It isn't that they are ALLOWED. The problem is that these things are REQUIRED. If you run a "cyber-cafe" in this town, you are required by law to have certain security measures in place. Security measures that are a such a major invasion of privacy that they destroy the anonymity that is so essential to free speech.
Do you feel clever being the 50th person to point that out? Have you never read a bit of text and completely missed a word? Are you some kind of godlike being with your amazing grasp on the obvious? Is your life so sad and pathetic that you have nothing better to do than to point out the shortcomings of others? Piss off.
Yup, that's the standard def gear. I've been trying to get the bastards to come off of some HD for a while, but all the deals are only for new customers.
DishNetwork's HD-DVR is already out, but it will set you back a cool thousand.
No it won't. When I signed up with Dish Network, they installed the dish, 2 normal receivers, and a DishPVR for 99 bucks. As far as how it compares to Tivo? I tried a Tivo, and the delay when switching channels really pissed me off. The DishPVR has no such delay. All in all, I've had no problems out of it, technical or otherwise. And to answer one of the other questions, that BS about the satellite being unreliable is absolute bullshit. My cable modem stops working before my sat goes out.
Actually, I do have one that is pretty bad. My home theatre pc has an enermax power supply and I can hear it plain as day. That fan and the hard drives are the loudest things in my equipment rack. After lining the case with Dynamat, it the hard disk noise is gone, but I can still hear the PS. As for it being irritating, it can be, especially when watching a movie or listening to music. Of course, there is the posiblity that the bearing is wearing out, or maybe I just got a loud one.
There was a theory (from Cringely, I believe) that Microsoft is doing all this intentionally. They really missed the boat on the whole "Internet" thing in the begining, and this was their plan of attack:
Plague windows with remote insecurities
Blame this on the designs of the open standards that currently power the net
Release MSTCP/IP, with built in encryption, authentication and DRM as a "solution" to the problem at hand (virus, spam, etc)
Profit!
Yeah, I didn't really buy it either (and I LIKE conspiracy theories)
Did you hear the REAL reason that goatse.cx was taken down?
Darl McBride fell down in a Walmart, spilling his scalding hot coffee on his (very shrivelled) member. He got so hopping mad he called David Boies and said "SUE EVERYBODY". In the resulting shitstorm, a Cease and Decist was accidentally sent to goatse.cx.
Yeah, I read about one of those cases. Monsanto sucks the BIG one.
They are a perfect example of a Big Bully Corporation. There was a recent case against a small dairy. The dairy (a co-op arrangement, nice folks) labeled their milk as having come from non-rgbh treated cows. They did not say that rgbh (recombinant bovine growth hormone) was bad, they simply stated that they did not use it. Monsanto sued them to force a label change. Thankfully Ralph Nader and his lawyers came to their aid, they didn't have the resources to fight it on their own. I think it is still an ongoing case.
If you had read the article, you would know that the plants have been engineered to be sterile. Much like the GM corn crops that Monsanto (evil bastards) sells.
Of course, that doesn't mean that something couldn't go wrong, and we end up with a breeding specimen.
Citroen. No, wait, they won the WRC manufacturers championship, can't bash them (even though they are ugly as hell).
Ok, here's one Peugeot. Can't find anything good to say about this one. I rented one on my last trip to Europe. Blech. Felt like driving a Civic with a cold.
Or, the mother of all European mistakes - The TRABANT! (East German, it counts;-)
Of course, you can laugh at American engineers all you want, but at least our probes LANDED on mars!
The Trabant is acutally a Soviet design built in East Germany. It had the loudest, stinkiest 2 stroke engine ever made, think lawnmower with a shot of nitrous. The body panels were made of a resin reinforced with cotton fibers. All in all it was probably the worst car ever produced.
How many neighbors do you have with the same problem? With a T1 line as cheap as it is these days, you may just want to get with your neighbors and see if they have any interest in pitching in 50 bucks a month or so for a wireless link. If you get 7 or 8 folks together, buy some cheap wireless gear and a few cantennas, you can probably get yourself a "real" connection without all the BS you tend to get from satellite or from regular broadband ISPs (think invisible caps, no server policies, etc). Get a little techno-hippy wi-fi co-op running!
Heh, The first link you provided (to cheyenne mountain) has a self-signed SSL cert. Of couse this prompted my browser to ask if I trusted cheyennemountain.af.mil, to which I promptly said "no".
Isn't it great that a FUCKING US ATTORNEY can't even get the infringement/theft thing straight? She should be disbarred for incompetence.
There's also this choice bit:
Among the movies being illegally sold off the Internet: "Master and Commander," "Last Samurai," "Matrix Revolutions," "Mystic River," "Gods and Generals," "Mighty Wind," "Matchstick Men," "Something's Gotta Give," "Love Actually," "Thirteen" and "Calendar Girls."
There is no evidencd he "sold" anything to anybody. Fuck CNN, they have no respectability anymore.
No, in the letter and practice of the law, you are still wrong. The HL2 source code case is related to computer breaking and entering, which is a different crime from simply posessing somebody else's copyrighted material. One of the conditions that has to be met for it to be theft is the deprivation of the lawful owner of his/her property. This isn't possible with intellectual property. You can copy it, but you can't deprive the owner of it. Hence it is called infringement, not theft.

Every time there is a copyright related case, I have to take the time out of my day to explain to asshats like you that copyright infringement isn't theft. It is copyright infringement. They are different.
I have that exact problem. It only happens when I am moving my mouse or using the scroll wheel. Haven't been able to fix it yet, but I'll keep you posted.
Have you tried the DVD-Audio playback yet? Mine worked fine for a couple months, but recently it has started to play back VERY choppy and garbled.
You actually can get 192khz/24bit on a sound card right now.
[Raving fan mode on] The sound blaster audigy 2 is capable of decoding all DVD-audio formats, including the rarely seen but still awesome sounding 192Khz/24bit stereo format. It can also play back the 48Khz/24bit and 96Khz/24bit 5.1 modes. Add to that a 106DB signal to noise ratio and THX certification, and it sounds pretty sweet. I use one in my home-theatre PC to play back DVD-A.

Whoops, those two little letters do make a difference, don't they ;-)

From the article text:
Doom worm currently reeking havoc across the globe.
So it's a smelly worm? Or are they trying to say that Windows stinks?

Whoops, it's in there, I just didn't go deep enough into the slide show.
What about the Trabant? With a plastic body, approx 30Hp in a noisy, dirty 2 stroke engine, what's not to love?

You are an idiot. They didn't say distribution, they said "sell". And they were wrong.

Unfortunately, the recording is downsampled to 44.1x16. So not as good for recording. Great card for playback though.

Why do the sentencing guidelines matter? The law is so poorly written as to be unenforceable.
