expensive to defend yourself, too... $2k is a lot of money if it's going out of your own, personal pocket.

    rush to protect the value of their IP by registering all possible .your_TLD_here preceded by their trademark.

    Why bother? You can wait until someone else buys it, *if* they buy it, then call them cybersqatters etc. and get the domain.
    But probably they'll just rush as you said...

    For exactly the same reason they didn't use windowsupdate.microsoft.com : completely different audience, completely different content.

    Although I agree it would be nice idea, you'll see that a surprisingly low number of people would agree to share the redhat iso images compared to the ones ready to share pr0n.

    the Samba team brief would of course have to start with a discussion of what Samba is and what its position/market share is in regards to Microsoft

    You're probably right - if they really can do this. Can anybody - or even somebody with a specific interest in the outcome of the case - submit such a brief? Is the judge supposed to read it?
    IANAL and I would really like to read a documented opinion about this...

    You think the judge heard about "samba" -- I mean, other than "south-american dance"? I really doubt it.
    And what can be added to the solution agreed upon by the DOJ - some specific technical requirements, like naming ports and protocols? There are no words for that in legalese. :)

    No, not at all. It's just a tool to draw nice (?) maps, if that's your idea of entertainment.
    Give credit to the feds - they don't need to wait until someone with too much time on their hands writes this kind of software.
