People -- this is nothing but a good idea! Its not censorship.. And its not stupid.. Some video games *do* de-sensitize people to violence. *Some* people really are influenced negatively by video games, and quite frankly as a parent, I can completely understand the need for a ratings system and some access control. Some games really are disturbing -- have you heard of 'left behind'? I wouldnt want my child exposed to that garbage! By having a ratings system which allows parents to guage a video games content, it helps them make a sound decision on whether or not they want their children exposed to it.
Parents dont have the time these days to reseach, evaluate, and determine if the latest title their child asks for is appropriate for them or not. And they shouldnt have to worry about their 12 year old kid going down to the store and picking up a game where the object is to kill people of a different race or religious orientation to get a better score!!
Its bad enouugh that that there are people in the world which find this sort of thing entertaining. As a fair society, the very least we can do is allow those parents who actually care enough about their kids, the ability and the tools to ensure they they are exposed to material appropriate to their age and maturity level.
Clean air isnt the main culprit here - its the burning of fossile fuels, methane about by livestock, deforestation, etc..
Dont give the naysayers anything they can possible use here to slow down global warming efforts - this is a big deal people and it ought to be taken seriously by everyone.
Your comment about 'setting off nukes' is entirely inappropriate.
We're talking about the future of the human race - the world my daughter has to live in.
1. The user uses his/her own password to auth - no need to remember 2 passwords.
2. You dont have to expose the actual root password among multiple administrators, and can thus use a complex mutual root password for a collection of servers.
3. If you want to take away admin access for a single user, you can just lock his/her account. You dont have to go across 20 servers and change the root password! If you are using centralized password database this is even easier.
4. You can revoke admin access without revoking user access.
5. root shells work with the user's environment settings. When you execute a 'sudo bash' for example, you maintain your environment variables. Your 'home dir' is still *your* own dir - not root's. Things liks 'cvs' still continue to work.
The guy does sound a bit loony, but GTA *is* trash. And while I doubt it was the software developer's intentions for police officers to get killed by addicts of their game, if the game did have any effect which resulted in those deaths, then I dont see why they shouldnt be held responsible at least to some extent.
Christ, people sue McDonald's when their coffee is too hot!?! You think a lawsuit against a company who's product is an engrossing video game that glorifies killing innocent people and law enforcement is out of line?
People *are* affected psychologicaly by video games, some more than others.
Theres limits here that people in a civilized society should be able to see without the need for legislation. GTA goes beyond one of those limits.
Consider: Pretty much everyone would agree that if a game came out tomorrow where you played the part of a Nazi soldier in a deathcamp and the goal was to exterminate Jewish citizens, that that would be distastful and 'over the line' right? (I sure hope you would agree!!)
Well, GTA crosses that line too - just not as far over..
3 people are dead: 3 people who seem to have done more with their lives besides play violent video games.
IMO, the 'right to live without getting shot' preempts the 'right to play a violent video game'. And if people cant see this on their own, then legislation ends up coming into play. And that just sucks.
The solution is not to purchase crap like GTA in the first place.
Wow. That guy is a complete ass! Are you kidding me? Linux is the 'nix in the spotlight getting the chicks -- Im a 37 year old devout Linux enthusiast w/ a 25 year old girlfriend.. 'Whatever - 'BSD nerds..:P
Fact: Everything 'cool' happens to Linux first.. Have you looked through the enhanced security stuff in recent kernels? Ever took a look at Gentoo Linux's Portage? Ever tried to do 'multimedia' stuff on a BSD box? Ever played 'Enemy Territory'? IS there even hardware accelerated graphics support on a BSD?!?
My main desktops at home and work are both Linux - and they're FAR more stable than my Windows environment. BSD for a desktop OS - are you kidding me?
That guy needs to shut up - he's bitter because the Linux world is sooooo much more cool..
'quite frankly.. body 'modifications' as the article refered to them, are looked at by many others as 'body mutilations'. While I am all for people having the freedom to do whatever they want, this actually means 'being able to do whatever they want so long as they dont infringe on the freedoms of everyone else'. Subjecting others to the display of such mutilation crosses the line. A similar example is if I started refusing to take a shower every day I went to work - my 'right to stink' is overridden by other's 'right to breath fresh air'. Besides if you really analyze it, puncturing your body is fundamentally disturbing - in fact I think that the people that do this, do it just to get this shock value' from this disturbance they give others. They're basically insecure and think it makes them 'cool' - when in fact they've just de-sensitized themselves so much they think they like it. Whatever. There's limits to what you can do in society and be treated respectfully. When you are enourmously fat, you smell bad, or you insist on puncturing your body with little hooks, you're going to get treated differently and that's just the way it is - the majority of people dont want to be subjected to that type of nonsense.
No is doesnt run Windows CE - and thank god! Ive used both WinCE and now Qtopia, and the Qtopia environment is MUCH more akin to a desktop environment. For example, in WindowsCE, you have to get a task manager add-on in order to switch between running apps. In Qtopia, you have a panel at the bottom of the display - just like in Gnome, KDE, or Winblows.
Ive had my Zaurus 6000 for a month, and its honestly the coolest 'gadget' Ive ever had.
WHO FIRGGIN CARES if the applications are name LPhoto and LTunes?! What is the big deal? This is a common practice used all over the software development field: Look at the names of applications used for Gnome and KDE: G-this.. K-that..
As far as the interfaces resembling Apple stuff? Whats the big deal with that? They say that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.. Well heres a good example! It also makes it easier to accomodate new users, especially in the market they are aiming for! It makes it easier to switch over if the applications are similar to those you've seen other platforms.
Noone freaked out on Microsloth when they came out with the Win95 interface - although it did borrow concepts from the Mac, Amiga, and XWindows.
I thought the whole Lindows suit was totally retarded too.. Christ - if someone wanted to start a new car company tomorrow, is it expected that the cars cant look anything like existing models?! Of course not! Heck the big car manufacturers are constanty copying each other in design styles.
So why should there be anything wrong with mimic'ing the GUI for software applications?
I dont know why anyone would want to put themselves through the hell of sendmail when Postfix is available. I have Postfix working with LDAP lookups, SMTP authentication, passwords out of LDAP - all kinds of cool stuff that was a total pain in the ass to get sendmail to do. If you havent checked it out yet, do so and I am sure you will agree: Postfix rules!
Actually - you are an idiot for even stating something like this. Let me guess - YOU smoke eh?
Smoking changes your mindset to that similar to a crack addict: always anticipating your next fix. It takes away your sense of smell almost completely. It makes you smell horrible to those that still have a sense of smell around you, and are subject to the horrible rotten stench of your breath. It destroys your appreciation for cleanliness bit by bit until you dont care anymore. It controls your mood - if you dont get your little fix on time, you turn into a raging jerk. Its puts immense completely unnecessary burden on health care systems. it makes you weak - analgous to running a car with a plugged up air intake system. It makes you teeth brown, burns your throat, and taints your finger.
And.. like I even need to mention it, it kills MILLIONS of people each year before their time - much more than Saddam Hussein ever did..
Smokers stand outside the doorways to all public buildings and force non smokers to walk through their cloud of filth - something that gives me a instant headache. They ruin nightclubs and restaurants. They force their addiction on their children because they are too ignorant and too selfish to not smoke in front of them.
Smokers flick their little cigarette butts all over the world - out their car windows. They're miserable, and they dont even realize it, so strong is the addiction, and to make themselves feel better they subconciously turn the world into their personal ashtray, ignorant to the fact that there are people who dont want to live in such a nasty place.
People who smoke are absolute trash!
I know - I smoked on/off myself for 10 years and I am completely embaressed of my behaviour and the damage I did to myself and the world around me.
I cannot even begin to explain how much better my life is since I stopped smoking: I am calmer. I dont have to take little breaks every few minutes and can work on a task for extended periods of time.
I can SMELL - oh my God if all smokers could just understand what they have lost in regards to their sense of smell because of cigarettes.
If you smoke - stop - NOW. It might be hard - it is one of the hardest things I ever did. Shut up... Stop Whining and realize you have a SERIOUS drug addiction and just friggin do it.
Cigarettes are a true bane of society. Governments are just starting to realize the damage that is done to their citizens and the quality of their lives.
People who smoke cigarettes are just plain sick - and its time we all worked together to fight this horrible disease.
I have been into electronic gaming of all sorts for years, and still very much am. I love online gaming including those where the object is to 'kill' your openent - Enemy Territory is my latest favorite! Yet I can step back for a 'sec and think about it: what IF there actually are those people out there who - for whatever reason - cant diferentiate between what is and isnt real when it comes to gaming? Shouldnt developers stay within some sort of limits of good taste - as should ever other aspect of culture? Theres right and wrong but theres also class and taste - and GTA doesnt have either. Its one thing to blast away very obviously fictional characters in a very obviously fictional envrionment in such games like Wolfenstein or Neverwinter Nights or BattleField 1942 or whatever. These games that dont in any way relate to, or correspond to, real every day life here in 2003. But GTA is anothe thing - is it worth it people? Do we HAVE to have games where its possible to go up and kill an innocent bystander on the side of a typical city street? I dont see how that can even be considered 'entertainment'. This game is as distasteful as so many other areas of today's multimedia culture - with of an emphasis on exploiting shock value. There ARE people who are disturbed enough that playing a game like this day in and day out might set them off. And there are those that it might just make them a little more negative towards society - which makes society more negative. When you purchase a product, you condone what it stands for - a tiny little bit - but it all adds up. Our society is only as pleasant and civil as the personalities that inhabit it. Why purchase a game then, which portrays, and even reward, actions of violence against innocent civilians then? Buy a real game - GTA is trash..

In order to get it to run on the latest gentoo distro, I actually have to start it with: ./run-mozilla.sh ./MozillaFirebird-bin

from within the install directory - this wasnt the case with Phoenix..
'Trying to execute the MozillaFirebird executable, resulted in:

good point..

it works fine here on gentoo..
??
Well - one thing for sure I think after reading the article..
'Wexelblat shouldnt have anything to do with XFree86 or X anymore..
He very obviously doesnt believe in it anymore - if he ever really did.
This isnt the kind of attitude you want having ANY control over XFree86 or X.

are you kidding me?!?
what a dick!
Perhaps Keith Packard wasnt trying to 'subvert' anything..
Perhaps he was trying to start a revolution - that looks like it might be needed.

:)
Its working great here! (my system stats: p4 2.0G 512Mb gentoo linux kernel 2.4.20-gentoo-r1, GeForce 4600TI, SB Live)
I tested campaign, multi-player coop, ramped up the video options.. The only thing I DIDNT test was custom content..
Its all working great! NWN in Linux!!
Woo Hoo!!
There is but a single bug I have found and that is with the mouse control.
Im going to send in a bug report - its probally not a big deal to fix..
Fantastic job BioWare!! You have seriously pushed forward into new territory in the world of Linux gaming!!
