  1. Learning Web Design/Development on Primers for Entering The World Of Web Development? · · Score: 1

    Step 1: Learn HTML
    Step 2: Learn CSS (!!!)
Step 3: Learn Graphics (GIMP, Photoshop, Paintshop etc.)

Now you have basic Webdesign knowlededge and you can choose between two ways:
    1. The developer way:
    Step 4: Learn Perl/PHP
Step 5: Learn SQL/databases in general
Step 6: Get better in everything...
    2. The desginer way:
    Step 4: Learn Flash
Step 5: Get better in graphics, video design etc.
    Step 6: Buy a Mac ;)

Of course, you can try doing both ways, but in fact you will become only "master" of one of them.

I don't know if someone said that already, but there's a very cool german linux-router project (xDSL/ISDN) focused around: fli4l
    From fli4l.de:
"Fli4l is a single floppy Linux-based ISDN, DSL and Ethernet-Router. You can build it from an old 486 based pc with 16 megabyte memory, which is more than adequate for this purpose. The necessary boot-disk can be built under Unix, Linux or Windows. You don't need any specific Linux-knowledge, but this would be useful. You should have some basic knowledge about networking, TCP/IP, DNS and routing though. For extensions and further development, that exceed the standard configuration, you need a working Linux-system and Unix/Linux knowledge."
Personally I use it as a DSL Router for my 2 PCs and it works great: F***in fast, secure and easy. If you want a ISDN/DSL Router check it out., otherwise LinuxRouter ist the better choice.

Of course RedHat, SuSe and Mandrake are great starter distros and if you want to, you can install them without thinking of partitioning, package selcetion and network configuration etc.
My Tip for all the newbies out there is, always to chose the Expert/Advanced/Custom Installation and work through it, so that you get a first look "insinde" Linux. You learn how to partition your Hard Disk, basic things about network configuration, the system start, X Configuration.
In fact that gives you a much better look inside Linux as the coomon/beginner/easy installations. I love the Expert Installation of Mandrake...

In this point you are right. But the difference is the way Oopen source and Close Source Software in developed. Let me give you one example: Projectmayo has a cool DivX Player named the Playa, it's cool because it even plays not completed DivX Moviez and has some other cool features. The only thing I didn't like about it was the installer. It was bloated up with the codec and i wanted just the binary. Okay, I could download the source and compile it myself, mayve easy for some users. But it wasn't for me at that time (now I'm a little more experienced), so i asked in the Forums, if it would be possible to release a binary only distribution and one day later the author of the program reacted and put the binary only online. I don't think the guys of Winamp would have done that, too. X

I think there is, because the advanced, not programmer, user can help the development team in giving serious bug reports and feedback as beta testers. And if it's an OS-Project the bug will be fixed in the next version or the feature will be probably added. For the normal newbie Windows User okay, he doesnÄt benefit from OS Software even if it's fuckin good. He'll us M$ Products forever. But such advanced users as described can really help the Development team. Just my point of view. X

  18. TINRA on On Editing Or Converting Real Media · · Score: 2

At least, if you are under Windows there is a good solution to work on Real Files. You can convert the *.rm files to (uncompressed) *.avi with TINRA (This Is Not Real Anymore) and then work on it with Virtualdub (cut it, export sound etc.). Even TINRA can only give a *.avi as output is supports Real Audio as well; you just have a sound-only avi after conversion. X
