education in the U.S. should be USA first and not being more open to higher paying international students.
At the university where I work, there is a push from various groups (including faculty) to admit MORE international graduate students simply because they bring in more money. The reasoning is - while we are supposed to be prioritizing in-state applicants, over the past few decades the state has drastically cut the overall percentage of the university's budget which it funds... so why should we continue to follow rules which were set when the state paid the majority of the university's operating budget?
Note: I'm not arguing this is good or bad... just that it is a thing.
From what I've read of Elon Musk, that isn't how he operates. If the damn thing was to have just blew up on the pad, not only would the feed keep rolling, Elon Musk would out talking about how bitch'n the unscheduled rapid disassembly was.
Yup, me too. I purchased a refurbished 6S last summer... the battery is fine, but I'm planning to replace it in November/December because it's only $29. Same thing for a 6 Plus I've got laying around (although in that case, it's likely the battery is significantly degraded at this point in time).
It doesn't sound like everyone is convinced these planets - if they are planets - are extragalactic. So while it's definitely cool science, perhaps we should monitor this story for further developments and feedback from other researchers.
Using MLK to sell trucks with the tagline "Built to Serve".
The "service" the truck provides is roughly as relevant to MLK's words as if they'd instead made a commercial featuring clips of Rafael Nadal for 30 seconds followed by the tagline "Built to Serve".
Agreed! I was sweating the possibility that the New England Deflators might pull out another win at the end... but Old Man Brady wasn't quite up to it.
The commercials have been underwhelming for quite a few years now... also, what's with all the commercials this year which had nothing to do with the product? I mean, the para-olympic athlete had a great story, sure - but what's the tie-in with the car company? And using MLK's "call to service" speech to sell trucks - what the heck is that about?
If only there was a way, or some kind of technology already existing, that someone could pay a few hundred dollars to go up thousands of feet in the air.
Yeah, it’s pretty funny that he claimed he was going to prove something by rocketing up to an elevation much lower than commercial jetliners routinely travel.
I agree this would be a good thing... but I’m not sure Kickstarter is the way to go for something where you’d ideally want broad corporate backing, given Kickstarters have a habit of just disappearing with your money.
Of course I’m assuming people want this professionally. If it’s really the case that people want it for their home hobby servers, then Kickstarter is fine.
Lots of people don't have driving licenses but they still get packages, buy alcohol , open a bank-account, take a flight or other stuff needing identification.
In Washington state (and I imagine most other states as well), non-drivers can still go to the department of licensing and get a state ID for such purposes. Requirements are the same as getting a drivers license, excepting the driving competency parts. My daughter had one for several years, since she actually wasn’t keen on driving. We finally started encouraging her to learn to drive in her 20s.
Is there any sort of legal guidance in California stating that just because your phone is unlocked (to display the app) doesn’t mean the police can just take the phone and start searching through it?
This - or some variant of this - is how Dreamhost has handled WHOIS for years. Currently if you look up my hobby site, the admin contact is {domain name}@proxy.dreamhost.com .
Uber may be trying to game the conversation for numerous reasons... including trying to head off sabotage.
I remember the last US-wide truckers' strike. Trucks were vandalized; trucks were hijacked; scab drivers were injured and (IIRC) at least a couple were killed. Once some large company buys into the long-haul driverless truck concept, the drivers will almost certainly mobilize - and they're not the sort who will limit themselves to protesting peacefully.
I suppose one good thing is it'll finally bring the knowledge that AI is going to completely disrupt the working world into the forefront of the public's collective mind.
Certain congressmen are beginning to realize that Trump himself may be indicted in the upcoming months, so they need to move NOW to stop that if at all possible.
Our daughter begged us to buy a Wii U... so we did. A year before they basically abandoned it... She actually still plays a few games on it, although I think it's used more for Wii games than anything U-specific. But it's never seen anything like the use the old Wii did.
We are not buying the Switch, in any case. I think we've somewhat shifted out of that demographic - plus the Wii U abandonment left a bad taste in my mouth. I feel like Nintendo should have done something for the Wii U purchasers other than basically say "yup, you shouldn't have bought that".

The definitive test for robot-hood was created over a decade ago.
Which of the following would you most prefer:
A. A puppy*
B. A pretty flower from your sweetie
C. A large, properly formatted data file
CHOOSE!
* It is the bad kind of puppy - not mechanical in any way

FTFY

I'm waiting for the Star Trek follow-up movie about the return of T'la to the planet Earth in 300 years.

Toyota also manufactures medical equipment, including prosthetics.
Yes, I assumed that - but the commercial did not seem to indicate that in the slightest.
... to screw this tech up somehow.

People are always confusing me with #5432154321... I’m getting really tired of it.
Interesting... I didn’t know that about Caldera.
Also that mention of (the real) SCO from back in the day made me rather sad.
Are they arguing over who should get marketing props?
I’m glad FOSS exists, regardless of the origin of the terminology.

It’s so crazy that it must be true! Someone call Devin Nunez!

if you only need a browser and Office you get a nice-looking laptop to run them at lower price point, but this really is a one-trick pony.
People shouldn't have to pay $800 just to run "a browser and Office".
Where do these rodents carry their cell phones? Heck, how are they paying for them?
Are they on unlimited plans, or do they usually go prepaid?
