Okay, I have to say that I'm quite impressed what Lindows.com has done (if it's true), but i wonder if the Linux Community wants/needs this? Or is here anybody using MS-Office frequently? Maybe those great programmers should have concentrated on writing good import filters for MS-Office documents for KOffice/OpenOffice/Abiword and a good and stable GUI for easy configuration (I know Yast2 and Mandrake are doing this quite well, but the Linux-Newbie wants something Windows-A-Like and stable).

Nice idea, but that's not what I would call "case-modding". I mean I have plenty stickers on my workstation and my laptop (bands, labels, my win98 key, lots of tuxes), but I don't consider calling my boxes "case-modded".

But: The story was about newbies. I don't think Winnie Windowsuser wants to do a couple of security updates in text mode with an old RedHat 6.4... Newbies are really better of with the new Distributions.
My library (ComBi = ComputerBibliothek) does this. They have a couple of boxed Linux Distros (including instrcutions) there and even run some KDE Workstations for Surfing. The problem with the Distributions is that they're totally outdated: Especially newbies have no use for RedHat 6, SuSe 6.4 or Slackware 5... okay they're boxed and come with a handbook etc. IMO it would be better to have some up to date ISOs there and give them away with the official installing instructions.
As far as I know FastTrack is (in theory) completely decentralized, but with the last client version (1.33), they introduced keys, you need to download from a master server in order to search, download etc.. This makes the system as atackable as napster was. The Time of OpenFT is coming...

There is an very well written article at Planetquake, which influenced my opinion towards this topic that much that I better just link it instead of quoting it thru my post.

A Friend of mine just bought a complete set from Aqua-Computer for his Athlon 1.4 Ghz. It's now running 1.6 at 30C constantly.
The radiator doesn't make any silence, but the other fans in the tower still do. Okay you can also cool CPU, Notrhbridge and GraphicsCard with one radiator, using Cupley and Twinpley, but the Towerfans still is noisy.
You can build a realy quiet PC with it, but it's very expensive (my friend paid around 400$)
the bank, my father works for. Their complete networking infrastructure is based on OS/2. Nobody really likes it all, but they have to use it, beacuse the "Rechenzentrum" use it.
Anyone knows how the compatibilty between OS/2 and this eComStation is?
There is no English SelfHTML, except from a babelfish translation. It is included in the main distributions anyway, cause it is a really good (the best) guide.
In Germany there is a great shop who sells actual images, burned on CD for a fair prize. it's called LinISO. Very cool if you don't have xDSL and/or a toaster and don't want to buy the boxed edition.

I prefer buying hackable things by myself.

I think that's another major step towards making Mozilla the most used and powerfulst browser.
And Mozilla finally reaches its aim to be a browser farmework that can be used everywhere: Webpads, other bwrowsers and stuff like the compuserve/AOL Software. Hope the German ISP T-online does something in that way too 8they're using IE in their current Windows-all-in-one solution).

There was nearly the same discussion some month ago at askslashdot, but in fact in was more desktop/en-user focused.
I think there a lots of open-source applications for Win 32 systems (more than it might be good): Ogg Vorbis has utilities for Windows; CDex is a great open-source CD-Ripper/Encoder; and with VirtualDub Windows users have the powerfulst video-editing/capture software.
The list could go on nearly endless just think about all those open-source javaapps (Limewire, JCDSee...) which run under every platform...

I really like those new "Opera-Style" Features. And of course the new one is a bit more stable.
But the E-Mail Client is still something to work on (stability/speed), I like KMail a hundred times better... maybe in the next version...

Gnucleus is an open source Gnutella Client, and from all the ones i've tested so far (LimeWire, SwapNut, Bearshare, Gnutella [Classic], Gnut) it's the f***in best. Like every other client it takes some time to connect, but after Gnucleus is connected it's really fast. It's Windows only for now, but the developers say it should work great in wine, cause it uses the MFC of Windows. I haven't tried that yet.

Single Floppy? And where to you hide your rootfs?
Do you think that the kernel still needs improvements/hardware support for the End-User (Desktop/Workstation etc.)?
