And so what if George lucas makes some money off the movie? it is his right isn't it? It is not like the quality of the movie is going to suffer because of it. He didn't take all of these promoters suggestions on making the movie or anything they all came after the fact. So the phantom menace is 100% pure lucas. As it should be. But hey if someone wants to give me 2 billion dollars to promote a movie i made on my own am i going to say no?? HELL NO!! would you? Would you be saying something like, "oh no Pepsi, i can't take your two billion dollars then it would look like i was selling out." No sir!
I say sure keep the money rolling in!
I think the important thing to understand here is that Lucas didn't go out looking for all of this hype, it came to him. Pepsi came to him and asked for the rights to use his movie to sell their products, the magazines came to him asking to use his characters to sell their magazines. If he benefits from their use of his ideas then good for him! He deserves it. The second and most important thing to remember is that Lucas made this movie wholly on his own, in his own studios with his own employee's with his own money. It totally his vision and ideas that created it. all of the money that is now comming in is after the movie has been made. Had pepsi and all the rest had a hand in making the movie THEN lucas would have truely sold out because he compromised his vision for corporate money. As things are that has not happened and any money he is getting is well earned!

I've also seen my mom yelling at the top of her voice at my sister and my sister is basically paying no attention to her because she is so caught up in what she is doing and when you finally get action out of her by disciplining her it's just enough action to keep mom from disciplining her any more but even all through this yelling and whatever she still is focused on whatever she's fantasizing about. I do see how this could have it's advantages but it sure makes the person seem VERY selfish and uncaring. I think this is why this is considered a disorder. I should probably also point out that I can't ever remember getting spam pertinent to British residents (and yes, I do skim through them - if only to satisfy a primal urge to know that people really are that stupid). More often than not, the end of a spam mail tells me to call some US phone number to get my email address removed - so not only is the mail totally wasted on me, but it would probably cost me in excess of a tenner to get my address removed. Personally, I have to admit to having no idea how one might go about making spam illegal over here, or preventing UK addresses from ending up on US lists. I'd love it if someone could suggest something though.

Don't steal any IDEAS!? The word steal tries to bias the thing, but even so the comment is strange.

Not that I agree with the possibility of software patents anyway, but let's just assume we are talking about ideas that are not subject to patents (prior art, insufficient originality, etc.). Taking ideas from products in the same area is one of the major inspirations for making any product better. It is not about "stealing code", but just about doing what winds up working well.

Just a trivial example. I think that the idea of creating a real-time markup spell-check flags in a word-processor is a pretty good idea. It can be implemented better or worse, of course; but it is sometimes useful to see an unobtrusive mark (like a special color underline) by words that are possible misspellings. Sad to say, the first product that I know of that did this was MS-Word (There may well be a prior example that I am not familiar with). It is hardly WRONG for WordPerfect (which I actually use, and is better than MS-Word in many ways, including its implementation of this feature) to implement this same useful feature. Corel may well even have gotten the idea from MS's implementation of it.

Further, it would not be wrong for me to add this feature to an Open Source editor that I wanted to contribute to. If the idea is a good one, more power to whomever wants to implement it. That leads to software innovation, and generally improving products.

The SourceXchange and the Free Software Bazaar have the similarity that both involve the commissioning of works of software. There might be some call to ask if "Open Source" is the same thing as "Free Software," although that's not too crucial.

There are, however, enough differences as to consider them both potentially viable in their own "corners."

    • The Free Software Bazaar is nothing if not informal.

You can pick your license, and there's no one to ask permission of to participate.

This means that participation is cheap and easy for both "commissioners" and developers.

Unfortunately, the informality may not sit well with Pointy Haired Managers. Big, complex projects probably need not apply.

    • In contrast, what SourceXchange offers is a fairly formal system for arranging "commissioned works."

If an organization wants something fairly big, involving substantial effort and cost, this formality is quite necessary.

Unfortunately, the formality will tend to restrict participation to those with fairly "deep pockets."

I expect that someone that wants to sponsor someone to hack their favorite elisp script to work with both Xemacs and GNU Emacs will find the bureaucracy prohibitive

As a result, I would not regard these "commissioning bodies" as actually competing with one another.

Indeed, it is at least as possible that they could "feed" one another. Jobs "too big" for the informality of the FSB could be directed to "SX," and jobs "too small" for "SX" could be directed to the FSB.
