You forgot about BOB. From the press release:

Microsoft BOB, after many years on top as the premier productivity assistant, is set to be retired. A Microsoft spokesman said: "We deeply regret the decision to end the life of such a successful product. However, a new breed of assistants, led by our popular 'Clippy' mascot will continue our fine tradition of assistive software." In response, user groups the world over have petitioned Microsoft to open-source BOB.

The sidekick comes with an application called "Catalog". It has ringtones, apps, and some other stuff to download. It just came out, so the selection is a little sparse, but the program you are looking for is called "Terminal Monkey". It does telnet and SSH. All in all, the response times aren't bad. 19 bucks is a hella good deal!

Try the sidekick from T-mobile. It doesn't do bluetooth, but there is a killer ssh client available, and the mail works great. The qwerty keyboard makes shell sessions tolerable. With new or renewed t-mobile service, I think it costs about 249. Web browser and txt messaging is just a bonus. All the data you can eat for 20 bucks a month (voice is a separate plan). Oh, and it is a GSM phone.

I love the damn thing. It's a bit awkward at first, and it is a closed platform. But if you register as a danger open-source developer and prove you don't suck, they'll give you the keys. Reception is as good as my old nokia, battery lasts about 2 days or so (I use it alot). Screen is top-notch. Good browser, better email. Can read PDF's, etc. Oh, and the SSH/Telnet client just came out. However, of all the things I like about it, the best thing is the form factor. It just feels right. All in all, I would definitely recommend.

For some reason, alot of the people here hate it. They've called me a shill for posting the virtues of what I consider to be a great product (and no, I don't work for danger or t-mobile ;-).

Anyhow, that's my 2 cents. If you get one, let me know how you like it.

Yeah, I understand the point of the contract. I was merely pointing out that it was an obstacle for carrier swapping. And understanding it doesn't make it suck any less ;-)

As for your old phone, instead of eBay, why not dontate it here. They have a number of affilliate charities that make use of the phones. Some of them go to battered women as a lifeline, etc.

  10. Contracts suck. on What Has Number Portability Done For You? · · Score: 1

Sure you can take your number, but what good does that do you when you are stuck in a 2 year contract? Most carriers require at least a 1 year commitment for a free/discounted handset. I think this will become more popular as people's contracts expire and such.

I guess the only nice thing about the contract is that it does give you some leverage. I have called my carrier (T-mobile) for dropped calls, and they always credit my account per the contract (Read carefully). Additionally, the contract ending gives you a bargaining chip with your carrier, especially w/number portability. When I wanted a new phone, I went to T-mobile, noticed that my contract expired, and told them I was going to cancel. They then transferred me to one of their "retention specialists", or somesuch, and gave me a killer deal on a new Sidekick to stick with them for another year.

The "forkers" are all of the original linuxgazette.com staff. They started the zine on their own dime, and after 2 years of running independent, SSC offered hosting. The gazette accepted this generous offer. Over the years, their business became intertwined. Now SSC claims to own the gazette. They are altering articles without the authors permission, and stripping the authors attribution and copyright notice and adding their own in its place. They are basically claiming copyright over everybody else's work. Sounds like another three letter company we all know and love, doesn't it?

Yeah, the javascript support situation blows ass. So does CSS support *cough*IE!!*cough*. And it is true that you will have to set limits on what browsers people can use, but I still think it is easier to deal with the support with a web app. For one thing, all the logs are right in front of me. It's really easy to grep the access logs for the users login name and get any errors associated with them. For another thing, webapps only have to worry about a handful of browsers that matter (IE, Safari, Moz, Konq, Opera), and not the hellishly different evironments you can find on systems in the field.

Both types of apps have their place, we'll just have to agree to disagree ;-)

  20. Re:Yeah Frameworks are Great on Java Frameworks and Components · · Score: 2, Insightful

Kay, couple of nits to pick here. First off, I think you meant HTTP protocol, not HTML. HTTP is perfect for what it was designed for. That is shuttling documents back and forth to between clients and a server. It is very simple to understand and implement.

Second, what's wrong with Javascript? It is very useful in a web app. Field validation, UI enhancement, etc.

Third, I think you are ignoring all of the benefits of deploying a web app VS a standalone application. Such as support (much simpler IMHO). It also helps to negate the massive variations in computer hardware/OS that is out there. If I deploy as a web app, and I am careful about coding standards, that app works the same for a Mac, Windows, or Linux system. Lastly, there is nothing to install. Many users freak out whenever they have to install anything at all on their system.

You have some valid points about the difficulty of deploying such an app, and the workarounds that are necessary, but in the end, I think it is worth it.
