Anyone know what vesion control or configuration management software they're using? It has to be something pretty powerful to handle a single repository of the size of Google's.
Korby Parnell (works for Microsoft writing Visual SourceSafe tech docs) replied to this very question in his blog comments. Here is his response: "As far as I know, Microsoft does not have an 'official' SCM product. I can't speak for all teams, of course, but my team uses Visual SourceSafe for source control."
I also rarely check my speed unless I'm all alone on a fast country road. And generally, I try to ride just a bit faster (2-3 mph) than traffic to avoid staying in anyone's blind spot or having them forget me.

Chordonblue,
Can you email me, please? I live very close to where you work and would love to chat sometime. I would have emailed you but you didn't supply one.
Thanks...

After programming at work and at home for 6 years, I decided to pursue a dream from my teen-age years. I had always wanted to buy and ride a cycle but my dear mom said "Not while your feet are under my table." So I didn't.
But 15 years later I convinced my wife that some things are worth a little risk.:)
So I bought an old clunker; a 1980 Honda CB750. I rode it for 2 years, outgrew it (the thing would vibrate like mad at any speed over 55 mph) and bought a 2001 Suzuki SV650S. There just nothing quite like a cycle. The wind in your face and a powerful machine between your legs. The vibration, the wind, the sun; it's all incredibly relaxing after a long day of being cramped behind a keyboard.
As others have said, you don't have the OS4 fast lookup. But if you do want something similar, I just found a software alternative here named SingleHander. I've been using it for a few days and really love it!
For a long list of possible gnutella servers to get you started, look at http://slapme.adotnet.net/~michael/. There is even a short list of hosts that should work for those of us unfortunate to live behind a firewall.
I've been using DATEK for well over 2 years now and am greatly pleased with their services. Even though I use the Foolish Four Strategy and only trade once a year, I couldn't be more pleased with the low prices ($9.99 per trade), high-availability web site, and reasonable service.
The only trouble I've had with them was when I forgot my password. I had to call 3 times and they finally ended up FedEx'ing me the new password at their expense.
Absolutely it can do Java bytecode. Dave (the president) said that they had a demo machine running both Java bytecode and X86 at the same time. I would think the efficiency & optimizations would suffer, though.
It would seem to me that the usefulness of this site is in the resources offered rather than the code itself
Not true. Monday morning, I'm going to suggest to my manager that we use SourceForge internally, since we're about to switch to CVS anyway. And, we certainly could use all the SourceForge extras, like bug tracking, forums, web interface, etc. Remember, we can't use the public SourceForge site because our product uses a closed license.
You're right in that, if VA does a good job, there probably is not a need for a public clone of SourceForge. But corporate developers will love this for internal use. Unfortunately, it will be difficult to measure how widely it's being used since the public will never see these sites.
I'm confused. You want only the moderators to see the submission queue?
That actually sounds reasonable to me. It might be helpful to CmdrTaco and Hemos. However, there would be lots of room for abuse. (A moderator copying the list of stories and posting them somewhere to start a gripe session.)
Curious - Has id Software (developers of the original Wolfenstein) officially been connected with this? In other words, is this an officially sanctioned re-make (or sequel) or a cheap ripoff?
Nope, I didn't see anything nasty about that comment. You must be new to reading JohnC's writing. He meant exactly what he said; no more and no less. He's too straight-up to deliver a slap in a sarcastic tone like you've imagined. I've been reading his plan updates for around 3 years and have yet to read anything spiteful or nasty. Even when he had to publically acknowledge that Brian Hook's.plan updates were out-of-hand he did so in a quiet but firm tone.
Right. That would be me. I've been reading/. for about 2 years now. But never felt the need to create an account until yesterday. Ah well.
Why is cutting off at 2/3 wrong? Because it really only tells how long someone has been around here. Not how valuable a resource they are or how pertinent their opinions.
I'd highly suggest that moderation be given to ALL users whose total posting scores are in the top 50%.
Large corporations are usually faceless entities to consumers/individuals like myself. But Jamaie wasn't afraid to be a face with an opinion. (Amazing that Netscape's lawyers permitted it.) He provided an internal interpretation of events that we usually only see through the mainstream press.
Perhaps he'll be more free to assume another 1/10 of ESR's role. Would he be qualified and able? In one of the articles he mentions explaining OS to "rooms of Netscape employees," as I recall.
Guild Wars runs just fine windowed. You can even resize the window with your mouse to whatever resolution you desire. And it's a great game, to boot!

Good Luck... gnutella'ing is lotsa fun!
Moderate the parent of this comment DOWN. Both questions are answered in his FAQ.
1. No, of course not.
2. I don't compare languages.

Hey! One of the laptops on this page shows Slashdot. Hard to tell what day, tho.
They played Quake3: Arena on both Windows and Linux to demonstrate that the performance is very good and runs X86 apps flawlessly.
No, no, no. Not 20% less, but 20% of! A BIG difference, my friend.
In the Q&A after the presentation, one of the Transmeta execs speculated that the system battery life of a laptop's would double! I can hardly wait!

> I need a vehicular MP3 CD player
Yep, there's one out there; it even plays regular CD's, too. Look at Pine's D'music SM-200C MP3 / CD Player and drool!
A co-worker is planning to buy one shortly after they're released (January, 2k)

Anyone know where JWZ is off to next?
And who will be replacing him at Mozilla?
