  1. W3C are the *real* innovators on Netscape Founder Says Web Browsing Innovation Dead · · Score: 1
CSS, Macromedia Flash, PHP, etc are all great web innovations that continue to push the envelope.
What exactly does Flash or PHP have to do with the capabilities of a web browser?
Just because natural selection weeded out netscape doesn't mean the rest of the world stopped innovating.
Goddamnit! It's still used damnit. Go grab Netscape 7.1 and tell me it sucks as much as you think. I've been using Mozilla since M14 and I am constantly impressed. I haven't used Internet Explorer for 2 years now and no problems... don't miss it a bit. That's what standards are for. The content should never care what is used to display it.

Wow, so many paralells in what your son is going through and how my life was getting through schools. I'm exceptionally intelligent, scored near the top of my classes on tests, had a horrible attendence record, and never did homework or studied. Constantly getting in trouble for stupid things, or reading/studying off-topic things in class.

I'm 25 now and employed as a Java developer, and I've found a company which accepts my erratic schedules and slightly different approach to problem solving. So things are going well. Still it's nice to know how to best utilize my way of thinking and acting, and avoid doing things the hard way by trying to force myself to conform, or if I have to, at least understanding the reasons my brain works the way it does.

Anyway, thanks for mention of the book. I've just ordered it :)

  11. So what? on P2P Bandwidth Hogging the Net · · Score: 4, Insightful
If everyone is using P2P applications, I don't see how it's so shocking that a majority the bandwidth is being used for it.

Would it be used if it weren't for P2P? Or would it just sit idle anyhow? There is gobs of bandwidth available on the backbones. Miles and miles of dark fiber. What's going on here is the broadband ISPs business models are collapsing. They count on selling everyone tons of bandwidth but then only a fraction of it being used or for very short periods of time. If everyone signed on and started transferring all they could, ISPs would become hopelessly bottlenecked.

I say, pony up and add the bandwidth, too bad. As for everything besides ISPs (upstream providers) there is no shortage of bandwidth. If there is, it's a regional problem and all that is needed is to turn on a new strand of fiber and add a few gigabits, problem solved.

Finally, it's not P2P... its CONTENT. It doesn't matter that its people transferring files to other people. The new variable here is there is GOBS of multimedia CONTENT available for people to download. It doesn't matter where it's coming from. P2P has just made it practical and realistic to download as much as we can now.

That is really up to the creator of the original work (or the current copyright owner), and the licensing terms they've agreed on.

Part of the priveledge of actually creating a completely original work, is you get to decide if others can use it, and if so, how it can be used.

Honestly, 720x540 is the minimum acceptable digital analogue of the NTSC spec.

I seriously doubt VHS recorded on a 20 year old VCR is going to output a picture sharper than DVD quality.

Yes, 720x540 will perfectly reproduce a perfect, noise free NTSC signal. But NOT VHS. Even today's VHS recorders probably only output a usable resolution of 500x400 give or take. I say usable, meaning, that you would extract more pixels than that from it, but it would not increase the clarity of sample.
