You can even download linux drivers fro ATI websites... my logitech keyboard, mouse and yes my Logitech webcam work fine under linux as well. So welcome to the real world. That said I do believe that a lot more hardware is supported under linux than under Mac OS. But when u come to think of it, the only reason even windows supports more hardware than linux is because the manufacturers write drivers for windows but they dont do so for linux and there is a certain amount of truth in the fact that if only there was a single linux distro, it would be much easier for manufacturers to write drivers for linux, primarily because many manufacturers don't want to release their device specs or give any info to the world about internals of thier device which they have to do if they release the source code of their driver because surely they cant provide the driver for every linux distro out there.

But anyway, the other day I was discussing the use of FPGA in an embedded system and we reached the conclusion that an FPGA consumes too mcuh power to implement a whole CPU out of it. That said, an FPGA is surely an interesing concept for specialized computation as the article mentions. But this is very much limited by how frequently can u reprogramme the FPGA and if I am not wrong, this is not a very fast process, not comprabale to the number of instructions executed by a modern day CPU. So effectively, massively paralled applications are fine but if U have to reprogramme your FPAS too often then you wont get the proposed performance boost.

Well, Indian software industry is mostly active in services business and not in the products. As far as a shunning lack of commericial software, you would be surprised how many commercial softwares contain software from Indian companies, and for that matter how many embedded devices that you use have software from Indian companies. Infact during the peak days of dotcom boom, its chairman, Azim Premji was the second richest person in the world just behind Bill G. Wipro does have many good engineers like most big Indian software companies. But if you look at the salary of the guy, around 21000 USD, its not that low. Thats how the global economy works I assume. Eventually skilled people from poor countries get richer and to retain them the corporations have to pay more, and so the cost edge reduces gradually. Thats gonna happen with India as well, sooner or later. The only thing which is stopping this from happening is that India has a population of 1 billion, so we obviously have more skilled people as well, but still we have seen a gradual increase in the pay in IT industry and I dont think this trend is gonna stop. So eventually the competition between India and the rest will not be on price but on quality. Even my present company outsources work to India but again we feel that the quality of the work is not very good. But we can't go to a big company as it disturbs our budget calculations. But even then, now the consensus is emrging that we should give some work to a big Indian company. In future this cud be any company in the world.

Thirdly, in Europe, anti MS feelings are strong, so I dont think MS can make much of an impact in this market. Fourthly, all the major phone manufacturers have signed up for symbian. And its pretty easy to write applications on that too. Lastly, MS cant arm twist Nokia into carrying their software, mainly because a viable alternative exists. But knowing how MS operates, they may try to pull off something aka Xbox. Don't know how Nokia will counter that.

    >I assume you meant to write 'do we want songs withOUT DRM?
    Yes, my mistake.

    >If so, then the answer is that so we can do whatever we want with them, up to and including redistributing. I can do that with CDs today, give it to a friend. I can also make a mix CD, sell it to a used CD store, and much more.

Well, thats the whole point. You can redistribute the CD but is it fair if ur friend makes a copy of that CD. So effectively he has the same CD but nothing went to the record company. By extension(exagerrated), record company will sell only one CD and everyone else has a copy, which surely doesn't make business sense.
And you can also make a CD with the songs which the record companies are providing for downaloads. So you can make any CD you like. As far as selling it in a second hand store, well, if you sell the HD with the song on it, you theoretically can charge the person to whom u sell the HD to. Its just that the medium now is different.
But thats not the point. The point is what we want a different solution. And my question was what exactly do we want? Whats so empty and rheotrical about this? I mean if u want to achieve something, you surely need to know what is it that you plan to achieve, or do u just want ppl to come up with new soutions and then say, hey I like that, and hey I dont like that, while u r sitting idle without contributing anything to it?

    >Is it fair for whom? What does this have to do with fair?
Are u really that dumb or are u just pretending??
By fair I mean fair to the music company and the artist. You surely cant survive if make an album with 12 songs in an year and then one chap downloads that album for $10 and redistributes it all over the world, can u?

    >Songs are not software. That's how they're different. Do you even have to ask?
Nice answer smart ass, what I meant was in terms of content licensing.

So my question still remains.... What exactly is the ideal solution that we are looking for?

These songs are in wma and liguid audio formats so that they can build DRM protection into it.
But the big question is do we want songs with DRM? If yes, why do we want them so? So that we can redistribute them? Would it be fair to redistribute songs which we downloaded for 99 cents to millions of people using Kazaa? Why are songs any different from licensed software?
What exactly is the ideal solution that we are looking for?

Firstly dude the average Indian developer of equivalent experience to the one making > $75000 would be earning about $20000 or more in India. And lets say that the company where this guy is employed will charge the US company about double his salary, so about $40000(thats the norm). Its less but not that much less.

Secondly, did you know that there are more CMM level 5 spftware companies in India than anywhere in the world? And normally such companies produce extremely high quality code. Atleast that has been my personal experience. Ofcourse there are many small no-name companies too, which I dont know anything about.

And I will say thats capitalism. I think the west preached capitalism to the developing countries mainly to get their markets open. Listen to what IMF is always telling Argentina and other such countries. So effectively capitalism is fine as long as the Western companies get access to developing world market, as long as they can charge the developing world high proces for their patented drugs and things like that, but when the developing world tries to do the only thing it can do, i.e, provide cheap and qualified manpower, the west starts having problems??

There is a place in Delhi where you can buy any pirated MS software. Everyone knows about that. But there are hardly any raids there. I think MS is knowingly encouraging pirated software in India, so that they can get more developers.
Another thing is that software industry in India is mostly a services business, as in they sell services to other companies. They dont make any software products. Now its easy to guess what work do they get more, linux related or Windows related.

Its no different from what we do just before the exam. We know that if we dont study now we will flunk. In the same way those people know that if their children dont earn, the whole family will starve. And when one's survival is at stake, ethics dont really matte anymore. And once u do something repeatedly, you stop feeling bad about it.

As far as spending money on PDAs is concerned, the whole aim of the project was to improve the circumstances which force these people to send their children to work, i.e poverty. Its the same logic, you give a man food and he will be hungry the next day, teach him how to grow food and you have given him food for life. And the next logical question will be how will it tackle poverty. Well, majority of Indians depend on agriculture for a living. And this PDA can help them to find out about new techniques, weather patterns (it rains only four months in a year in India hence correct information about the timing of rains is very important) et. Besides it can reach people where the educational infrastructure is not very good and hence help improve the overall quality of life.
